CAULDRON PUBLISHED BY 1354 SENIOR CLASS MIDDLETOWN HIGH SCHOOL MIDDLETOWN, CONNECICUT DEDICATION MR. CARLETON L. WALKER We, the Class of 1954, dedicate this Cauldron” to Mr. Carleton L. Walker, in recognition of his faith- ful and conscientious service as adviser of our year- book. 2 FOREWORD Through the pages of this book are represented the unfor- gettable achievements and memories of our four years at Mid- dletown High School. Not only can we profit by the further knowledge that we have gained, but we can also recall the pleasant memories. We have learned the true value of educa- tion as well as that of sportsmanship, and to many of us has come the realization of our ambitions. Since we began our high school careers, we have developed both in body and in mind. With a greater understanding of ourselves and of others, we are better prepared to face the future, with the hope that it will be as happy and successful as our years at Middletown High School. 3 in JWemortam WALTER MESICK In Memory of Our Beloved Fellow Classmate and Friend WALTER MESICK The Class of 1954 OLD FAMILIAR PLACES Harold E. Under the capable leader- ship of Marie Milardo, captain, and Doris Bon- vino, co-captain, these girls were seen inspiring the team on to victory. Dressed in their white skirts and sweaters for football and their black skirts and white sweaters for basketball, all ten girls put everything they had into encouraging our Tigers to win. « 58 CROSS COUNTRY Second Row: Darling, Coughlin, Dittman, Golnik, Briggs, Hull, Coach Bozoian. The purpose of the Girls’ Sports Club is to arrange intra-murals and play days with other high schools. On the night before Thanksgiving, this club sponsors its annual dance. Helping to sell the tickets and to make the dance a success are the representatives from each section room. A meeting is held once a month for all mem- bers. The officers are Rose DiMauro, president; Eleanor Jurczak, vice-president; Betty Bascetta, secretary; and Josie LoGuidice, treasurer. The club is advised by Mrs. Jean Gagnon. 63 BOYS RIFLE TEAM Standing: Schilke, Putnins, Sowinski, Mr. Tucci. Seated: Wisneski, Woods, DiTomasso. This year's Boys’ rifle team, captained by Benny DiTomasso and expertly coached by Mr. Tucci, participated in twenty matches, including six C.C.I.L. meets, the C.C.I.L. Tournament, and a state meet. The squad also competed in the Connecticut Secondary School Rifle League, which included matches with Hamden, Staples High, Hill House, Notre Dame, and Loomis. Woodrow Wilson was trounced by the score of 881-842; Manchester, Windham, Notre Dame, and Torrington were among the other teams who met defeat at the hands of the M.H.S. Shooters. 64 SWIMMING TEAM Standing: Armstrong, Stanek, Summers, Cotonghi, Stubbins, Pessoni, Manager Baskin, Coach Leggett Seated: Ferraguto, DiMauro, Trebbe, Magnano, Byland, Citron. Kneeling: Lull, Edelberg, Doherty Chamberlain. This year the M.H.S. swimming team, coached by Sidney Leggett, consisted of fourteen boys. Early in December, Joe Magnano and Ron By- land, two seniors, were elected co-captains for the season. Practice sessions were held at the Y.M.C.A. pool after school several days a week. Among the teams with which the M.H.S. Mer- men competed were Portland, Hartford Public, Buckley, Sacred Heart, Crosby, Torrington, Windham, Manchester, Bristol, and Meriden. At the end of the year, boys who have made fifteen points receive letters; others receive numerals. 65 TENNIS Standing: Goodrich, Ferraguto, Goldberg, Gross, Coach Arnold. Kneeling: DiMauro, Damberg, Marchese, Edelburg, Baskin. The tennis team is composed of a regular five- man team which participates in most of the matches at home and all the matches away. All together the team consists of about twenty boys, who are divided into two groups, the varsity and the jayvees. The team has two coaches, one for each group, and holds two sessions a day. The team plays a regular schedule, which is com- posed of C.C.I.L. teams. The team captain is elected before the first match. Each year three or four boys are chosen by the coach to participate in the state tournament at Wesleyan. « 66 TRACK Standing: Coach Bezoin, Chester, McCormack, Delegan, Jascot, Schaefer, Salemi, Hull, Citron, Lock- hart, Summers, Armstrong, Stanek. Kneeling: McKnight, Leonard, Perruccio, Sneed, Dooley, Hurd, Carta. The 1953 track team deserves much credit. The boys had an undefeated season. They won the state indoor title for the third time in suc- cession, and also tied for the state outdoor title. They then won the C.C.I.L. championship for the first time for M.H.S. They finished first at the University of Connecticut relays, and quali- fied four boys for the New England meet at Boston. Jack McKnight broke the record for the high school shotput, and Dick Dooley set two school records in the 440 and the discus. The boys elected Jack McKnight and Dick Dooley co-captains for 1954. 67 Most Dependable JANE SPAETH JOE HARTIGAN Done Most for M.H.S.
