We hope the new and modern facilities have made a genuine contribution to their education. We also hope that the classes of the future will live up to the highest ex- pectations of the school and the community in the use and care of the new school and in the attainment of their own most worthy goals. Superintendenfs Message This has been quite a year! On the opening day of school, our students entered into our high school's hall of knowledge only to discover instead, a, partitioned gymnasium with classrooms on one side and a huge covered pile of instructional materials on the other. Any sound, intelligent, and logical adult would surely have forecast nothing less than utter chaos. For high school to be conducted under such conditions, learning could certainly not continue on in an efficient manner. However, in typical teenage fashion, you did the unpredictable by conducting yourselves as mature adult students when in a most unusual and difficult setting and for a three-month period. When construction of the new high school building was completed during early December, an enormous amount of assistance was needed in the conversion of our high school from the gymnasium to our new quarters, and in a minimum amount of time. Once again you responded in a fabulous manner and within several days, school was being held in our marvelous new home. The last five or six months spent in the new building and before the close of school required a great deal of adjustment by all people. You, the students, once again rose to the occasion and accomplished the feat in an outstanding fashion. It is seldom, if not rare, that we are fortunate enough to experience or be a part of such spirited group co-operation. We were fortunate enough to have experienced such a feeling at least three times during the past year. It is basically for the above mentioned reasons that I will long remember with pride this school year and I strongly suspect that the feeling is mutual with you as well. Sincerely yours, Otto Sempell District Superintendent Middletown Unified Scholl District Middletown Unified School District Board of Trustees LEFT TO RIGHT: Mr. de Montigny, Mrs. Comstock, Mr. Darby, Mr. Frates, Mr. Bell. The school year of 1962-63 has been a period of advancement and attainment for the Middletown Unified School District. We have seen our dreams of a beautiful new high school realized. At times, it did not seem possible the school would ever grow beyond the planning stage. Due to the hard work put forth by our administrator, Otto Sempell, with a large degree of cooperation from parents, students, and the community itself, the new plant was finished not too long after the beginning of the school term which began September 24. The board wishes to extend to the faculty and students a hearty note of thanks for a job well done. We, the members of the board, feel sure that the students who have the privilege of attending this fine school will, in years to come, look back to their school days with real pride. May we of the Board of Trustees once again say Thank you and God bless each and every one of you as you go forth to combat the world, that you may be better citizens from your daily contact with the people of the Middletown schools who have guided and counseled you as you progressed from freshmen to graduating seniors. Only three could be chosen from these students and, with the teachers judging, Lucille Jardine, Billie Fechner, and Bruce Bailey were chosen. These three then spoke before the Lion's Club members and any visitors who were present. The judges Annette Comstock, Vernon Darby, and Dorothy Palmer, chose Bruce Bailey as the winner. Bruce then went to the area contest in Kelseyville. We regret that he did not win top honors there but it is said he gave the winner a real run for his money. nited ations Contest For the first time, the Odd Fellow and Rebekah Lodges in Lake County sponsored a delegate to the United Nations Pilgrimage For Youth Tour. It enables a student, either a Sophomore or Junior, to make a historical tour of the United States and spend a Week at the United Nations Building in New York. The contest consists of a written examination on the working of the United Nations, the filling out of an experience sheet, and a five-minute speech on My Community and World Affairs. Gary Copson was the local winner, competing against Gary Faulkner. Gary then entered the dis- trict contest where he won third place. It is hoped that next year more of our local students will participate . p ss D ,,, , Football Dance Royal Family Runners-Up or Pincesses Crowning of King Prince Runners-up Crowning of the Queen 60 Princesses' smiles Royal Family , ..,i . .. ,:,, ,:, - p wifi VQEW 3...
