6 S(||g g 1 ;x - - - to ' M H,, CHESTNUT BURR 1964 Middletown High School Middletown, Maryland Published by Journalism Class :.: At ' : ' . S ' - Contents Foreword Another wonderful year has made history at M.H.S. Can you recall each precious, fleeting moment? Will you be able to recall them several years from now? Throughout the pages of this, your 1964 CHESTNUT BURR, we have tried to capture your expressions of joy, disappointment, and hope. We have tried to capture you just AS YOU WERE . . . f, . Dedication As each senior looks back over his high school years one person stands out as having contributed most to his thoughts, deeds, and ideals . There are few ways to repay such a person. Therefore it is only fitting that we, the senior class, take this opportunity to dedicate the 1964 CHESTNUT BURR to J. Arthur Mott. You provided laughs when needed and work most of the time -- after all, what is a small term paper, a weekly assignment, an oral report, extra projects, plus reading the chapters? Yes, you kept us working, but you pre- pared some of us for college and all of us for the democratic society in which we will live . You have shown a love for teaching and a zest for life that will serve as an example for all of us and will merit our gratitude for years to come. ' ACULTT Mr. Harry V. Frushour Miss Pauline C. VanPelt Mrs . Ruth Gardner Principars Message I would like to direct your thinking in harmony with two quotations from the Book of Ecclesiastes . If the iron is blunt, and one does not whet the edge, he must put forth more strength; but wisdom helps one to succeed. Rejoice, O young man, in your youth, and let your heart cheer you in the days of your youth; walk in the ways of your heart and the sight of your eyes . But know that for all these things God will bring you into judgment. As each of you jnake your way in life, I hope you will find time to reflect upon these quotations . As you become older, new significances in the passages will be revealed to you . Graduation is a red letter day in your life . You have earned the right to be numbered with the many who have preceded you through Middletown High School . I have every confidence in you and your ability to succeed in the work which lies ahead . There are opportunities for tremendous advances in any field you choose. Please accept my heartiest congratulations on this your red letter day. I know I am a better person for having been privileged to know you . Mrs. Catherine Ahalt, Mr. Ahalt, Mr. Lionel Baker Miss Marilyn Bell, Miss Nancy Carmack, Mrs. Elizabeth Carter . Miss Faith Conway, Mrs. Anna Derr, Mr. Ross Foltz. Mr. James Eraser, Mr. John Horine. For a trip full of learning, this one certainly had its share of fun. It all be- gan when Alan Draper lost his necktie and didn ' t end until all the seniors were back in class . The Optimist Clubs of Frederick and Braddock Heights sponsored the trip to the Court House for thirty seniors from the Problems of Democracy classes . All students who had an average of C or better were eligible to take the trip. Those going were chosen by lots as there were more than thirty eligible . Once the students were chosen, a feeling of excitement began to steal over them . The appeal of wearing heels and suits and eating dinner at the Town and Country Restaurant was great . Almost every office in the Court House was visited by some of the students . Several groups ended by visiting the Circuit Court which was in session. A very good meal, punctuated by flash bulbs and laughs, was enjoyed by all. The trip was unanimously declared a success . 34 All Work Makes Jack And No Play A Dull Boy Seniors Are Well Known for Their Equal Amounts of Working and Loafing. 37 f UNDERCLASSMEN d Norma Harnc, Vice-President Pat Wise, Secretary Lynne Remsburg, Treasurer Catherine Albright Gloria Axline David Baker Ralph Bidle Juniors Dream of Class Rings, Shirley Bidle William Bland Edward Blickenstaff Phil Bohn Greta Boyer Beverly Brandenburg 40 George Brengle Diane Brown William Brown Patty Burger Barry Bussard Larry Cassell Jesse Clary Bernice Cline PromSy and Seniorhood.
