“We’ve got spirit, how ’bout you?” Middletown High School possesses one characteristic that is especially ap parent to anyone just passing by. What is it? Well, it all starts with that Classic Cavalier Spirit. Pep rallies at MHS unleash the enthusiasm which had been building all week long. An outsider, seeing students walking around with paint (blue and white, of course) smeared from their necks up to the roots of their hair, cannot help but realize how dedicated MHS stu- dents are to demonstrating their pride. Perhaps the most memorable event at MHS is spirit week. This is when the students compete to show everyone who's got what it takes to be the most spirited. The winner is presented with a plaque at the Homecoming game. However, winning the coveted spirit stick is the true aim of each class. The winner is determined during the Home- coming pep rally after each class is given a chance to shout the specific cheer: Two bits, four bits, six bits, a dollar. All for the Cavaliers, stand up and holler!” The loudest class wins the spirit stick. At MHS, every day proves to be a memorable one. In Classic Cavalier Country, smiles have feeling in them and reassuring glances are there for the asking! The spirit of MHS is built on a foundation of trust and friend- ship. One look and you will see that the best are found at CLASSIC MHS. School spirit is very important to keep the school alive. The spirit makes the heartbeat of school in everybody ' Sherry Bowser “If there wasn't any spirit, nothing would be a success ... there would be nothing to look forward to. -Norma Brown Without school spirit and pride people wouldn't care, and caring and an extra effort is what makes MHS special. ' “Students will be more enthusiastic about learning at a school that has great school spirit.” 13

“ . . . And you have a nice day today.” Each year the Cavalier Yearbook Staff selects a faculty or staff member whom we feel deserves special recog- nition. This person is one who demon- strates outstanding effort in his or her field of work. Also, he possesses quali- ties such as charisma, willingness to go one extra step beyond the call of duty, and an easy but productive working relationship with peers and students. It is with great pleasure, then, that the 1987 Yearbook Staff an- nounces that this 1987 Cavalier is ded- icated to Mr. Michael Handlin. Mr. Handlin is married and is the father of four children. He began teach- ing here at Middletown High School in September of 1977. Mr. Handlin is to be commended for his exemplary ef- fort in all his various responsibilities and jobs around this school. He teach- es horticulture in the Vocational De- partment, where he recently directed the building of our new greenhouse. When not busying himself with the greenhouse, Mr. Handlin can be found in the auditorium directing the Stage Crew. He also coordinates the lighting and sound effects for assemblies, con- certs and plays, and during the foot- ball season Mr. Handlin announces the games from his perch up in the press box. In June, Mr. Handlin is in charge of setting up for the graduation ceremo- nies. His unenviable task is to prepare for an outside commencement, while also setting up for an inside com- mencement in the event of rain. Dur- ing the summer, he oversees the par- ticipation of several teams of FFA members in the Harrington Fair as well as helping to coordinate the MHS sum mer ag. co-op program. Pleasant, easy going, and caring, Mr. Handlin successfully balances an active school schedule and a happy family life. Mr. Handlin is a CLASSIC example of a dedicated teacher devot- ed to giving his all for the benefit of the school. 14
