Keely, Mr. Major. agfaem, The Student Co -operative Association is the most important organization of the school whose members consist of the student body and the faculty. The Student Council works with the faculty to promote better school spirit, co-operation within the school, and to carry out the school policies. Two representatives from each class and each class president make up the Student Council's membership along with our competent sponsor and principal of the school, Mr. Clarence Major. On October 16, thirteen delegates were chosen from the Student Council to represent the school at the State SCA Convention held at Northumberland High School. Aubrey Hall was vice-chairman, and Shirley Powell was discussion leader from this school. The very informative theme Progress Through Unity gave us a better understanding of co -operation and school spirit within the school. This honorable organization has served our school in many ways, and we believe that it will continue to do so for many years to come. 37 SEATED, Left to Right: Doris Burton, Suzanne Northam, Emily Brown, Aubrey Hall. Nine new members were tapped and inducted into the club. Betas are willing to serve their school in any way when the occasion arises. This year the Betas sold ice cream in the cafeteria, took care of the lobby, and installed an honor roll. Members of the Beta Club strive constantly to attain the Beta Club goals which are achievement, character, and leadership. Motto: Let us lead by sewing others. Betas relax after Tapping. Christian Future Teachers' Association was organized in M.l-l.S. in 1956, for the purpose of helping those students interested in teaching by giving information, opening up new fields, and pro- viding practiced experience whenever possible. The club works to arouse the interest of others who would make fine teachers. Among the objectives this year are an assembly program, a plan to provide a helper from the Future Teachers for each member of the faculty and to assist with refreshments at the regular faculty meetings. The twenty members of the club elected Eloise Milby,Elaine Roberts, Janet Shackelford and Mrs. Bristow as delegates to the State Convention at the John Marshall Hotel in Richmond. They had great fun and brought back enthusiastically many excellent and helpful ideas. Janet and Barbara serve the teachers at Some girls explain at the board. a faculty meeting. ff '-' X pf ' . The Glee Club co-operated with the Dra- matics Club to add music in the Christmas Pageant. It served as both background music and angels. 6 Each year the Glee Club of Middlesex High School strives for betterment. Having members from the 9th grade through the 12th we have a very nice size club of about fifty-five members. During the year we sing for the pleasure of our fellow students, as well as singing fordifferent organizations around the surrounding counties, and taking a major part in our holiday programs. Ruark aol' Under a hot sun early in September a large group of Saxons turned out for football practice After a few weeks of strenuous work under Coach Davies the squad was reduced to nineteen players and Warren Milby Aubrey Hall and Mike Ailsworth were elected tri-captains. During the whole season the team was plagued with injuries- it suffered a particularly hard blow when Aubrey Hall was lost early in the season because of a broken collar bone. Mike Ails- worth took over the responsibilities of quarter- back, and Wayne Abbott moved to the fullback spot vacated by Ailsworth. Although Middlesex never made the victor's column, it was always a tough competitor with a hard-running backfield and a hard-blocking line. The shortage of manpower proved to be the principal weakness. Each member of the squad of 1957 is to be commended for hard work, excellent sportsman- ship, and school spirit. NOT PICTURED: E. Jump, Genie, Jump!! am' 2 In November interest ran high as a large number of boys vied for a place on the basketball team. Finally the team was reduced to twelve players - four returning lettermen and eight other reliable players. The 1957 -58 basketball season got under way with a hard-fought victory over King William. Throughout the season the team enjoyed other victories and also suffered some defeats. By the end of the season hard work and unquenchable effort secured for Middlesex a berth in the District Tournament. Middlesex entered in second place with a 9-6 record. In the opening game Middlesex defeated King William 42-30. This meant Middlesex would meet West Point for the district championship. After a spine-tingling, hard- fought game West Point edged Middlesex by 49-47 in what proved to be the best game of the entire season. After the game the second place trophy was presented to the team. Each member of the 1957-58 basketball squad displayed exceptionally fine sportsmanship and school spirit and endeared themselves to all Middlesex sympathizers.
