CAVALIER VOLUME XXXV i - MIDDLETOWN HIGH SCHOOL 504 SOUTH BROAD ST. MIDDLETOWN, DELAWARE 19709 “Classic Cavalier” Comaraderie abounds! On September 4, 1986, Middletown High School opened its doors for the fifty-eighth time to greet students and faculty for the start of a new school year. Expressions varied from fresh- men's faces of amazement to the fa- miliar here-we-go-again look of the upper classmen. Of course, along with the nervous chatter and comparing of schedules, there were the renewals of existing friendships and the begin- nings of new ones. With summer com- ing to an end, it was time to get back into the daily routine of living by a schedule and cracking the books. However, there is more to Middle- town High School than just completing lessons and taking tests. MHS is a CLASSIC example of how a small school can make a big mark on its students, on the community and even on the state. In the past, visitors have been impressed by the abundance of genuine smiles on students' faces. This uplifting attitude is one in which we take much pride. Our academic program is also something to be proud of, with a whole list of electives to choose from: foreign languages, mu- sic, art, woodshop, and more. In addi tion to our academics, MHS has a school-wide high level of enthusiasm and spirit. This spark of spirit helps kindle the flame of comaraderie which leads the way to a successful year. All these elements combine to form a unique mix which is “CLASSIC CAVALIER. In your opinion, what defines a best friend? A person who cares, understands, loves, and appreciates you. •Yolanda Harvey Someone who believes in your abilities and doesn't judge you for your faults. •Kristen Homan To me a best friend' is your moth er because your friends and aquain- tances can come and go. but your mom will always be there.” Marina Angle TABLE OF CONTENTS INTRODUCTION ............. 2 DEDICATION .............. 14 SENIORS.................. 16 FACULTY AND STAFF ....... 34 UNDERCLASSMEN ........... 48 STUDENT LIFE ............ 68 SPORTS .................. 86 CLUBS ACTIVITIES ....... 120 SENIOR DIRECTORY ....... 152 MEMORIUM ............... 164 ADVERTISEMENTS ......... 166 A person who is there for your good times and bad times and pro- vides the emotional support I need through these trying high school years ” A person who truly cares and un- derstands your deepest problems and your worst attributes ' ... Trustworthy, compatible, and dependable. -Hope Vaughn One that is always there for you. 3 What did you do during your one hour break during summer camp? ' Ate, drank sodas, socialized, lis- tened to music, and caught up on things that happened this summer.” Do you feel summer camp pre pared you for the fall season better than if you had not attended? Yes, it was well worth the effort.' Phyllis Gant 4 Camp Crackdown - Season Shape-Up “Do it again . . . and do it right this time!” This familiar shout could be heard from one end of the practice field to the other during summer camps held during the last two weeks of Au- gust. Coaches, directors, and student leaders demonstrated technique and corrected errors while players listened attentively. Yes, it was time to get back into shape, both physically and mentally, for the fall season. No more trips to the beach, lazy days basking in the sun, or summer matinee movies. Instead, the alarm clocks started to ring and the days began bright and early. Why go through this? Simple . . . because the coaches and students feel it's necessary to have pre-season prac- tice to refresh their minds, which have been on vacation for three months! Football players performed condi- tioning drills, practiced plays, and co- ordinated team efforts during double- session practices in preparation for their first scrimmage against St. Eliza- beth's on Saturday, August 23, 1986. The band, newly under the direction of Mr. Harris, began practice at 9:00 AM and continued through until 4:00 PM in preparation for their first perfor- mance on September 12th. Student leaders also organized practices for the cheerleaders and for the field hockey and volleyball teams. In addition to the students attending summer camps, there were other young adults around giving their time to clean up the school. Paint brushes in hand and Mr. Riblett by their sides, these students gave MHS a fresher look. The results of such hard work helped to make our school a nicer building to be in and a more successful school in athletics and band. As far as fashion goes, the “in things were high topped sneakers left untied or shoes fastened with vel- cro bands instead of shoestrings. Col- orful shorts reaching just above the knee (commonly called jams ) were very popular, as were stirrup pants worn with a long sweater shirt. Fash- ion was more and more tending toward long, ankle-length clothing. Clothes were adopting some of the styles worn in the late 60’s. The fashionable colors were shades of blue, purple, and pink. Designer clothes seen frequently were Forenza sweaters, Coca-Cola shirts, Reebok sneakers, and good ole Levis blue jeans. Girls' hairstyles were becoming less radical. Geometric shapes and short bobs were faded out. While the male population seemed to favor a mohawk or a buzz” during football season, the females chose softer, more accentuat- ing looks such as longer versions of the bob cut or a mild perm with long hair. Some of the more popular celebri- ties included Bill Cosby, Cybill She- perd, and Don Johnson. In the world of music, Peter Cetera, Madonna, and Van Halen were often in the limelight. Pop music tended to be remakes or remixes of past tunes such as the New Edition's Earth Angel and Run DMC’s Walk This Way. Well- watched movies were “Top Gun, “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, and The Fly”. Each day at MHS brought a new variation on many fads and fashions. People tended to wear whatever they felt was appropriate for each particu- lar occasion. They even developed their own fads—ones which can be termed Classic Cavalier fads and fashions. Fads that are in: Cropped pants Paisley prints Over sized shirts 6 What advice can you give the un- derclassmen that could make high school easier? Give school your all. Do your school work, and it will be a breeze Don’t complain or it will get worse. ’ 8 “Middletown, Delaware” “(Where’s Delaware?)” Where: 504 South Broad Street When: September 4, 1986—June 12, 1987 What: Middletown High School took part in an exciting year of education, sports, trips, other school-related ac- tivities, new relationships, preparation for the future, experiences with pain, happiness, loss, and love, and more. Who: 563 students, 69 teachers and staff, and the Middletown community. Why: It was the state law that stu- dents be reauired to attend 180 days of school and teachers attend 185 days of school. At MHS, those days were filled with daily classes, enrichment programs and extracurricular activi- ties. This was the place where adult- hood became more of a reality. From the first day of high school until gradu- ation, it was only four short years of acquiring all the necessary knowledge for functioning independently in soci- ety. School was more than cramming for that last test. Rather, it was the beginning of a new world where more responsiblities were placed on stu- dents—responsibilities which required rational thinking and problem solving abilities. At MHS, the students and teachers worked hard to become more aware of all their capabilities as indi- viduals having much to contribute to the community. This educational pro- gram was rigorous at times, but the Classic Cavaliers possessed the initia- tive to seek their full potential. Do all your classwork and home work and study hard, but most of all. listen to your teachers because they care.” Be your own person, and don't worry about what everyone else says and does. Get involved so that you make more friends and have more fun. Go with the flow. 9 I________________The Making Of A Senior A senior already! It’s only been 12 years!” It has been twelve years now that the Class of 1987 spent in preparation for June 8. 1987. It has not been all work and no play, though. A host of memories, from getting driver's li- censes, suffering through “freshman initiation day,” and getting that first date, back even to being able to have two recesses in one day, bringing things in for “show and tell, and all the other activities in which we had taken part since kindergarten were still vivid. As eighth graders on our way over to MHS, we could only imag- ine someday becoming seniors. For four years, teachers reminded us that in order to become seniors, we had to pass their classes. Before becoming seniors, the Class of '87 had to suc- cessfully put on a Junior-Senior Prom. Finally, on September 4, 1986, the Class of 1987 walked through the front doors as the Senior Class. With senior portraits over, it seemed that nothing could stop us. However, the year wasn't over yet. Being seniors still in- volved some responsibilities which had to be successfully carried out. First, we each had to accumulate at least the minimum number of credits and have a 70% or better average in all required courses, remembering to make sure that we had passed all of the state competencies. Caps and gowns had to be ordered. The class trip in the spring had to be taken, but we couldn't forget that as seniors, we were the students the underclassmen looked up to as role models. It was not so long ago that we too were under- classmen admiring the seniors from past years. Finally it was our time to show off what we had learned as CLASSIC CAVALIERS, and to begin our new life as young adults out in the real world. Once you are gone, what will you “Fun, laughter, pep rallies, and 'The people and what fun I had. • The relationships I have with the miss most about MHS? everything. teachers, the friends I will leave be hind and the memories that will al- ways be In my mind. Kelly Green 10 “We’ve got spirit, how ’bout you?” Middletown High School possesses one characteristic that is especially ap parent to anyone just passing by. What is it? Well, it all starts with that Classic Cavalier Spirit. Pep rallies at MHS unleash the enthusiasm which had been building all week long. An outsider, seeing students walking around with paint (blue and white, of course) smeared from their necks up to the roots of their hair, cannot help but realize how dedicated MHS stu- dents are to demonstrating their pride. Perhaps the most memorable event at MHS is spirit week. This is when the students compete to show everyone who's got what it takes to be the most spirited. The winner is presented with a plaque at the Homecoming game. However, winning the coveted spirit stick is the true aim of each class. The winner is determined during the Home- coming pep rally after each class is given a chance to shout the specific cheer: Two bits, four bits, six bits, a dollar. All for the Cavaliers, stand up and holler!” The loudest class wins the spirit stick. At MHS, every day proves to be a memorable one. In Classic Cavalier Country, smiles have feeling in them and reassuring glances are there for the asking! The spirit of MHS is built on a foundation of trust and friend- ship. One look and you will see that the best are found at CLASSIC MHS. School spirit is very important to keep the school alive. The spirit makes the heartbeat of school in everybody ' Sherry Bowser “If there wasn't any spirit, nothing would be a success ... there would be nothing to look forward to. -Norma Brown Without school spirit and pride people wouldn't care, and caring and an extra effort is what makes MHS special. ' “Students will be more enthusiastic about learning at a school that has great school spirit.” 13 “ . . . And you have a nice day today.” Each year the Cavalier Yearbook Staff selects a faculty or staff member whom we feel deserves special recog- nition. This person is one who demon- strates outstanding effort in his or her field of work. Also, he possesses quali- ties such as charisma, willingness to go one extra step beyond the call of duty, and an easy but productive working relationship with peers and students. It is with great pleasure, then, that the 1987 Yearbook Staff an- nounces that this 1987 Cavalier is ded- icated to Mr. Michael Handlin. Mr. Handlin is married and is the father of four children. He began teach- ing here at Middletown High School in September of 1977. Mr. Handlin is to be commended for his exemplary ef- fort in all his various responsibilities and jobs around this school. He teach- es horticulture in the Vocational De- partment, where he recently directed the building of our new greenhouse. When not busying himself with the greenhouse, Mr. Handlin can be found in the auditorium directing the Stage Crew. He also coordinates the lighting and sound effects for assemblies, con- certs and plays, and during the foot- ball season Mr. Handlin announces the games from his perch up in the press box. In June, Mr. Handlin is in charge of setting up for the graduation ceremo- nies. His unenviable task is to prepare for an outside commencement, while also setting up for an inside com- mencement in the event of rain. Dur- ing the summer, he oversees the par- ticipation of several teams of FFA members in the Harrington Fair as well as helping to coordinate the MHS sum mer ag. co-op program. Pleasant, easy going, and caring, Mr. Handlin successfully balances an active school schedule and a happy family life. Mr. Handlin is a CLASSIC example of a dedicated teacher devot- ed to giving his all for the benefit of the school. 14 THANK YOG! As a member of the Yearbook Staff for 4 years, I have had the opportunity to observe the growth of the Cavalier both technically and financially. It is with the utmost pride that I have helped in the production of the past 4 books, which together have cost more than $50,000 to produce. I have overseen the develop- ment of our advertising section and have been gratified by the continuing support from our community. I would like to thank our advertisers for their contributions. You helped make our 32-page color section, which itself costs over $2,500 each year, a reality. I would also like to extend my appreciation to the faculty, adminis- tration, and staff for their enduring cooperation. Through portraits, club pictures, and various other interuptions, you continued to be among our most avid supporters. As editor in chief of the yearbook, I feel it is my duty to record for you in pictures and words what Middletown High School is, and its importance in the community. I hope you enjoy this year's Classic Cavalier as much as I have enjoyed working with my staff and the students here at MHS. I will always remember my days here, and I hope the Cavalier will help you to recall your Classic Cavalier” days in the years to come. Sincerely, Suzanne K. DuRoss 1986-87 Editor In Chief Now and forever- Classic Cavalier memories While we were here at Middletown High School, the class of '87 went through many classic moments. We made it through our fresh- man year with much enthusiasm. In our soph- more year, we got our licenses and would say, “Hey, we’re half way there!” Our junior year involved SAT’s, our Junior Prom, and the thoughts of “Where do I want to go to college?” Now, here we are: it's our SENIOR YEAR!!! We have gained friendships that will be cherished forever, a good education that will last us a lifetime, and some very special moments. Let these classic moments never be forgotten, and may good luck be with us forever in our futures. • V Vikki Abbott Cheryl Alford Marina Angle Mary Ann Argoe Dane Austin Tammy Bailey Joseph Beacher Katherine Bond Sherry Bowser Harold Brackin Troy Bratcher Most Attractive Most Athletic Suzanne DuRoss Jamie Evans Jack Webb Roman Lewis I Best Most Dressed Talented Roman Lewis, Chrissie Chesser. This was a familiar statement made by par- ents, relatives, and other friends. It truly has been a great year for the class of '87. As a class, we finally came together in a special unison. What did we do? Hey, we won spirit week, and for the first time in all of our four years at Middletown High School, we won the spirit stick, and it was at the pep rally for our home- coming at that. We were so excited that we all rushed to the center of the gym. Fortunately the president of our class, Lisa Gravatt, was not hurt too badly. When the freshmen arrived these staff members were very im- portant to the students. They as- sisted in everything from schedul- ing classes to helping decide on your future. Every student is ex- posed at one time or another to the guidance office and the many jobs involved in guidance. The staff was always eager to talk to the students. Without these dedi- cated people, our school would lack a major and helpful part of the system. PROFESSIONAL STAFF The professional staff at Middle- town High worked hard to perform their jobs. Their duties included a va- riety of things such as caring for the sick or injuried, providing assistance in the library and monitoring in- school suspension. Each staff mem- ber contributed his or her own spe cial talent to the school. These abili- ties make the staff more accessible to the needs of the student body. They are always willing to share stu- dents' problems and give advice. The staff strives to excell and help those in need. They were there when a student needed a locker opened, a lock removed, or a spill cleaned up. The staff members smiled and showed a friendliness to- wards the students, faculty, and guests of the school. They were called upon to extend their days dur- ing extra curricular activities, like team competitions and club meet- ings. Their jobs were very important and without their eagerness to do a good job and help others, Middletown High School would not be the same. Claudett Ringgold Calvin Suggs Clara Summers Custodian Chief Custodian Night Custodian The faculty at Middletown High School deserves our deepest appreci- ation for their outstanding character and enthusiaism towards the stu- dents and our school. Their under- standing and encouragement made our school days more enjoyable. They went out of their way to help us grasp the finer points of lessons. The faculty used their individual teaching styles to enhance the students' de sire to learn. The faculty challenged the students to better themselves and use the available resources. Their dedication to the student body has brought more spirit and unity into our lives and school. FACULTY 42 Ronald Bice Emily Carpenter Robert Covelli Thomas Currey Mech. Drawing. But now the girls are making the first move by asking the guys out. Some girls at MHS say it is because guys are just too shy to do the asking; therefore girls think they should. Most guys are flattered when asked out by a girl, but others are embarrassed and offended because they feel it's not morally right for a girl to make such advances. Both points of view are shared by both girls and guys at MHS . . . St. Clair. Michelle Sartin. Dawn Scott. Larry Semon. Jennifer Sharpe. Lorrie Sheats. David Shields. Stacey Shipley. Robin Shoun. Dur- ing this week the Homecoming Game, Parade, and Dance occur! This year proved to be even better than the last with the Class of '87 trying to win Spirit Week. This year's schedule was: Monday - Dress Down Day; Tuesday • Hat Sock Day; Wednesday - Hawaiian Day; Thursday • Punk Day; Friday Blue and White Day. We thank everyone 70 I Many people were involved in the floats this year such as Beaver Cleav- er, Cheerleaders, FFA and all the classes. We congratulate, the Se- niors for winning first place and ev- eryone else for doing such a great job on their float. We wish you good luck with your floats next year. Parade And Floats 72 Homecoming Queen And Court This is one of the most important events of the school year, especially for those underclassmen chosen to be attendants and those seniors who have the chance to be elected Homecoming Queen. The ceremony on the field was beautifully done, and the homecoming dance was really great. Many came and enjoyed the festivities of the evening. It was a grand night for the queen, the attendants and their escorts, and all of those others who participat- ed in and watched the evening's events. I------------------------------------------------- Freshmen Tiara Gillis escorted by Leroy Miller Ginger Gardner escorted by Eddie Lasko Sophomores Christine Saylor escorted by Todd Taylor Donna Malandruccolo escorted by Mark Cooling Halloween When we were young, we thought that after a certain age we were too old for this time of the year because you couldn't go trick or treating anymore. But when you finally reach your teenage years you realize that even without the candy you can enjoy it. Now at MHS no matter what your age, Halloween is fun! At MHS this year we had a variety of cos- tumes. The funniest part was trying to find the most unusual, but exciting costume. It goes to show - you're never to old to get into Halloween. I------------------------------------------------------ 76 This event is hard but fun. The night turned out to be a fun-filled evening. The crowd observed how the riders had to coerce the stubborn donkeys to move. The donkeys were so stubborn, in some cases, they even needed to be bribed. There were a few other difficulties such as falling off the donkey or not being able to get on. It was not only a fun event, but all who attended were treated to a great laugh. I------------------------------------------------ It's easy to get tired of the same old thing, so it is refreshing when there are some new things to do. For example, two new courses at MHS are flower arranging and pet shop management, which add another di- mension to the courses offered. So far, the students have been quite pleased with the new courses and are looking forward to next year's course selection. J 80 Getting Attention There are many different ways of getting attention. Some are more ex- travagant than others. For instance the way people do their hair, the clothes they wear, their actions and the things they say are all ways of getting attention. They have found a few ways in our school to get atten- tion and some were caught by the camera. 82 There are many different but spe- cial smiles and every smile has a dif- ferent reason or mood behind it. Just by looking at a person, one can guess what kind of mood the smiler is in. There are several pictures below, see if you can guess what they are thinking. 84 L { Cavalier SPOR TS Editor: Jfaxrx Varsity Football - pg-88 J.V. Again! The Cavaliers kept their winning streak go- ing by defeating Smyrna by a score of 20 to 14 in this year’s Harvest Bowl. The Harvest Bowl began in 1985 as a way of showing the friendly rivalry between Mid- dletown High School and Smyrna High School. It all started when the superinten- dents of the two districts got together and decided to have a game each year between the two football teams and to buy a trophy which would be awarded to the winner each year. The Cavaliers have now won this event both years. Middletown held a pep rally before the game so that the team and students were psyched for the game. The spectators helped a lot by cheering our team to victory. It was an excellent game. Is Determined And Competitive Underclassmen Prepare For The Future The Middletown High School's 1986-87 Junior Varsity Football team had a very competitive season this year. The team consisted of fresh- men and sophomores mostly, but also had a few juniors on it. They faired quite well with some very tough teams. They have come a very long way since their first practice. They have gained many new skills throughout the season. The team will prove to be really beneficial next year to both the varsity and junior varsity teams. When asked how the football team improved over the season, Coach Lawson said, “Overall the team im- proved a great deal from the begin- ning of the season to the end, both in terms of football fundamentals as well as individual discipline. The Cavaliers started out in the begining of the year short of the eleven people needed to have a team, but the enthusiastic team members recruited other students to join up. They had to compete with band prac- tice, which took away half of the team, and dealt with injuries of all kinds. Two of the captains and the only two seniors on the team, Jamie Evans and Tammy Bailey, had many knee problems. The other cap- tain was Nikki Cox. This year's team has come a long way. The team is mostly made up of sopho- mores and freshmen. The team's two goals this year were scored by sophomore Jack- ie Guessford and freshman Tiara Gillis. Volleyball takes a great deal of endur- ance and determination. The team showed very much improvement due to their good attitude and hard work. The girls possessed a great deal of character and a competitive attitude. Without a lot of support, the team is still a very confident one. The team consisted of one freshman, four sophomores, three juniors and four seniors. 1986-87 Boys Varsity Basketball Team Kneeling, left to right: Roman Lewis, Reggie Young Standing, left to right: Coach Williams, Scott Carter, Man- ager Joanne Burger, Dickie Black- ston, Frank Chandler, Jerome Harris, Troy Bratcher, Richard Atley, Assis- tant Coach Lawson 106 1986-87 Boys Basketball Team When it comes down to enthusi- asm, drive and competitiveness, the Cavaliers never fell short. The season was extremely rewarding in that the team showed a unique ability to deal with adversity. The highlight of the year was the come back against Claymont. Although the Cavaliers didn't win the game, they showed the exuberance that it takes to be suc- cessful. The Cavaliers' ability to come back from various deficits is remarkable. When asked how the season had gone, Coach Williams said, Working with all the players has been very rewarding ... we look forward to a lot of success in the future. The most valuable player for this season was Roman Lewis. 1986-87 Boys J.V. The valuable experience gained last year was an asset to this year's team in improving their technique. With great determination, the players worked very hard throughout the season. Under the leadership of a new coach, Mr. Neubauer, the team was complimented numerous times about their level of play being greatly improved. The teams leading scorer was Junior, Joanna Smith, with Se- niors Lisa Gravatt, Tiny Pinkard, Beth Sikma and Kristen Vaughan taking turns at contributing points, rebounds and assists throughout the season. 1986-87 Wrestling Team First row. left to right: George Deck er, Sheldon Cale, Jerry Nash Second row. left to right: Amy Cochran, Paul Rogers, Bruce Wissinger, Tony Delle- Donne, Erik Reynolds, Manager Mi- chelle St. Clair Third row, left to right:Coach Davis, Tom Ross, Jason Myers, Ed Manlove, Ray St. Clair, Rich Brower, Derek Brady, Harry Nash, Tom DelleDonnie, Assistant Coach Davis 116 The 1986-87 Wrestling Team STUDENT SERVICES First row. left to right: Cher Olson. And Testament IN MEMORIUM James Martin Webb, Jr., nicknamed Web- bie, was a unique individual who will always hold a special place in the hearts of his friends and family. James had ambition, loved going to school, enjoyed learning new concepts, and he especially enjoyed being around all his friends. More importantly, James' friends liked being around him! James was an optimist, always there with words of advice or comfort. James had many hobbies including hunting, collecting stickers and hats, and drawing. However, James will be most remembered for his smile that brightened the lives of all those around him. 164 A dedicated cafeteria worker for over thirteen years, Ella Mae Suggs was one of those people who always got involved. Her co workers considered Ella Mae to be the sweetest thing . . . she got along with everybody. Her witty sense of humor and willingness to work with others gained the respect of her peers and won the hearts of many students here at MHS. We admired Ella Mae's emotional strength. Even dur- ing her times of illness, Ella Mae continued to be a friend to those around her. A friend is someone to share one's triumphs and defeats with, and to rely on during difficult periods. Ella Mae was such a person. 165 Middletown Businesses Shopping Center ■ Townsend Odessa School Organizations ■ Area Businesses - Banks • Special Friends - Patrons - Acknowledgements - Colophon ■ pg. 168 pg. 177 pg. 178 pg. 180 pg. 190 pg. 194 pg. 196 pg. 204 pg. 204 pg. 204 j MIDDLETOWN BUSINESSES To The Seniors Of The Class Of '87 Congratulations CALOTEX DELAWARE, C Home Improvements Lumber Petroleum Products Phone - 378-9568 From 6 17 Wood St Middletown, De. Tracy and Lois; Brian John meet me on the rainy streets of D.C.; everybody seems to be taking MDE as independent study: Phyllis oversees the long climb to financial stability: MDE I meets the Sales Demonstration and the Free Enter- prise game, and survives! What is the mind? Psychology students learn not to underesti- mate my quizzes: Quiz 3.2 gets graded . . . eventually. Are you Identity Achieved, or just in Foreclosure? Dangermouse?!? Honors Seminar survives its changes. That's an excellent ques- tion—now what's the answer? Goal Sheet panic yields to unstruc- tured study, but Garreau will never be forgotten. What exactly does integral mean? George meets the FLQ and a barrage of snowballs; Pam turns quick-change artist; Sharlyn Ellen provide a rallye to remember. Exemptions? What exemptions? We take a big leap in design sophistication; the Cavalier staff waits for the other shoe to drop, and it does, in the form of ink spots. A. Andersen, and missing pictures; why does it seem that no one is able to sell any ads until February?
