All of the graduates were waiting in the auditorium receiving instructions and anxiously waiting for the music to begin. Then the music started, and we were marching in, as if in a dream, to the music of Pomp and Circum- stance. Garnett Quesinberry, our class president, offered the welcome and announced the theme and then the speakers for the evening. Janet Shackelford gave the Salutatorian speech, To Strive g Garnett Quesinberry spoke on To Seek , David South spoke on To Find , and Robert Stewart gave the Valedictorian speech, Not To Yield. With the completion of the speeches Tommie Miller presented a record player to Mr. Major who accepted the gift from the senior class for the school. Awards were then presented to outstanding members ofthe senior class by Mr. Major. After the presentation of awards, we stood to sing the class song, May You Always. Finally, the big moment came and with the assistance of Dolly Wilson, our class secretary, Mr, Major presented the diplomas. As we walked from the gym that night, there were both feelings of sadness and happiness in our hearts, For we had conquered one stepping stone on our journey. This was a completion, yet at the same time it was a beginning. This was our opportunity to take another step in the direction of our life's star, if-fl 1: Q' Q. ' a dgvfk HJ. The Student Council works closely with its members to create and to promote better school spirit and to carry out the school policies. Two representatives and the president from each class make up the membership of the Student Council with its competent sponsor and principal of the school, Mr. Clarence Major. On October 16, thirteen delegates were chosen from the Student Council to represent the school at the Annual District SCA Convention held at Cople High School. The theme of this meeting was The SCA and Its Work. In February some student council members represented Middlesex High at the Forum at the John Marshall High School in Richmond. This is an open discussion where foreign exchange students in Virginia discuss America and Americans. We who went enjoyed listening to them very much. On April 3 and 4, Jerry Ward and Robert Benson attended the State SCA Convention. Jerry led a discussion group on Aims and Responsibilities of the SCA in a Small School, and Robert acted as recorder. During the year, the SCA has sponsored chapel programs, a Thanksgiving program, and a Christmas program. Through Courtesy Week in the early spring, the organization sought to make the students more conscious of good manners, and the annual Spring Festival climaxes the social activities of the year. The Student Council has proved to be a very beneficial organization and will continue to be in the years to come. Left to Right, ROW I: D. South, Boys' Athletics, E. Ruark, Finance, E.
