Replacing Dr. Schneider, this is Dr. Sconzo's first year as Superintendent of Schools. As we await the changes that might take place, Dr. Sconzo is enthusiastic about his plans. He hopes his re- districting program will result in better use of our school facilities by balancing enrollment more effectively. He plans to return to four year high schools, creation of grades 6-8 mid- dle schools and grades K-5 elementary schools. In addition, he will look toward recommenda- tions from the Comparability Review Commit- tee to set the agenda for improving and equalizing our high schools. Dr. Sconzo believes education is the most important investment that the Federal Gov- ernment can make in the future of our country. He is concerned about continued cuts in feder- al aid to education and states, If education was important enough to investigate and criticize via the National Commission on Excellence in Education, then it should be important enough to fund 'federally prescribed' and needed improvements. Dr. Sconzo defines success as working hard to be the best you possibly can be. Success is never really achieved by one person but is shared with the many people who help and support you along the Way. He encourages students to take their responsibility and to learn seriously. Students should take advan- tage of the many educational opportunities Middletown schools offer. As advice to the graduating class on careers, Dr. Sconzo suggests, Be sure to choose careers that you believe will bring you the most self-satisfaction. ln essence, it is critical that you anticipate enjoying the career path you choose to follow. Also, be on the alert and ready for changes in circumstances in order to take advantage of new opportunities. Adapta- bility is a strength, not a weekness! ' . , P Principal A touch of class, a feeling and spirit of revival, a renaissance - the New Northvg phrases we can hear from Middletown North's biggest promoter, prin- cipal Mr. Nicholas Campanile. This year our school has taken a new look. Mr. Campanile calls the renovation work, A five and a half million dollar face lift.', He hopes that the new appearance will instill in all students and fac- ulty a sense of pride to accompa- ny the sense of tradition that, for many years, has been ours. Although the recent renova- tions have made our school building considered among the very best, there is still work to be completed. Our principal has re- quested the replacement of the windows on the back of the school, a complete refurbishing of the auditorium and installa- tion of additional shrubbery around the campus. As a result of the restoration, school programs have been en- larged and benefited. The new gymnasium facility should moti- vate more students to take part in our athletic programs, as sup- port of our school sports is an 22 expression of pride and spirit. Mr. Campanile hopes our aca- demic programs can be im- proved by utilizing the comput- er in allareas of instruction. Next year, our principal looks forward to launching a Program of the Fine and Performing Arts. It is expected to offer courses in theatre arts, dance, music, art, film, television and photography. As an experienced educator, Mr. Campanile sees trends in ed- ucation relating to a more se- rious attitude taken by students toward learning. The influence of our complex society and how it will affect their future is of concern to many young men and women. Mr. Campanile advises the graduating seniors to pre- pare for a rapidly changing soci- ety. Learn to learn well and quickly for then you will be able to adapt to change. Have the courage to live life fully, for only then you will be able to experi- ence the self-respect that you must have to enjoy life. For years, football has been an all-time favorite, and Middletown North's Lions are truly a reason for our school's enthusiasm for the sport. Under the coaching of Victor Kubu, the team led a winning season with a final record of 7-3. In the line-up for the offense were: quarterback Chad McCallum, Kurt Reed as our tailback, Dan Nole as the split end, Chris Savage as tight end, and Bob Hall in the tackle position. The defense was definite- ly strong this year with Mark Cerbo and Kevin Friebott as linebackers Ron Binn as monsterback, Mike Parulis as noseguard, Steve Gutjahr as tackle, and Bryan Kernan as cornerback. Although the Lions did not win a championship, they always came on to the field and gave one hundred percent of themselves. In the game against Matawan, the team lost with a score of 14-6, but to prove they were not licked, they came back strong against Freehold with a final score of 31-0. Coach Kubu thought that if the team had learned anything it had to be discipline. 'The player's actions and his performance are part of a machine that either works or completely falls apart. According to assistant coach Don Ayers, This year's team was the hardest working team that we ever had at North, and although we did not win a championship, our players are champions as people and as individuals. The team ended the season with a victory over South at our tradition- al Thanksgiving Day game. Pride and dedication characterized our Lions and these qualities clearly placed them above the rest. 3 ,N ,MH , .. ,.,.. .... . f:..::::::...:1..: . Under the coaching of Joseph Gomulka, the girls were taught to be competitive and to believe that they could beat anyone if they really had confidence in themselves. A remarkable display of endurance was shown in a meet against Matawan. The top runner, Kari Torjussen, was injured during the race but continued to struggle onward. Kari established herself as an important part of the team. She ran the longest distance of 3.1 miles in 20:44 and also set the home course record at Holmdel Park. This season, Coach Joseph Gomulka guided a winning team. The enduring practices of six days a week and running four to six miles a day enabled them to finish first and second at most meets.
