The Washington Trzp April 11 1950' The day for which the Sen rors had waited so long had finally arrived After five hours of assorted entertainment on the train we arrived in Baltimore Following an other half hour wait in the Baltimore terminal we were met by our bus drivers Gordon Ernie and Penny who took us to Annapolis the capitol of Maryland At the Naval Academy the shy sen lor girls were reminded that there were no extra seats for mxdshnpmen Making the best of the Slflla t1on we were thrilled by the historic and modern scenery The beautiful Chapel and massive Ban croft Hall were the two mam points of mterest as far as buildings were concerned The trip into Washlngton seemed endless but we finally reached the Ebbxt and food O1 At the supper table the following bits of conversation were overheard Gosh our rooms are small and Hey we havent got a radio Eight oclock we set out for the sights at night It may have been cold that night but the massive statue of Lincoln warmed the hearts of many The Congressional Library was our next documents Upon reachrng the hotel we found the fire escapes rn the mterest of safety and practiced us mg them fwhen the chaperones werent aroundj However miny of the more ambitious mdrvrduals went for a tour of Washington on their own After a restful night we were all awake bright and early and antrcrpatmg our 2nd day The Bureau of Printing and Engraving was our first stop Many of our Seniors were heard to whisper Gosh look at those five dollar bills' The Pan American Buxldrng was one of the most beautiful and captured the mterest of our camera fiends as well as the Spanish Students With the Capitol building as a background the boys and goxls posed for their class picture Durrng our tour through the Capitol building we reached the Senate Chambers rn time to see Vice President Alben Barkley open the session After a hurried lunch we left for a tour of residential Washington Our visit to the Tomb of the Unknown Sol dier left us with a feeling of reverence Bus 107 was fortunate enough to have seen President Tru man and his family welcome Pres1dent Gonzaoles Videlo of Chile Our last stop of the afternoon was Mt Ver non Again the cameras began clicking to capture the singular beauty of Washington s home After drnner we were free until curfew The most popular rendezvous were the movles Lotus Club The Blue Mirror The Ambassador with the swimming pool and Glen Echo the local amusement park However some prefer red the solitude of the hotel After curfew in the warmth of our spacious rooms we discussed the days events celebrated birthdays played cards and generally kept awake We spent most of Thursday mormng m the Smithsonian Institute The remainder of the morning was spent climbing the Washington Monument the one time during the tr1p when the chaperones came to a parting of the ways The jefferson Memorial and the cherry blos soms were other never to be forgotten sights After lunch we were escorted fwhat an es cort through the FBI Buildxng where several stra1 ght' At the Franciscan Monastery we saw recre ations of the old Roman catacombs The last night and 'l Shortly after curfew the tenth floor discovered that the hotel oficrals didnt appreciate good musrc Af ter a bit of persuasion all returned to a room I wonder why everyone gathered in 1002 and 2077 Friday morning dawned bright and clear for some The mam attraction of the morning tour was the National Gallery of Art However many more were attracted to another hour s sleep and souvenir huntrng After lunch tif you were fortunate to get some we left for a tour of Maryland that ultx mately led us to Baltlmore We hesrtatmgly sand goodbye to our bus dm ers and boarded the tram Eight oclock Friday night 127 exhausted Senrors and six even more exhausted chaperones arrived back home We bade adreu to Mr Little the Warrens Morleys and Rogerses and doggedly made our way home to sleep BETTY GARDNER BILL SPRINGER I U , . - . - .
