TH E PRINCIPAL' MESSAGE The Middletonian staff worked earnestly to record this history of the 1960-61 school year. We hope that information may be gained which will better acquaint one with the activities of our school and show how we worked towards reali- zation of aims and objectives. We consider this our family album and we treasure and cherish it be- cause it represents the true spirit of the school andis a reflection of the community. On its pages are recorded the pictures, events and activities, of people who have made this book possible. A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. Each line in this story is but a segment of what we have done in the past year as members of the Middleton family. As the years pass by as we sit to reminisce and look back over our past experiences, our memory will come to life as we turn the pages. May we recall our days of innocence, sweetness and all that is beautiful, because it was a life of youth, energy, happiness , and friendship, l .JY f . MRs.F.J. ANDERSON MR. A.s I sat there thinking, I thought of all my high school days at Middleton High School. It seemed only yesterday that 325 students enrolled in the 1958 sophomore class . I remember how full of excitement and suspense we were at the thought of being enrolled in a high school. To our amazement, we finished the first three or four weeks with flying colors. The seniors and juniors quickly accepted us and treated us as if we were their little sisters or brothers. After those weeks, we settled down for a year of studying and pleasure. We quickly became quite popular with our older schoolmates. In that year, Barbara Gilbert, a petite but comely, young lass, won the title of sophomore attendant to Miss Middleton. During the football season, Arthur Fagan, Robert Douglas, and Wesley Gadson were among the members of the traveling football team. Others that were not athletically in- clined, or participated in the band, drill team, or pep squad cheered our team to victory. Although we had fun during our first year at MHS, we strove for and maintained high scholastic averages ...., at least some of us did. As I can re- member, that year surely did pass rather fast, I guess the passing seemed rapid because it was our first year at a senior high school. When September came after a seemingly brief summer vacation, I remember how good it felt to be back within the walls of our school to talk to all of our old friends, since we hadn't seen each other since June. The best feeling came when we thought of the power that we now manifested over the new sophomores. Our most competent class president, Ruby Thompson, led our class to success. Many of our students were enrolled in a foreign language class for the first time. For the first two or three weeks, all one could hear from these students was '1C01'l'l0 S6113-ITI3-? DUTiT1glZ11e homecoming festivities, Ruby Thompsonwas elected as junior attendant to Miss Middleton. From the mid-term to the end of the year, we took tests, tests, and more tests . We took many standardized tests to see how we rated with other students in the nation. On one of the tests fnamely, the CIEP test, Johnny Lovett excelled and accepted an early entrance scholarship to Fisk University. A.s I think, I remember so clearly how all the students Qjuniorsl who had done exceptional work and had maintained high averages during the year- were looking forward to being inducted into the National Honor Society. At the end of the year, twenty juniors were inducted. Those students were Arthur Barb, Carolyn Hall, Charles Myers, Velma Charles, Joy Lawe, Alma Shelton, Evelyn Roberts, Arthenia Joyner, Curtistine May, Carolyn Lee, Barbara Gilbert, Arthur Wilson, Douglass Knox, Robert Douglas, Juanita Adams, Ruby Thompson, Loretta Holland, Johnnye Davis, Alma McNair, and Betty Twiggs. During the same time, all of us were counting the days and making plans for our first high school prom. The gymnasium was beautifully decorated with colorful articles to carry the theme Stairway to the Stars to a fitting conclusion. -..MA AL. ,, .,.........A - L- f ..-.-Af.. , .-4..- .. - ft- 4-1-11- X p , ff-frm. .,.,.,r As dignified seniors, we returned to school in l96l to complete our education and reign over the entire school as the superlatives in our areas. Charles Myers, a very aggressive, young lad, was elected by the student body to serve as presi- dent of the Student Council. With the alpha and the omega of the athletic season, We learned that Carris Aikens, Wesley Gadson, Robert Douglas, Ralph Rance, Charles Hadley, Jerry Swann, and Everett Curry had played exceptionally well in their respective sport or sports. Assuming the responsibility and the honors of being Miss Middleton was the curvaceous and attractive Joyce Lee. Arthur Barb was elected as president of the National Honor Society. Participating in the annual American Legion Oratorical contest was the talented Jacquelyn Scrivens. Leader of the senior class was the versatile Charles Thomas. I can see 208 students cross the threshold of their high school education and begin to lead another life--a life of responsibility and promise. As we graduate, dear old Middleton, We leave you and our friends behind, but we will never forget your teachings, nor the courage you have instilled in us. We will always let your teachings steer us and lead us toward our ambitions in the coming years. 'NVQ-. FAREWELL DEAR MI DDLETON Farewell to you, Dear Middleton Your walls have sheltered us, And through the years that we've been here, Your words we've come' to trust. We leave you now in body, but Our minds will always be, Remembering the things you've done, The ways you've made us see. The right from wrong you've taught us, The faith within our heart, Will never be forgotten, However far we part. Your words we'll always cherish Though we be far or near, Through time and through the ages, Your words will still be there. When we came here in '58 Your arms were opened wide, And with them were your ethics, By which we did abide. We leave you now in '61 Refined young citizens, To serve the world with what we know, And what your teaching has done. Supreme within our minds you reign, A monument you stand Your lessons we shall carry far, Across the wide, wide land. To thee Dear Alma Mater, hail, Tho it pains our heart to say farewell, We'll strive for thy sake and prevail Not just to equal, but to excel. FAREWELL! X M M By Ruby Lee Thompson :ig Nl MIA E 1 X ..-2 --T. -- gs .--- W1 I e 1 1 I 4 3 1 .LJ E ICR CLASS PRQPHECY The Difference A Decade Makes It is the year 1971, and I am Ruby L. Thompson, anesthesiologist at the city hospital, Los Angeles, California. Here I relate my visit back to my old home- town, Tampa, Florida. Naturally my first visit was to my Alma Mater, dear old Middleton I-Iigh School. As I entered the familiar portals, who should greet me with outstretched hands but Betty Twiggs? It was no surprise, for I knew tha1 Betty had wanted to be a principal all her life. Venturing into the office, I found that Principal Twiggs had as her secretaries, two of my former classmates, Miss Annie Devance and Miss Barbara Sutton. Exploring still further, I found, to my astonishment, Ralph Rance, former high school basketball star teaching history. Booker T. Lundy, served in the same capacity as Ralph, I learned, but at different schools. Suddenly I heard the loud clatter of typewriters, and a voice saying, Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their country. This voice came from Joyce Boronell, who was drilling her students in typing. After con- versing for a short time, Harriet McKennon approached. I then learned that she was on the faculty and was teaching mathematics. I was attracted by faint sounds of music from the auditorium and being curious I found that Rosa Edwards was voice instructor, and had been for over five years . On my way out, I happened to pass the library and saw Sylvia Larry, an old chum, explaining the Dewey Decimal System. Chatting with her for a few moments gave me a chance to see Laura McKeever, homemaking instructor go by. After this partial reunion, I proceeded to my car, when to my dismay, I found that some- thing was wrong with it. Calling a repair shop, I found that Unice King, owner of the repair shop, had a very prosperous business. After a few minor repairs, Unice offered to show me around the city and to take me to dinner. While waiting for time to pass, I decided, Cas Women will do, that I needed a hair-do. I located a gorgeous and fabulously decorated shop. The owner, Veda Gibbons, was married and had a fine daughter. Barbara Blue, one of the beauticians in the shop began to give me a lovely hair style then the dryer went off. This time, Menifee White prominent electrician entered the shop and repaired the dryer in record time. After leaving the shop, I started for my date. On my way, I collided with someone whose arms were filled with papers and books . I then recognized her as Joy Lawe, now a leading social worker with the state. Joy mentioned that Lillie Nix, Vernice Gaylord, Edna Washington, Mamie Jackson, and Martha Core were also social workers, and that Alberta Gaskins was head of the department. Alberta had married Bobby Bowden, who was a television meterologist. Joy Lawe told me that Jerome Matthews, a pilot, was in the hospital suffering from a crash. Since we were to pass the hospital on the way to the dinner, I L--I 5'-, t ,,. suggested that we visit Jerome. As we entered the hospital, Dr. Charles Myers, greeted us as he was leaving the operation room. He glanced around to Nurses Curtestine May, Josephine Hester, and Jennifer Jackson who are his able assist- ants. Just then Nurse Gwendolyn Davis appeared to escort us to Jerome's room, as we entered we found AnnetteTillman taking his pulse, and laboratory technician Charles Hadley, a former schoolmate, taking his blood count. I had been invited to lunch at the Golden Room Lounge and I didn't want to be late. I hailed a Cab, gave the necessary information and settled back to rest my weary eyes. The flashing lights startled me and behold I read Fennell Johnson Golden Room Lounge. The meal was delicious and the music divine. Vivian Jones spoke to me as I hurried from the building. I learned from her that we lived in the same neighborhood and that she had just received a copy of a book written by Dr. Mitchell A. Dasher, Jr. , a classmate and a reputable Chicago psychiatrist. Alone in my comfortable home I turned on the radio and hearda voice say Until tomorrow at this time, this is Alfonso Salters signing off. I knew it could be none other than my old friend from the Big M. The telephone rang as I relaxed and listened to the Midnight program, to my amazement, Clarence Jennings told me Alma McNair, Arthenia Joyner, Theodore Lawe, Willie Wallace and Willie F. Anderson were in town to witness a concert at Carnegie Hall by Concert pianist Carolyn Lee. I promised to see them early in the morning after my appointment with the Head Administrator of City Hospital. When I returned Home I saw a 1972 Super Cadill parked in front of my house not being curious I didn't stop to observe its occupants. Suddenly out of no- where came a familiar voice, Ruler of the Big M. I turned around astonished to face Margaret Tillman, Dorothy Minor, Edna Henderson and Emma Brooks. They told me gleefully they were in town on a months vacation and intended to see the first baseball game of the season inwhich Joseph Myrick, Everett Curry, Clarence Chester and Otis Wilson were playing. The team on which they were playing was being coached by Carris Aiken. I forgot my urgent appointment and invited them in for lunch. After we rushed to the park to' see the game. At the ticket box I saw Adam Bostic and Beatrice Williams who told me proudly they had been married for nearly five years. Bea told me that she had received letters the week before from Isaih Evans, Alma Shelton, and Alberta Macon who were in Africa on a good will tour. ' A Ip . '-W - -,iff ..... .Y W..r.....,Y Y ,,,, Vw V' I I No sooner had I closed my eyes, than the door bell rang. I aroused myself rush sleepily to answer it. Telegram for Miss Ruby Lee Thompson I opened it and to my surprise it was from .Iacquelyn Scrivens who was inviting me to joir her in Paris, France for a tour around the world. My eyes sparkled as tears ol joy rolled down my cheeks. As a daydreamer I could see mentally all that haq happened ten years before when Helen Williams, Inez Anderson, Ruby Andrews Alma McNair and others had worked tirelessly on our annual. At 10:00 A, M, 1 reported at the airport to begin the first lap of my tour of the world. Charles Thomas, NAACP accountant and representative, was also on his way to France We talked until both of us were exhausted. A familiar voice awaken me, I rubbed my eyes for certainly I was dreaming. Velma Charles, Ruby A.ndrews, Evelyr Roberts and Samuel Scott were aboard the same plane headed for Scotland and England. What a wonderful surprise to learn from them that so many ofour dreams had come true. The plane was slowly landing before I realized my journey was nearly over and I would see another of my friends. I said goodby to the others and rushed to the door of the plane. To my greatest surprise the pilot of the plane abroad was none other than Clifford Knight. Well all good things must end. Certainly, I will enjoy my tour around the world and perhaps meet many more members of the Middleton Family. Ruby Lee Thompson bt. . A L f X eff' 1 , -15 ti , .A 1 I TXT A SE IOR'S VIEW POI T We, the graduating seniors of the year 1960-1961 are proud of the fact that we have been a member of this great Middleton family for the past three years. In these years we have exemplified all the outstanding traits of seniors. We are respected by other prospectives. We have also gained self-confidence and assurance. We have learned to advance socially, mentally, physically, morally and economically. These years have given us the ability to give and follow instructions wisely. We have upheld all the policies of the school. We have learned to ex- press the qualities that are expected of the most dignified and outstand- ing citizens in any community. The great training that we have received at Middleton has enabled us to gain the power to read and be active in all activities that are sponsored by the school. During these years we have learned to know and understand the impor- tance of cooperation. We have also developed the kind of attitude that makes others learn to appreciate us. It will grieve our hearts to leave this institution, but we must go into the world and enter different walks of life. The memory of our Alma Mater will always linger in our minds because of the many wonderful days that we have spent between these walls and for the many things we have accomplished which would make anyone proud. Therefore, we shall always keep our heads uplifted, and go forth to offer our services to the world for the benefit of all mankind. A special thanks is given to the parents, principal, faculty andfriendis who have made this yearbook possible. For without their guidance and assistance this annual would not have been possible. The 1960-61 school year has been a year of happiness, struggles and prosperity. The Middleton Family has worked diligently in the preparation of this yearbook. Each individual in the Middleton Family pictured in the preceding pages has contributed exceptional individual skill toward pro- ducing this printed record. The Middletonian Staff has spearheaded the production of this annual throughhours of labOr. We, the members of the staff have centered our workin major interests of parents and guardians, who have made our stay here possible. We have sighted our course, produced efficientlyg and we have reached the goal. The members of the staff have expressed deep interest and a great desire in preparing the '61 Middletonian. They have cooperated wholeheartedly in this endeavor. This group has exem- plifieda will power representative of our dear high school. We have tried to perform competently in every effort. The students who are members of the staff have contributed their part. This is an opportune time to say thanks a million to those persons who have worked cooperatively along with the staff. The faculty's experience in yearbook production has been the nucleus of our staff's exhibition. Along with this particular task we have ke pt in mind an expression which is common but carries a great deal of influence, A necessity in being successful is efficiencyg for there is a place for everything and a thing for every place. m'm - ' wr 6 mc. coma ' om Q 1 , E I - 5' ' kg ruuusu fw7E f -.1 .H mu .L N M -.? 1,11 5.
