Text from Pages 1 - 88 of the 1959 volume:

When a person develops character enough to smile in the midst of constant physical affliction; to help others when she herself needs help; to cheer for her team in victory or defeat; to turn away from sympathy and praise; and to remain cheerful, keeping her sense of humor in the face of grave illness, she deserves a supreme reward. In fond remembrance of Lucy Rosano, who has earned this reward and in so doing has been an inspiration to us, we faithfully dedicate this yearbook. 2 With the production of satellites which circle the earth and moon rockets soaring thousands of miles into space, the world has been launched into the space age. We, as members of this age, are becoming increasingly aware of the role we must play in the future. We must constitute the scientists, the teachers, and the government leaders, as well as the supporting populace. As we leave behind these, our carefree high school years, and look ahead to the responsibilities facing us as future pioneers into the vast, unknown realm of space, we fervently hope we can meet this challenge with wisdom and fortitude. Education in a democracy serves a two-fold pur- pose. On the one hand it recognizes the needs of the individual and strives to develop those aptitudes which will enhance the personal happiness and economic independence of the individual. But equal- ly important is the task of preparing for competent and useful service to the community, state and na- tion. Actually, these two purposes are complementary, for the greatest happiness comes from being of service to others. My wish for you, in your senior year, is that you may discover this true happiness. EDWARD B. FILLBACK, Superintendent Graduation from high school indicates that a particular period in your life is about to close. For some it means the termination of all formal educa- tion and for others the completion of one more phase of their educational pattern. During the four years that you have been with us, the faculty has striven to help each one to grow mentally, morally, culturally, and physically in accord- ance with his interest and ability so that he will become a successful member in our democratic society. We hope that each one will consider graduation as the beginning of a very full life and that all will continue to grow by reading, attending cultural af- fairs, and participating in civic activities. I wish to congratulate every member of the grad- uation class and to extend my best wishes for the future. HAROLD E. HEALY, Principal Faculty MISS MILDRED MR. ALBERT MR. A. MERTON MRS. EDITH C. MRS. This group was organized under the direction of Mr. John Sweeney, as a result of the apparent new interest in a social group to con- tinue the work being done in the art classes. At the present time, only oil painting is being under- taken by the group,- however, in time the club hopes to experi- ment in various other fields of art that it feels will be beneficial to the members. The officers for the year are Julianna Thayer, president; John Silvernail, vice-president; Made- line Townsend, secretary; and Sue Nobert, treasurer. FIRST ROW, left to right: J. Silvernail, J. Trayer, S. Nobert. SECOND ROW: O. Cuthbert, B. Robida, B. Weber, L. Geffken. Audio Visual Aids Club The purpose of the Audio- Visual Aids Club is to provide service to the faculty in operat- ing tape recorders, film-strip pro- jectors, and the like, so that the teacher may have more oppor- tunity to take advantage fully of educational aids without being troubled with the actual show- ing. The club assists at every as- sembly by operating the P.A. system, and co-ordinates with WCNX on any programs being broadcast from the school. The group also helps during class cheering competitions by meas- uring the intensity of the cheers. The members of the club are under the supervision and in- struction of Mr. John R. Dunn. 40 FIRST ROW, left to right: W. Moniz, J. Geffken, P. Marchese, T. Keene. SECOND ROW: J. Alquist, P. Lundberg, V. Marchese. Electronics Club Although the Electronics Club has been in existence only this year, it has proved to be a high- ly popular activity. The member- ship of this organization is com- posed of those boys with an in- terest in the sciences, and the group's primary objective is ex- perimentation in electricity and electronics. The members gather weekly during activity periods for their meetings. Because the group consists of a limited num- ber of boys, no officers have been elected. Much credit goes to Mr. John DeNunzio, faculty adviser, for organizing such a club and pro- moting the work which is being carried out by its enthusiastic members. Left to right: J. Geffken, A. Levin, T. Keene, Mr. DeNunzio, P. Marchese. Fire Squad The Fire Squad consists of re- sponsible students chosen by Student Council early in the school year, whose principal function is to assist in fire drills. The members conduct this in an orderly manner by going to as- signed places from the basement to the third floor and directing all pupils toward the nearest exit. Also, the Squad checks all fire equipment and prepares it for emergency use. Under the capable leadership of Michael Daley, fire chief, and the competent guidance of Mr. C.V. Johnson, the members have very aptly kept up the good record established in former years. FIRST ROW, left to right: N. Citron, J. Cubeta, K. Dunn. SECOND ROW: P. Marchese, M. Daley, J. Geffken, V. Future Teachers of America For all French students at M.Ft.S. there is Le Cercle Fran- cais, a club which is organized so that a student can painlessly increase his vocabulary and com- prehension while having a good time. Discussions, skits, or games constitute the monthly meetings. A brief outline of the hour's pro- gram, along with the minutes of the last meeting are given in French at the beginning of each meeting, but the remaining bus- iness is held in English. The officers of the club for this year are Judy Paul, presi- dent; Karin MacDonald, vice- president; Julie Robinson, secre- tary. Advising the club is Miss Margaret Kinnirey. The meeting will now come to order. This statement was used to open the monthly meet- ings of the F.T.A. The members, consisting of sophomores, jun- iors, and seniors who look for- ward to careers in education, have offered their services to the school by providing recep- tionists for Parents' Night. An alumni project was also under- taken whereby the group plans to keep data on the graduates of M.H.S. Under the competent supervision of Mr. John Gale, faculty adviser, a formal installa- tion of officers was held, at which time pins were presented to the members and freshmen were inducted. Officers of the club are Angela Scirpo, president; Geraldine Dor- au, vice-president; Cathy DiTom- maso, secretary; and Ruth Lyons, treasurer. FIRST ROW, left to right: Mr. Gale, C. DiTommaso, A. This club has as its motto Ready of Head, of Heart, and of Hand, and each year tries to fulfill this aim. The members of the Executive Board for this year are Pat Lock- hart, president; Madeline DeBari, vice-president; Frances Kuzaro, secretary; Mary Kowaleski, direc- tor of socials; Mary Lee Giana- kos, director of service; Joan Poliner, pianist; Toni Carbo, news reporter; Barbara DiMauro, sen- ior representative; Karin Mac- Donald, junior representative; Elaine Roccapriore; and Evelyn Flynn, freshman representative. The advisers to this group are Miss Dorothy Wigmore and Miss Margaret Kinnirey. Junior Classical League The M.H.S. chapter of the Jun- ior Classical League, under the direction of Miss Eleanor Rior- dan, is composed of present or former members of the Latin classes. This year's activities opened with an orientation as- sembly explaining the functions of J.C.L. to the freshmen. In December an installation was held, at which new members re- ceived their pins and member- ship cards in a traditional cere- mony. The highlight of the year was the annual Roman Banquet held in the spring. The officers this year are: Leon Gibbs, president; Leo Giurintano, vice-president; Julie Robinson, secretary; and Richard Pandolfo, treasurer and parliamentarian. FIRST ROW, left to right: L. Under the enthusiastic leadership of Mr. David Werner, faculty adviser, the Math Club became an addi- tion to the numerous other clubs at M.H.S. All students with an active interest in mathematics are eligible for membership. The dues are paid on an annual basis with the exception of members wishing to make installment pay- ments. Also, a field trip was un- dertaken by the group. Officers of the club are Toni Carbo, president; Cathy DiTom- maso, vice-president; Louis Mil- ardo, secretary; and Larry Maz- zotta, treasurer. FIRST ROW, left to right: C. DiTommaso, L. Mazzotta, T. Carbo. SECOND ROW: Mr. Werner, V. Loffredo, E. Long, S. Brys, M. Davis, K. Hurwitz. THIRD ROW: A. Mendelowitz, K. Antin, C. Lyman, T. Keene, A. Levin. The Little Choir is an organi- zation of students in all grades who are especially interested in singing. Their instructor is Mr. Albert Basse, choir director at M.H.S. This group meets twice a week and rehearses different numbers for such occasions as school assemblies and concerts sponsored by the Music Depart- ment during the holiday sea- sons. Membership in this group is valued highly by singers at M.H.S. and the quality of their productions is always superb. Officers of Little Choir this year are Terry Dunn, president; Toni Carbo and Chris MacFar- lane, librarians; and Joan Poli- ner, secretary. FIRST ROW, left to right: N. Citron, L. Geffken, M. Modern Music Masters National Honor Society Clockwise from lower left: J. Edelberg, R. Pandolfo, T. Milardo, R. Matteo, T. Carbo, J. Poliner. The purpose of Modern Music Masters is to promote a deeper appreciation of the enjoyment of good music. In a sense, this club is a music honor society and is also affiliated with a national or- ganization. A good scholastic average in all subjects and out- standing musical ability are the two requirements for member- ship in this club. A project for the Middletown Savings Bank window, giving musicales at school, assisting at concerts, and presenting an as- sembly help make up this year's program of Modern Music Mas- ters. The officers for this year are Terry Milardo, president; Joan Poliner, vice-president; and June Edelberg, secretary. The members of the Honor Society have served as tutors and teacher substitutes under the guidance of their adviser, Mrs. Lois Horbal. In the spring the society members officiated at the first induction of the Cromwell High School chapter of the Honor Society. To be eligible for member- ship, a junior or senior must evince the qualities of high scholarship, leadership, character, and service, and have a cumula- tive average of 85 or better. Police Force The purpose of the Police Force is to enforce the rules and regulations of our school by keeping the students from loiter- ing in the halls, seeing that stu- dents get to their classes prompt- ly, and to maintain order during fire drills. This is done by station- ing members of the squad throughout the corridors during activity, recess, and lunch per- iods. The members are chosen by the Student council from all four grades. Student Council During the course of the year, the Student Council again under- took such projects as the sale of bookcovers and M.FI.S. pencils. A police force and fire squad were appointed; this is also one of its yearly duties. In the early part of the year, the Council pre- sented an assembly for the fresh- men on the subject of improving study habits. A better under- standing of school sports was given to M.H.S. students through a film shown during an assembly under the direction of the Coun- cil. This year the Student Council is led by Terry Milardo, presi- dent, and another senior repre- sentative, Laurene Mongillo, sec- retary. Advisers are Dr. Harold Healy and Mr. A. Merton Bozo- ian. Student members of the various staffs submit original ar- ticles to their respective staff ed- itors for editing and publication. The editors for 1958-59 are: Esther Newberg, editor-in-chief; Judy Paul, news editor; Linda Woods, feature editor; Margaret Shame, sports editor; Geraldine Dorau, alumni editor; Kathy Mur- phy, Over the Back Fence edi- tor; June Edelberg, business manager; and Jesse Salafia, pho- tographer. Lead- ing the Tigers for this year is Captain Larry Mikowski, with Mr. Arthur Tenney as coach. The Tigers won two games from Waterford, Farmington, Rock- ville, and Windsor and split with Glastonbury. On the other side of the coin were the M.H.S. loss- es. The quintet lost to Newing- ton, Plainville, and Southington. The city championship was lost to Wilson in two hard fought battles. Although beaten by the Wildcats, the Tigers qualified for the C.I.A.C. tournament, but were defeated by Newington. The jayvee team, coached by Prof. Gallito, also had a satisfac- tory record. FIRST ROW, left to right: J. Patrick, A. Brown, B. Hart, L Scianna, F. Senna, L. Giurintano, Mr. Tenney. SECOND ROW: D. Pomfret, L. D'Amato, L. Mikowski, V. Carta, J. Marino. Baton Corps Shoulders back, legs lifted high, and sparkling, smiling faces is a fine description of our well-known majorettes, led this year by Elaine Schettino, head majorette. The uniforms they wear are black with four white kickpleats. White boots with black tassels and a black hat with a white plume make their ap- pearance in public a feature at- traction. Their fine performances at games and parades are due to the capable direction and guid- ance of Mr. Forrest C. Harvey, their instructor, and Miss Marg- ery Woodington, their adviser. The officers of this year's corps are Mary Ellen Modehn, president; Nella Musumeci, vice- president; Dolores Gionfriddo, secretary; and Mary Lee Giana- kos, treasurer. FIRST ROW: N. Musumeci, B. Once again, Monday was chosen as the most convenient day for gathering at Gilletti's Bowl-A- Drome. The girls bowl in shifts, with freshmen and sophomores taking the first shift, juniors and seniors the second. The season is climaxed with the presentation of awards. Those serving as officers for the year are Esther Newberg, president; Jean Buttmi, vice- president; Dale Ehlinger, secre- tary; and Frances Kuzaro, treas- urer. Brookes, S. Ginsberg, S. Brunelle, J. Edelberg, K. Dunn, G. Tewksbury, N. Ahlgren, D. Brennan, D. Murray. Cheerleading Cheerleading is one of the best known activities connected with the school. Headed by their captain, Marie Milano, the mem- bers actively participate in foot- ball and basketball games by in- spiring and urging the teams to do their best for Middletown High. The cheerleaders also organ- ize pep assemblies which are held before every important game. During these assemblies the entire student body partici- pates by joining in on the cheers and encouraging the captains and members of the teams. Un- der the expert direction of Mrs. Edith Buckley, the cheerleaders do a wonderful job and deserve all the praise they receive. FIRST ROW, left to right: J. Turro, M. Milano, J. Faraci. SECOND ROW: K. MacDonald, A. Colonghi, L. Smith, F. Kuzaro, J. Cubeta, D. Ehlinger, S. Levine. Cross-Country The 1958-59 Cross-Country team, captained by Dave Bon- auito, had a five and five record, which includes a victory over Wilson. The team competed at the Teacher's College of Con- necticut in the C.I.A.C. and the Central Valley Conference meets. The University of Connecticut was also the scene of another of our interscholastic meets. In a triangle meet with Glaston- bury and Rockville, the Harriers tied for first place. Michael Eagle, a junior, set new records both at Choate Prep School and Manchester High with his best time being 13:27. Coach Bozo- ian had good reason to be proud of his team this year. FIRST ROW: T. Cahill, P. Woods, G. Tewksberry, C. Bengston, D. Boniuato, M. Eagle, L. Milardo, T. Ferenc, J. Harris, D. Moroni. SECOND ROW: F. Ceplenski, B. Franks, B. Pashekee, K. Antin, J. Coaching the team to a 6-3 record is Waino Fillback, head coach, John DeNunzio, Se- bastian Gallito, and Robert Par- melee. The Middletown Tigers opened the new season with a sparkling 14 to 6 win over Wind- ham High. The Tigers then clawed their way to wins over Maloney, Bristol, Platt and Farm- ington High Schools. However, the fighting Tigers were defeat- ed by strong Conard, Plainville, and Southington teams. Middle- town High captured the city championship, nevertheless, in a brilliant 10 to 0 win over Wilson to end the season. FIRST ROW: A. Branciforte, A. Matterazzo, L. Hart, K. Maetese, M. Twombly, D. Girls’ Athletic Association The Girls' Athletic Association is an organization for all girls at Middletown High who are in- terested in intramural sports. All girls enrolled at M.H.S. auto- matically become members. Each year there is an election of of- ficers, and in November there is an informal dance, whose theme this year was Midnight Carousel. Since its purpose is to develop girls' sports, there are many activities during the year in which the girls can par- ticipate, such as basketball, vol- leyball, and badminton games. It is really a worthwhile organi- zation for devotees of girls' sports. Officers this year are Mary Kowaleski, president; Betsy Don- dero, vice-president; Pauline Dominique, secretary; and Nella Musemeci, treasurer. Leaders’ Club The Leaders' Club, in affilia- tion with the G.A.A., is an or- ganization which encourages girls' participation in athletic competition. The members of Leaders' Club are honor students in the physical education classes. Since a girl is eligible for an of- fice in both that club and the G.A.A., these organizations have the same officers. Only those girls belonging to Leaders' Club are qualified to be room repres- entatives for the G.A.A. The officers are Mary Kowal- eski, president; Betsy Dondero, vice-president; Pauline Domini- que, secretary,- and Nella Muse- meci, treasurer. The adviser is the physical education teacher, Mrs. Edith Buckley. FIRST ROW, left to right: J. Hunt, R. Issacson, D. Czapiga, B. Kaczenski, J. Faraci, K. Mac- Donald, G. Augeri, J. Horton. Lundberg. 53 Boys9 Rifle The Rifle Team is composed of M.H.S. boys who are inter- ested in learning the right way to fire a rifle, both for enjoy- ment and actual competition. Coached by Mr. Paul Trudelle, it meets three times a week dur- ing the winter and averages ten matches a year. The team at- tained a new M.H.S. record of 918 points in a match against Bristol this season and has rea- son to look forward to higher scores. It also placed second in Connecticut in the National Rifle Association Sectional Tourna- ment held in New Haven. The team is led this year by captain Webb Moniz, and up to printing has a record of 7 wins and 2 losses. FIRST ROW, left to right: Mr. Trudelle, J. Bailey, R. Allen, W. Moniz, G. Nenninger, M. Giuliano, J. Kalinowski. SECOND ROW: S. Magnano, J. Geffken, J. Austin, A. Bergen, C. Lyman, A. Berg. Swimming The Middletown High swim- ming team in the 1958-59 sea- son had a most successful year. The team met every afternoon after school for practice at the Y.M.C.A. pool. Many under- classmen were outstanding on this year's team, as well as a few seniors. Winning five out of ten meets, in addition to com- peting in the New England Championship Meet, the Yale Carnival in New Haven, and the C.I.A.C. meet at the University of Connecticut, made it a most rewarding year for coach Robert Parmelee. Mike Daley and Tom Infer- rera, who are both outstanding members of the team, are this year's co-captains. 54 FIRST ROW: G. Miller, P. Spencer, F. Chalker, B. Folce. SECOND ROW: J. Hudson, F.
