Administrative Alterations in Class Management Initiate New Regulations The size of M.H.S.'s student body called for new procedures in management. Each class-senior, iunior, and sophomore-was assigned to its own assistant principal who was responsible for the administrative work. This division by grade level necessitated other changes. Managers of student affairs assumed the duties previously held by the deans of boys and girls. The counseling department was revamped to co- ordinate with the new class management. To make the student-counselor realtionship more personal and more meaningful, counselors will work with the same students throughout their high school years. This makes it easier for a counselor to evaluate his students and write recommendations for them when applying to colleges or for iobs. Two counselors were assigned to each class. School size also called for stricter reinforcement of rules and regulations, new modes of disciplinary action were initiated to cope with misconduct. Assistant principals were responsible for the student conduct in specific areas of the school building. Teachers and hall monitors were on duty in corridors and watched restrooms for violations of the rules. Those who ignored the no smoking policy, who were guilty of insubordination, who carried weapons on school premises, or who disrupted classes were held responsible for their deeds. Violators of civil laws, such as the ringing of a false fire alarm, were reported directly to civil authorities. Parents were notified of misconduct, a three-day in-school suspension usually followed. Out-of-school suspension could not exceed ten days. Repeated violators were faced with expulsion. upper leh Mrs. Crone discusses Chant Barton's future aspirations. Counselors not only advise students with personal problems, but also arrange schedules and help plan careers lower left Ms. Hamilton records Jeff Bolin's tardiness. ln addition to taking attendance daily, the managers of student affairs have many other duties, such as talking with parents, issuing permits, and taking disciplinary action. left A student awaits the termination of his dreary three-day in- school suspension. 7
