GAA. Girls' Athletic Association's main objective is the promotion and support of girls' sports. Among the many home games the club hosted, the District III field hockey tournament stands out as one of the main events of the year. The funds raised by the G.A.A. were used to order new warm-ups and uniforms for next year. Here are a few highlights from a successful second year, a championship field hockey team, a second place in the Gymnastics State meet for Laurel Spencer, a 7-2 basketball record and three track statersg Gloria Galvin, Mary Early, and high jump state champion Diana Pero. ' The football team of 1973 was truly a group of outstanding athletes. It is very difficult to mention all their merits in just a few words. The season had just begun when tragedy struck us all, with the loss of two former students, Mike and Taunja Sloviaczek. Mike was one of our outstanding football players of 1972, hero of our championship victory over Homedale. We never had a chance to recover from our first loss, when we were struck again with the loss of Charlene Fountain, the Aunt of several of our athletes and students. The final blow was the loss of our Head Football Coach Gary Comstock. The season was just half over when all these tragedies struck, not only the school and the community, but the entire state. The emotional pain and agony that these athletes had to endure, and still try to function as a football team, was a tre- mendous challenge to them. The pain and agony will always be part of us, but this football team kept their heads up and fiuictioned as a unit. A lesser group of athletes would never have been able to come back under these circumstances, the way they did. The love and respect the players and the coaching staff had for our lost ones led us through the last four weeks of the football season, and on to our victory in the State A-3 play offs. g rj , ,.
