Any girl who has been a member of a homemaking class in junior or senior high school may become a member. Its purpose is to promote great- er appreciation of good home and family life for all. The club conducts a work- shop for out of class projects for home, school, and community interests. The num- erous gatherings include business and social meetings, talks on interesting phases of service of careers and helpful hints for good grooming. The officers are Eleanor Satagaj, president; Connie Andrews, vice- president; Jane Shekosky, secretary; and Josephine Bak, treasurer. Back row: Alary Ann Pillarella, Anna Vereen, Shirley Swanson, Josephine Bak, Jackeiine Warley. Front row: Eleanor Satajay, June Sheskosken, Katherine Spackowski. Betsy Sullivan, Jane Ribera, Mrs. Crawford, Lucy Cubeta, Lucille Arcidiacino. G.A.A. The Girls’ Athletic Association is one of the most active organizations in the school. It is open for membership to all girls interested in sports. This club is under the leadership of Mrs. Crawford, physical education teacher. The organizations which make-up this associa- tion are bowling, under Miss D’Apice, rifle, cheer - leading, badminton, tennis, tumbling, and basketball. The large variety of sports enables many girls to participate in a sport of their choice. During the first part of the year the organization sponsors a dance, one of tjie most important and successful events of the season. G.S.L. The letters G.S.L stand for Girls’ Stu- dent League of which every girl in the school is a member. This year advised by Miss Dorothy Wigmore the league has been highly successful. Teachers' secre- taries were chosen, and four drives, va- rious assemblies, and even a radio program were conducted. For its social field the league sponsored a Freshmen-Junior party and the annual May spring dance at which a queen is elected and crowned. To terminate the season the eleven members on the executive board will be replaced by the newly-elected officers and another successful year will be past. Back row: Evelyn Rizzo, Margaret Hill. It is the duty of this person to acquaint the students with the laws and bills that are enforced in the school, and to bring to their attention the proceedings of every meeting. Suggestions toward the welfare of our school are made to the representative. These suggestions may become a bill upon the approval of both the House and the Senate. Since the first meeting, at which time Ed Caffrey was elected Speaker, many im- portant steps have been taken toward cre- ating and maintaining good citizenship. i NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The Middletown High School Chapter of the National Honor Society was found- ed in 1934. The requisites for membership are excellence in scholarship, leadership, service, and character. A student may be elected into the organization either in his junior or senior year. The names of all junior and senior honor students are voted upon by the faculty, the members of the society, and the other candidates. The emblem of the Honor Society is a key- stone, representing strength, unity and firmness, and a flaming torch, representing the light of knowledge. PLAYMAKERS The Playmakers’ group is one of the most important activities at Middletown High School. In addition to the study of the various techniques connected with the production of a play they study the history of drama and some current events in the world of drama. The members of this dramatic club endeavor to develop poise and self-confidence by participating in the various projects of the club. The club members enjoy a combination of work and play in their desire to learn more about what happens behind the glow of the footlights. Under the capable direction of Miss Molly Trinkaus the club enjoyed a success- POLICE FORCE Much responsibility rests on the shoul- ders of the members of the Police Force, whose duty it is to enforce the laws and regulations of the school. They are a very important part of our student government. They work directly with the Supreme Court. Under the capable supervison of Mr. C. V. Johnson, the Police Force kept a clean record, one of which Middletown High School should be proud. David Tucker was Police Chief, with Eugene Russell as deputy. Lieutenants were Carl Samuelson and Doc Svihovec. Second row: Bob Hodge. Donald Svihovac, Lena Licitra, Gene Russell, Steve Liepzinger. Front row: James Smith. Sal Amara, Dave Tucker, Willie McRae, Girl Samuelson. SENATE The representatives of each class file into Room 15 every Wednesday, third period, to approve and pass legislation that will benefit the Republic of Middletown High School. The Senate, in conjunction with the House of Representatives and the remaining legal organizations of the school, sponsored a Carnival Ball. This was the first attempt at such an affair, but we hope there will be many more in the future. The Senate participated in one of the first radio programs of the year, thus acquaint- ing the city with the government of Mid- dletown High. We may well be proud of our high rating student government. Standing: Irving McRae, Joan Dennison, Bob Hodge, Jerry Behm, Margaret Hill, Tony Cannata, Willard McRae. Seated: Connie Perruccio, Rose DiTomosso, Jane Bartolotta, Lena Licitra. SUPREME COURT On November 27,1949, the first session of the 1949-50 Supreme Court came to order. In their places were Seb Amara, chief justice; Bill Mann, defense attorney; Seymour Friedman, prosecuting attorney; Athena Lesbines, clerk; and Dave Tucker, chief of police. These officers were nominated and chos- en by the students of M.H.S. We also have a revolving jury. This jury is chosen for a period of four weeks, and is composed of both boys and girls from each of the four classes. Under the direction of Mr. Frank I Tucci, cases are tried each Monday and Thursday in Room 15. TIGER TALES Once again the student paper of Middle- town High had completed a year of suc- cessful publication. Tiger Tales,” a bi- monthly publication, gives to its readers news of school events, student activities, sports, and editorials. Ann Louise Wrubel, our editor-in-chief, worked successfully during the year with her assistants Paul D'Orio, feature editor; Geralding Clew, news editor; Myron Poliner, sports editor; Marie Publisi, alumni editor; Lorraine Pasculano, columnist; Devra Newberg, business man- ager; and Grayce Ahern, editorial writer. Each staff was under the supervision of a faculty adviser from the English Depart- ment, with Mr. Walker as general adviser for the paper. First row: John Annino, Roger Morgan, Guy Inferra, Co-Captains John Biss, Dennis Brennan, Francis Monnes, Jerry Dowling, Angelo Tringali. BASEBALL The 1949 season found the Middletown High baseball team in the building stages. The names of many underclassmen domi- nated the line-up. Only co-captains Johnny Biss and Dennis Brennan could be called veterans. Southpaws Johnny Bliss and A1 Kowal- ski were Coach A. A. Johnson’s leading pitchers. Center Fielder Guy Inferrera led the batters compiling an average of .353. The line-up included Francis Monnes, Jimmy Dunn, Pete Satagaj, Roger Mor- gan, and Jake Dowling in the infield, Dennis Brennan, Guy Inferrera, and John Annino in the outfield. Although the Tigers had a poor season, the year 1950 looks like a bright one. BASKETBALL Middletown High School has always been well known for turning out alert bas- ketball teams; the 1950 edition was no exception. Captain Roger Morgan led an outfit consisting of himself and Gallito as for- wards, Gene Kelsey at the center post, Jim Giardina and Carl Campisi at the guard spots. The Tigers played a sixteen-game schedule, winning most of their games against some of the top schools in Con- necticut. Standing: Manager Bill Hunt, Willard MacRae, Guy Inferrera, Coach Waino Fillback, Sebastian Ortisi, Sam Vinci, Manager Vincent Capello. Seated: Gene Kelsey, Don Freiter, James Giardina, Captain Roger Morgan, Carl Campisi, Sebastian Gallito. Captain Morgan, Gene Kelsey, and Don Freiter will be lost through graduation. This year’s successful Jayvee squad will give Coach Fillback a wealth of material to work with for the 1950 season. St Sr CROSS COUNTRY The cross country team failed to win a single meet in six meets. Coach Orcutt, succeeding Mr. Robert Barrows, had a difficult task this season, because of the fact that only one letterman, Captain Joe Santostefano, returned. The boys all did their very best, but the lack of needed expereince was the cause of their main downfall. Their schedule was very difficult and for the most part with much larger schools. Next year with a more experi- enced team we hope to have a more suc- cessful season. Back row: Oscar MacArthur, Herbert Johnson, Assistant Manager Donald Bara- bon, Coach Orcutt, Manager James Colman, John Lessor. Seated: Rosario Sacia, Ronald Erickson, Jerry Kelly, Captain Joe Santostefano, Sebastian Garafalo, Bob Piasecki, Howard Leonard. Fourth row: H. Chowania, R. Peterson, S. Salafia, E. Scholl, J. Ciccarella, Assistant Coach Sweeny. FOOTBALL Coach Waino Fillback’s 1949 Tigers wound up with a fair season, winning six and losing four. They started out slowly, losing to Plainville in a night contest in Middletown. The Tigers then took to the win column with five successive wins at the hands of Bristol, West Hartfor, Man- chester, Branford, and Meriden. The Tigers then lost the C.C.I.L. crown to Hamden. After trouncing Stonington, the Tigers were upset by Weaver. The final game of the campaign was staged against Wilson, with Wilson winning a decisive game. The game was played at Wilson Field for the first time in the history of the series. RIFLE The Boys' Rifle Club has fulfilled the season's expectations of a successful year. The boys practiced either on Tuesday or Wednesday at the Armory under the able direction of Coath Tucci. The club notched eight victories as against two defeats in dual shoulder to shoulder com- petition. Once again this year the club has participated in the state and the national matches in New Haven. The climax of the season for six of the top boys was a trip to New York City in April, where they repre- sented M.H.S. in the Morling match against Metropolitan high school teams. Back row: Robert Kiley, Joe Malone, Ed Magnano, Robert Bolavia, Louie Rosen- berg, Coach Tucci, Joe Kutchalla, Bob Priscott, Kenny Rosenberg, Jimmy Young, Jim Cannatta. SWIMMING With the first dive into the pool and the first splash of water, Middletown High School started its 1949-50 swimming sea- son with a victory. Led by the able co-captains, Carl Sam- uelson and Don Fodaski, M.H.S. beat Bris- tol 42-33- Other competitors included Crosby High School, Hartford Public High School, Meriden High School, Buck- ley High School, Hamden High School, Manchester High School, West Haven High School, and East Haven High School. Since the beginning of the season a large number of boys came out for practice. Under the coaching of Mr. Rod Alton, the boys practiced at the Y.M.C.A. TRACK The Middletown track team, co-cap- tained by Bud Litka and Eugene Kelsey, certainly led their teams to a chain of vic- tories. Bud Litka, known as the triple threat man,” shot-put, javelin, high-jumping, with an average of 10 points a meet, cer- tainly stood out as an able head. Eugene Stilts” Kelsey with his five feet nine inches for high-jumping also stands out as the other back-bone of the team. Besides the Connecticut relays at Storrs, Connecticut, and the State meet at Yale, Middletown showed excellent competi- tion against William Hall High, Manches- ter, Bristol, New Britain, and Plainville High. Fourth row: Lifset, Martin, Friedman, Rosano, Hodge, Roccapriore, Ferrigno, Ross, Wrang. Third row: Goodell, Spang, Spang, Lifset, Marthers, Calnan, Kelly, DeForest, D’Emanuele, Lapila, Hunt. CHEERLEADING Dressed in their sparkling white uni- forms, set off by a blazing orange letter, the M.H.S. cheerleaders attempted to keep high the spirits of the spectators at the football and basketball games. Mrs. Crawford, physical education in- structor, very capably supervised the cheer- ing techniques of the squad. At a cheer- leaders’ clinic at Bridgeport University the group displayed their cheers, new and old, and included both jumps and cartwheels in their performance. They were com- mended for their originality and appear- ance. The group were also guests of Mans- field Training School at an assembly. Squads from both the schools performed. Evelyn Heckart, Helen Skubel, Marie Puglisi, Florentina Adorno, Rose Marie DeCarlo, Marie Carta, Vickie LaGuidice, Sophie Pattavina, Lena Licitra, Jane Bartolotta, Eleanor Cannatta, Eleanor Alessi. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL The senior class girls’ basketball team has been extremely successful in its four- year intramural competition. The team captured the trophy for two successive years, 1949 and 1950. Under the honorary captainship of Marie Carta, the girls led the team to an undefeated season. Florentina Adorno, Jane Bartolotta, Eleanor Alessi, Lena Lici- tra, Sophie Pattavina and Eleanor Cannat- ta have all played for four years; others who helped to make the team the success that it was are Louise Caso, Rose De Carlo, Helen Skubel, Evelyn Heckart and Vickie Loguidice. The team earned its victory in every respect, for the girls displayed good exam- ples of fair play and sportsmanship. Standing: Beatrice Cornish, Molly Rizzo, Marilyn Hanson, Barbara Garde, Barbara Conroy, Florentina Adorno, Norma Carlson, Betty Nelson. Kneeling: Janet Hanson, Lucy Gianni. BATON CORPS The Middletown High School Baton Corps is no longer a dream. Our major- ettes are proud of having held first place in New England States Championship of Majorettes for two successive years. With the capable leadership of Barbara Garde the girls performed a routine con- sisting of a marching drill and a twirling exhibition for many of the games. In order to do this well, each girl attended weekly lessons and practiced individually at home. Under the direction of Major Forest Harvey, every pupil worked hard to obtain her position in the line of marching dur- ing various seasons of the year. BOWLING The Middletown High School Bowling Club, which consisted of thirty girls, met each Wednesday after school at the Y.M.C.A. for a session of their favorite sport. The girls usually indulged in two strings of the game and between trips to the candy and coke machine keep each others scores. Miss D’Apice proved a good instructor, for the girls had an extremely good season. This year sport days were held with Woodrow Wilson and East Hamp- ton High Schools. Elected officers were as follows: Marie Zampine, president; Fran- cis Satajae, vice-president; Jennie Sarostra, secretary; and Florence Kmiteck, trea- surer. RIFLE Every Monday the Middletown High Girls’ Rifle team and their adviser, Mrs. Crawford, board the Middlefield bus head- for the Middlefield Rifle Range, where they try their luck knocking out the bull’s eyes.” Here they are taught how to handle and shoot the guns properly. During the year they compete in triangular meets with the Wilson boys’ and girls’ teams and our own boys’ team. They also engage in postal matches with other rifle teams throughout the state. At the end of the season there is a state meet in New Haven, where all the rifle teams compete to deter- mine the state champion. hScJ Hh ut MOVE ALONG NOW WATCH THAT DIET. NO ERRORS.
