Camp Crackdown - Season Shape-Up “Do it again . . . and do it right this time!” This familiar shout could be heard from one end of the practice field to the other during summer camps held during the last two weeks of Au- gust. Coaches, directors, and student leaders demonstrated technique and corrected errors while players listened attentively. Yes, it was time to get back into shape, both physically and mentally, for the fall season. No more trips to the beach, lazy days basking in the sun, or summer matinee movies. Instead, the alarm clocks started to ring and the days began bright and early. Why go through this? Simple . . . because the coaches and students feel it's necessary to have pre-season prac- tice to refresh their minds, which have been on vacation for three months! Football players performed condi- tioning drills, practiced plays, and co- ordinated team efforts during double- session practices in preparation for their first scrimmage against St. Eliza- beth's on Saturday, August 23, 1986. The band, newly under the direction of Mr. Harris, began practice at 9:00 AM and continued through until 4:00 PM in preparation for their first perfor- mance on September 12th. Student leaders also organized practices for the cheerleaders and for the field hockey and volleyball teams. In addition to the students attending summer camps, there were other young adults around giving their time to clean up the school. Paint brushes in hand and Mr. Riblett by their sides, these students gave MHS a fresher look. The results of such hard work helped to make our school a nicer building to be in and a more successful school in athletics and band. MHS Discovers Fads And Fashions “Don’t look now, but your shoes are untied” If styles follow the same path in years to come, mothers will not have to teach their children how to tie laces anymore. As far as fashion goes, the “in things were high topped sneakers left untied or shoes fastened with vel- cro bands instead of shoestrings. Col- orful shorts reaching just above the knee (commonly called jams ) were very popular, as were stirrup pants worn with a long sweater shirt. Fash- ion was more and more tending toward long, ankle-length clothing. Clothes were adopting some of the styles worn in the late 60’s. The fashionable colors were shades of blue, purple, and pink. Designer clothes seen frequently were Forenza sweaters, Coca-Cola shirts, Reebok sneakers, and good ole Levis blue jeans. Girls' hairstyles were becoming less radical. Geometric shapes and short bobs were faded out. While the male population seemed to favor a mohawk or a buzz” during football season, the females chose softer, more accentuat- ing looks such as longer versions of the bob cut or a mild perm with long hair. Some of the more popular celebri- ties included Bill Cosby, Cybill She- perd, and Don Johnson. In the world of music, Peter Cetera, Madonna, and Van Halen were often in the limelight. Pop music tended to be remakes or remixes of past tunes such as the New Edition's Earth Angel and Run DMC’s Walk This Way. Well- watched movies were “Top Gun, “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, and The Fly”. Each day at MHS brought a new variation on many fads and fashions. People tended to wear whatever they felt was appropriate for each particu- lar occasion. They even developed their own fads—ones which can be termed Classic Cavalier fads and fashions. Fads that are in: Cropped pants Paisley prints Over sized shirts 6
