 about MHS changes? the “Hellos” and “Goodbof MHS ’88 Two changes that we considered “Goodbyes” were the revoking of students’ priviledge to smoke on the school grounds and the selling of candy in school. As stated in the Student Handbook, “On July 1, 1987 the Appoquinimink School District prohibited the possessing, using, dispensing or selling of any tobacco products on school grounds,” and in August the selling of candy in school was prohibited also. Some people didn’t mind the “no smoking” rule because they could now go out on the breezeway and get some fresh air, but others had their nicotine fits and felt that it was wrong for the administration not to allow them to smoke outside the school building. The candy issue wasn’t as controversial as the “no smoking ban, but it too caused some talk. The school store staff spent a few days brainstorming about how to replace the candy items which they used to sell. However new product lines began to appear, and soon students only barely remembered that candy was ever sold in the store. The Hellos” this year were the addition of one administrator, two new faculty members, and two new staff members. Mr. Freeman Williams wasn’t new to our school this year, but he did start a new job as Vice Principal. Mrs. Alison Matsen joined the faculty staff from St. Marks; she is now teaching French and German classes. Miss Stephanie Meyers came to us from Lake Forest; she is presently teaching biology and physical science. Mrs. Jami Weil is our new librarian, and she has come to us by way of Delaware State Library. Mr. Peacock is our new “A-K Guidance counselor, he comes to us with a M.Ed. in counseling.  about MHS Summer Clean-up? Contractors and students did their parts. Over the summer there were two “cleanup” operations that went on: one was the removal of asbestos from the shop wing, and the other was the work done by the Summer Work Program. When asbestos was found in the school during an inspection in 1984, it was removed from vital contact areas during Christmas break. In 1986 the school was ready to have contractors remove the asbestos in the shop wing, the boiler rooms, and the gym, however the company reneged on its contract and the removal was put off until the summer of '87. The asbestos was gone by the first week of school, but the shop wing didn't reopen right away because it now needed new floors, ceilings, pipe insulation and a paint job. The students in the Summer Work Program did a lot of work to brighten up MHS. With the help of their supervisor, Mr. Riblett, they painted all the metal doors in the school blue, made new picnic tables for under the trees near the breezeway, and rebuilt or refinished a lot of other things around MHS. 12
