Those showing a higher knowledge of the so-named subject, by winning the local Latin contest were Harry Riggs, Florence Dasher and Mary E. Green in the second year and Vera Riley and Mable Hart in the first year. Vera Riley dis- playing her qualities of determination, also won first in the county contest and represented Henry County at Rushville, only to loose by a few points there. U g M -A FK MONROE THORNBURG Here is the Keystone in the air-tight de- fense of the Cossacks. Rudy did not play the guard position all during the year. How- ever, he displayed the same skill at the offensive position as he did in the defensive position. Rudy will be lost by graduation this year and it will be hard to find another to fill his place. JOHN LEWIS Johnny played the position of guard this year. Nothing delighted the fans more than to see him dribble the ball. During all his career he has played heady basketball. john- ny has only one year to play with tthe Cos- sacks. ' SAMUEL ELLISON Sam played the positions of forward and center. All through the season he has shown the old Cossack fight. He was always known as a hard driver at the basket. Sam has one more year to play for the Cossacks. MALCOLM EMSWELLER Mac has been one of the greatest scoring forwards which Middletown has ever pro- duced. Every minute found him in the fray. Mac is an excellent basket shot. He has one year to score for his Alma Mater. VAUGHN JAMESON Boob was held off the team at the last of the season by an injuryg however, he re- turned before the tournament. In the games which he played at New Castle he did ine. He has two more years to play with the Cossacks. WOODROW ZIRKLE Woodv played forward all year. In the games which he played he proved himself well worthy of his position. Not only did he hold his man on the defensive but was very effective on the offensive. He has an- other year to play his position. -..P ref f- - J ,fa--- l Nx , x -I : MAHLON DENNIS This year is Mike's first year on the squad. He came out at the beginning of the year. He played with the second and a few games with the Hrst team. This is Mike's last year with the Cossacks. We wish him success in whatever line of work he enters. WELDON RECTCR Weldy played forward during the year. He is only a Freshman and has three more years to play with Middletown. ROBERT LEWIS Bob played guard during the year. At the beginning of the year he was handicapped by an injury and was out of the line-up for weeks. When he returned he showed the same Hghting spirit he showed before. He has two years yet to play. WAYNE REEDY During the year Wayne did not plav a regular position on the team. However when called upon to enter the game, he was al- ways ready for the frav. Wayne has three more years ahead of him in athletics. In these years the fans are hoping to see him develop into one of the main scorers. COACH ANDREWS Here is the mentor of the Cossacks. He needs no introduction because he is known nearly everywhere in basketball circles. This is Mr. Andrews' third year with the Cos- sacks. During these three years Middletown has had her most successful teams. MR. BYRNE A great amount of the praise for the suc- cess of Middletown athletic teams should go to Mr. Byrne. He has managed the team during the year and when a little cheer was needed to help the bovs to win he was ready to do anything in his power. 1 'E it X-N..-.-,M..fYT'M'mm ::-H Y-+. -,-,fav--H 'WY' ' 'Q-s1,......-.. .......,..-..-..Y, Tx' :ac Q f f ' :T 1 ' f Athletics At the beginning of the school year, Mr. Andrews had left over from his former squad Thornburg, Emswiller and Lewis. Around these boys he built his team. Diiferent boys that entered high school from the eighth grade filled' in places and second team men had their chance. Around these three men he built his squad. This squad turned out to be one of the best that Middletown has ever produced. This team played nineteen regular scheduled games and played in three tourneys. The team played twenty-seven games, of these twenty-seven they won twenty. Middletown in all these games scored eight hundred twelve points against their opponents five hundred eighty one. This makes an average score of thirty to twenty-one in favor of Middletown. With the team which is left, a good team should be developed next year for M. H. S. The boys who leave the school at graduation- time never to return to the old days when they fought for their Alma Mater. By leaving thev do not loose their school spirit. They have developed the spirit of battle as they were fighting for their honor and the honor of the school. K ef -r rf' -am? gr l 1 I . l l l I l l l l I.. I ll 1 I Q N GIRLS' BASKETBALL TEAM Rah! Yea! Team! The girls of M. H. S. believing in women's rights and not to be outdone hy the girls in the neighboring communities and throughout the United States, organized a haskethall team. The team, although wholly inexperienced and com- posed for the most part of Freshmen and Sophomores, gained the true value of good sportsmanship and physical and mental training as well as much recreation. After repulsing many knocks, overcoming many obstacles and drilling many hours they ended a successful year with six victories and one tie, and the determination to do hetter next year. Mt. We elected as our president Richard Wilson, as vice-president Kennetn Hodson, and as secretary Margaret Cummins. We chose as our motto, Sink or Swim g as our class flower, the American Beauty Roseg and as class colors, purple and white. The next year our number had decreased to only thirty-two. This year George Rector was elected president, Kenneth Hodson vice-president, and Dora Mae Minnick, treasurer. During the Junior year our number had dwindled to twenty-seven. Monroe Thornburg was chosen president, Wilbur jones vice-president, and Mary Thorn- burg, secretary. The class play, Sonny Jane, was given during the latter part of the year. Later the class gave a reception for the Seniors. When we assembled again this fall, there were just twenty-nine, two having withdrawn from our ranks since that time. The Seniors gave one play, Wrecking Robert's Budget, during the earlier part of the year. Later in the year another play was given. This year we have chosen Wilbur jones, presidentg Frank Sho- walter, vice-presidentg and Virginia Kelly as secretary. We pause here to pay tribute to our teachers who have been always ready and willing to help us. We feel that our lives will be a great deal better and that we shall be able to do more good in the world because of our association with them and because of the knowledge and experience we have gained in Middletown High School. -- T --U-If 'FB fx- 1 K 1-Im J K 13 Il: F -- l l Elie Qlnaaark Idnurnal Volume XXXII-No. 26.
