A i Aw This year's Varsity Football team finished with a disappointing record of four wins and five losses. The season could be divided in half. In the first half, the team went 0-4, but stuck together to win the next four out of five. The loss in the season's second half, to league-champion Port Jervis, snapped a three game winning streak. Once again, the Middies bounced back to defeat Cornwall in the Homecoming game by a score of 22-13. The highlight of the year was at Highland Falls where in the pouring rain the Middies pulled together to drown a late rally and win 14-13. Among the outstanding seniors were: team captain tackle Gary Seekamp, halfback Rod Whitby, fullback and linebacker Walt Deisseroth, defensive tackle Mark Gliemi, guards George Morace and Ed Mor- rone, center Ken Munro, offensive guard tackle Ken Ritter, and end Kerry Finn. The graduating seniors leave an able team of future starters such as Bill Fortier, Nelson Reed, Keith Depew, Mike Meade, Larry Beairsto, crazy Phil Hapke, Bob Howard, Dave Worden, and Steve Dineen. 1 A, ',,f 4525 Left To Right-Front Row: Rod Whitby, Mike Meade, Tony Melendez, john Waizenegger, Jim Young, Nelson Reed, John Heppes, Bucky St. Hilaire, Keith Depew, Ken Munro, Ed Morrone, manager-Jeff Dodd. Q.. Q. ' i, ,WW Fm, Boys' Basketball The Middies Boy's Varsity Basketball Team earned themselves a final OCL record of 7-7, and a 10-8 over- all season record. It was a season of ups and downs for the Middies as they defeated Port Jervis and Cornwall twice but lost to Valley Central and Monroe-Woodbury twice. They defeated a tough Montie team at Monticello, as Traig McElhaney won the game in overtime with a soft jumper. The Middies got great help during the season from the bench as Doug Catizone, Jim Meikle, Mark johnson, Joe Wagner, and Keith Depew all helped to defeat Cornwall at home by a score of 83-64. Andy Matthews, Mark Brown, Aaron VanDyke and Rod Whitby had many clutch shots and rebounds that helped the Middies on to victory. The Middies also beat Washingtonville 81-78, bombed Port by 38 points and destroyed Minisink Valley 86-46. Middletown, headed by Coach Cox, finished high in the OCL standings and has a very good chance of making the sectionals at Union College on March 6th, Qi I 2 ff? 1' 3 - -. . .k . As a first year team playing against already established squads, their losses were not unexpected but Coach Diane Wanser never lost faith in the girls. A 22-24 loss to the Minisink Valley early in the season gave them confidence and hope for a victory in the games to come. After dropping six straight decisions, the team finally put it together to outlast Monroe-Woodbury 20-18 in a tight de- fensive battle. Varsity In only their second year of com- petition, the Girls' Varsity Basket- ball team made a strong but un- successful attempt to gain the O.C.L. crown. Dedicated Coach Kathy Sannwald deserves much credit for the success of the team which produced a 9-5 record and a tie for third place. Outstanding offensive player Lois Ann Hayes led the Western division of the O.C.L. in scoring throughout the season and finished with a 16,3 average. Joyce DeGroat and Sara Dodd were also among the top 20 scorers in the division, while Mary Donnelly and Sue Provost turned in strong defensive efforts. Ellen Greiwe, Becky King, Donna Bub, and Adele Giruadin added depth and additional strength totheteam. Experience should be the key to the success of the next year's squad as co-captain Ellen Greiwe and Sue Provost will be the only players lost to graduation. Sk... Bo s' Tennis 'fi This year's Boys' Tennis Team looks very promising. Under the experienced eyes of team coach Pete Annis, the Middies are hoping to avenge some unexpected defeats suffered during last year's play. They totaled only two league defeats along with numerous wins, in and outside of regular play. The team will again be led by the devastating play of return- ing senior 1. The Team lost Walter Lynch, midway through the season, and ended up with a 5-6 record for the year. The win-loss record does not show the fact that Dave Ellison, Frank Heter, Doug Porto, Marshall Cline, and Walter Lynch kept the rec- ords falling in almost every meet. School and pool records were broken and rebroken 35 times throughout the Middie swim season. Next year will be a rebuilding year for the Middie mermen with only five returning lettermen, and the adjustment to their new 25 yard pool. Last year our team went almost undea- feated, losing only to Monroe-Woodbury in the last meet, 72-69. This year Mr. Cline is out for revenge. Using the Indoor Team as his base, he intends to add a number of top performers from last year's squad, plus a large reserve of first time runners. Among the stars from last year that we expect to see this spring are Dave Ellison, Mark Liss, Phil Hapke, joe Wagner, and Keith Depew, but there could be alot of surprises in store for us this spring among the freshmen and sophomores. At any rate, the spring of 1976 promises to produce one of the strongest track teams Middle- town has ever fielded. .5 . J N? The sprinters, led by top returnees Mike Ash- craft, Jimmy Young, Ed Morrone, Glen Johnson and , hurdler Craig Hunter were probably the strongest group T of competitors on the team. Distance men, however, led by Paul Silipino, jack Morrissey, Brian Morrissey, Allen - Blair, and Steve Tilmont also put in a good showing. Field men led by pole vaulters Glen Brinkerhoff, Pete Lazier, and Glen Lewis, and high jumpers Tom Smith and Craig Hunter, showed power in their events. Baseball This year Middie Baseball will feature 10 re- turnees from last season's 18 man squad, and Coach Vic Liviccori, returning from a one-year sabbatical leave, will once again take the reins from last year's coach Richard Siers. Coach Liviccori vows to keep only 15 on the 1976 Var- sity Team, leaving many battles for jobs among returning Varsity men and moving up l.V. players. Three of last year's pitching staff will return, with john Scarano, Nelson Merced and Bob Taylor battling it out with Dave Wordon, Bucky St. Hilaire and Steve Dineen for the scarce hurling spots. Meanwhile, returning catcher Ken Ritter will have his hands full trying to hold a staring position over a stiff challenge from Bill Fortier. The rest of last years team, Mike Cuddy, Wally Deisseroth, Bob Eherts, Mark johnson, Tony Melendez and Rod Whitby will wait anxiously for final cuts to be made. Three juniors with shots at starting this year are: Mark Amodio, Mark Strecker, and Nelson Reed who was outstanding last year. All in all, Mr. Liviccori will have a real tough time picking his final fifteen.
