,WiMlctoirn V Hi h «a ' d This page, clockwise: I feel like hibernating. I'm not as stupid as you look. See, I use Crest toothpaste! Opposite psge. clockwise: How do I love thee? Let me count the ways. Run that by me one more time. 2 GLIMPSES OF A THINKING CAPS AT WORK 6 During a typical school day, a student spends close to five hours sitting in classrooms studying aca- demic and elective subjects. Be- sides break and lunch time, assem- blies and pep rallies provide the few interruptions from the normal routine. Strong working relation- ships develop between students and administrators, enabling us to learn to rely on others from time to time. 4 r SCHOOL DAY This psge. clockwise: Are you serious? When I want your opinion. I'll give it to you. How much longer? Opposite psge. clockwise: Yes, I know what I’m talking about! I feel like crying. Who died and left you boss? AT A GLANCE - TOGETHER AS ONE WHAT IS A SCHOOL? 6 A school is not just a building where students go to learn and teachers go to instruct. Rather, a school is a meeting place where stu- dents and teachers gather together in order to get ready for their fu- ture. The PEOPLE are responsible for making Middletown High what it is today. Through understanding, cooperation, and dedication, we’ve made Middletown High school a school of which we can be proud. 7 8 VISIONS OF THE MHS BUSTIN’ LOOSE The amount of school spirit at Middletown High is so great that someone could become a million- aire if they bottled it and sold it. Pride is our middle name, and dis- playing it is our game! Beware on the day of a pep rally! Anyone with- in a ten mile radius of the school would go deaf listening to the cheers of loyalty from the MHS stu- dents. Faithfully, we stand by MHS 100%. SPIRIT AND PRIDE 9 SEE HOW A SMILE 10 BRIGHTENS THE DAY FLASH THOSE PEARLIES Everyone has had those days when he feels like just staying in bed and letting the world go by without him. Just a little smile of reassurance from a friend can mean all the difference between a great day or a not-so-good day. A smile shows a person that someone really cares, or it may mean, “Hey, I like you just the way you are!” At MHS, smiles help make everyone’s day. 11 A LOOK INSIDE: 12 A SMALL WONDER How many schools which have less than 600 students still earn a respectable reputation in the state? We do. We have accelerated class- es, enriching agriculture courses, tough sports teams, as well as top notch elective studies in foreign lan- guage and music. Take a look be- hind the scenes, A LOOK INSIDE, and see how MHS is a small wonder. THE VIEW FROM HERE 13 FRIENDLY IMAGES Inside Middletown High school there are 594 students, 40 teach- ers, and 37 administrators and staff members who all work together to provide a well-balanced education. Thanks to all who have shown support and encouragement on our behalf. Suzanne K. DuRoss 1985-86 Editor-In-Chief MRS. CAROLYN KUGEL DEDICATION 6 The 1985-86 yearbook staff ded- icates this year’s edition of the Cav- alier to Mrs. Carolyn Kugel in hon- or of her degree of devotion demonstrated toward her col- leagues as well as her students. Her willingness to go above and beyond the call of duty to aid someone shows that she truly cares about the welfare of her friends. We Love You, Mrs. Kugel! SENIORS 6 Looking back to our freshman year, the class of '86 always seemed to show the undiminished pride which helped us to win this year’s pep rallies. Our sophomore year meant getting our licenses; our junior year had our prom and our domination of Spirit Week. Now we are in our senior year with gradua- tion, senior trip, the prom and the great magnitude of spirit we will always possess. I decided to ask the Class of '87 to vote on whom they felt would be the Most Unforgetable Senior They decided that they were Eric Cole and Sherry Sharpe I felt that this category would hold some sentiment for the Seniors chosen, and would, of course, for our class as well. T Of all the many people who have helped us reach our goals since freshman year there is one very special lady who stands out — Mrs Linda Kane. Mrs. Kane has been our advisor since our freshman year She has stuck with us through the good times and the bad Mrs. Kane has helped us with and participated in fund raisers, the float committees, the prom committee, our class trip and, finally, gradu- ation. She has helped us keep our heads up high when the going got tough, and she has truly put the spirit in our class! When we leave here in June we will leave behind a very special friend. Mrs Kane - we love you. and we will miss you!!! The Class of '86 FACULTY The administration, faculty and staff of Middletown High School deserve our thanks and appreciation. The juniors, soph- omores and freshmen all contribute to what makes MHS special. One look tells all. Juniors, sophomores, and freshmen combine to make MHS the special place it is. They add laughter, smiles and happiness to the otherwise still and empty hallways. They are a large part of the good things that go on inside M.H.S. Spirit Week con- sisted of Hat and Sock Day, Dress Down Day, Punk Day, Opposite Gen- der Day, and Blue and White Day. The week ended in the traditional Home- coming Pep Rally, and once again the Class of ’86 walked away with both the Spirit Stick and Spirit Week Plaque. Private Thoughts . . . . M.H.S. ACTIVITIES Activities Students at MHS participate in many dif- ferent activities such as pep rallies, sports events, and Homecoming. But what about the other activities that are just as impor- tant, but don’t receive enough recognition? Students as well as teachers collaborate in activities such as building school projects, the WNRK radio program, and SADD. Spe- cial work was put into the re-creation of the Civil War display that was held in the begin- ning of the year, and much effort was put forth when Mr. Handlin's classes built a new greenhouse. All of this hard work just goes to show how much pride we all have in MHS! M.H.S. 84 n ssnoquaajQ MHS IS A PLACE OF MANY MOODS 6 When we look back at our high school years, we remember all of the special times we had. But most of all, we remember the laughter and tears shared with our friends. The times we spent goofing off in class or daydreaming about the future reflected our memories of fun and excitement After all the joking around, we all showed a more serious side, mainly concerned with passing classes and being the best we could be Our moods were constantly changing, due to the experience we encountered through the years All these special moments will be cap tured in our hearts, and we will always be able to recall the good ’ole high school days! OF MANY MOODS Togetherness At M.H.S. . . . TOGETHERNESS AT M.H.S. Friendship and unity at MHS are very important factors in surviving our years at school. Even when we were as young as five years old, when we were just starting kinder- garten. we've had our friends to help, guide, and love us through thirteen years of school. Most of us realized that we couldn’t make it through the rough times without our friends The great memories we have of our school years were made possible by our friends and the times we shared with them . . An Important Factor Looking at all the Sports here at M.H.S., one would see the pride, spirit, and the dedi- cation, that both players and coaches have for their sport and their school. Sports play an important role at Middletown High School. There is extreme emphasize on learning, togetherness, and sportsmanship. In these pages you will begin to take A Look Inside of the proud home of the Mid- dletown Cavaliers. GIRLS’ FIELD HOCKEY 6 The 1985 Cavalier Hockey Team went through a season of endless drills, sweat, and laps under new coach Mrs. Keating. The team not only improved last year’s record, but also learned many new skills. These skills enabled them to improve the game. We wish next year’s Hockey Team great success and good luck for a bet- ter season. The 1985 Field Hockey Team: Bottom row, loft to right:Co-Capt. GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL 6 For the first time in 4 years, M.H.S. has established a Girls’ Volleyball Team. This young team faired quite well with some very tough competition. This team faced some of the top teams in the state, and showed them their drive, determination and spirit. We wish the volleyball team much future success. ■ The 1985-86 Boys Basketball team played very well this year. After their rough season last year, they showed much im- provement. Compared to a record of 6-16, they have proven that they have the ability and opportunity to become a very strong team in competion as well as in basic skills. They have put forth much more team effort and generated vitality and enthusiam We wish the team better luck and continued success. The following « jert t F r$f Row. With a mere one- point loss to the state’s Wrestling powerhouse, the M.H.S. Wrestling team dominated each of their matches and tournaments. Along with their respectable record, some of the individual wrestlers also maintained a perfect, undefeated record. CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES 6 By definition, a club is a group of people associated for a common pur- pose or mutual advantage, usually an organization that meets regularly. This is only a definition; however, and no one really knows what these words mean until he or she actually joins a club. In this section we take a look inside the clubs and activities in which students have been participating this year at MHS.
