Although the strength of the team was uncertain the outlook was bright. The lackets took the field on the last day of August with high hopes for a successful season. Our first opponent this year was Wallins High. We hadn't met this team in recent years and we were unsure of its strength. Likewise, Middlesboro was unsure of its own strength, but from the opening kickoff the Yellow Iackets' power became apparent. With every back and one end scoring touchdowns the lackets won going away 41-O. The next foe the Iackets faced was Barbourville. This was a real contest for the team. Not only were the Tigers tough, but this was also our first conference game. Middlesboro met this problem by marching seventy-two yards for a touchdown and kick- the point after. A rugged defense held the spread formation of Barbourville for no gain and the lackets rolled again, holding a 13-U lead at halftime. But Barbourville was not to be denied as in the second half a fifty- three yard pass reached paydirt for the tigers. But the lackets came back to make it 19-6. Both teams scored again but the Iackets' strength proved greater and the final score was 26-12. The Iackets again went out of the con- ference as they traveled to meet the Briar lumpers from Somerset. The Jackets scored on the fourth play of the game and led 6-U. The ball changed hands many times during the game. The Iackets were having a bad night and getting some bad breaks. They couldn't reach the goal line again. The score remained 6-O until late in the last quarter. Then the lumpers, aided by a penalty, scored and kicked the point. The score read 7-6. Again the Iackets could not move the ball and they went down to defeat 7-6. The next week the Yellow Iackets journeyed to Corbin to meet Lynn Camp. This was a very important game for the lackets as was every conference game and they wanted to avenge their loss of a week ago. The lackets were hot that night and scored two quick touchdowns. But Lynn Camp surged to a touchdown and the first quarter ended 14-7. This only heartened the lacketsp they scored two more touchdowns 4, L 5 4 M Q l ' If fl 1 f A j y sl X 3 f f! . . , I N 41 L . iff? -1, i t. , . L . f f 3 ,rhry L I ? .yyy V 5. The reserves took over in the fourth and each team scored. The final score showed Iackets 49, Lyn Camp l4. The Iackets next met the No. 2 team in the state, the Corbin Redhounds. This was the game of the year for the lackets. lf they won this one they could probably take the conference crown. The lackets received the opening kickoff only to fumble deep in our own territory. Corbin was quick to take ad- vantage and tallied on their first play. The point was missed and the lackets trailed 6-U. Again the lackets failed to move the ball and again the Bedhounds were quick to take advantage of it. The score at the quarter was 12-O. For a minute it looked grim for the lackets. But the scrapping Yellow lackets staged one of the greatest comebacks ever witnessed at Bradner Stadi- um. With every regular fighting his heart out the lackets went in at the half leading 14-12. Early in the third period the brilliant Iacket defense backed the Bedhounds up to their own goal and broke through to block their punt. To the Iackets disappointment it sailed out of the end zone for a safety rather than the hoped for touchdown. The lackets led 16-l2 going in to the final period. But late in the last quarter Corbin found a re- ceiver far down field and Corbin regained rf y 5 41 fi the lead 19-16. The time was short and the lackets could not score again. This Qfame and the fight and scrape of the lackets was said by many to be the greatest ever shown at Bradner Stadium. Even in defeat the lackets held their heads high. The lackets again were to meet a con- ference foe in Knox Central. Many people thought the lackets were in for a let-down after the Corbin game. That was the way it looked as the lackets played a very poor first half and led only l3-U But the lackets came back and looked like the team they actually were. They scored five touchdowns in the second half and with the reserves playing the latter part of the game. The final was 48-O. On the following Friday another swarm of Yellow lackets came out of Williamsburg to test the lackets. With Middlesboro still very much in the conference race, this was again a very important game. The Iackets pushed a very stubborn Williamsburg de- fense goalward and led at the end of the first period 7-O. The Williamsburg team stubbornly fought back but again the lackets subdued them and the half ended with the Middlesboro lackets out front l4-O. But Williamsburg had yet to show its strength as in the third and fourth periods they shoved the lackets back and scored two touchdowns. The point after was missed and the Middlesboro lackets ended with a very canfzizzfm' 011 Page 68 Ist Row-Left to Right: Timmy Goforth, Cecil Powers, Harvey Yeary, Bill Clark, Tim Sowders, Ules Day, Tommy Stapleton, David Hatfield, Terry Gooding, Paul Braden, Charles Nagle, Clyde Mason. 2nd Row-lirnmy Gooding, Stacy Smith, Fred Ditty, Richard Hover, Ronnie Adkins, Iohn Eddie Goin, Houston Ball, Darris Harrell, Billy Dean, lohn Conner, David Cawood. 3rd Row-Lawrence Iackson, Alva Day, Lyle Mace, Dennis Guthrie, Kenneth Lockridge, lim Massengill, Walt Taylor, Larry Lyons, Billy Ioe Meeks, Doyle Milligan, lames Harville, Bobby Buckner. 53 S 3? 1 if 1 W I A Bobby Barton, Frank White, Harvey Yeary, Tommy burgey, David Hatfield, Larry McKinney, Charles Spur- Stapleton, Bill Clark, Don Denny, Paul Braden, Ronnie lock, Doug Mayes, David Campbell. Middlesboro met defeat at the hands of Barbourville in their first game, 65-57.' Next a powerful Lone lack five journeyed to Middlesboro and again the Iaclcets met defeat, 7l-70. Middlesboro took to the road: and with 'White and Stapleton showing the way, the Vlfilliamsburg Yellow laclcets went down to defeat, 64-57. The Panthers of Knox Central journeyed to town and were stung handily by the lackets, 92-73. Lynn Camp followed Knox Central and they too went on the trail of defeat, 8l-5l. Middlesboro then invaded our neighbor- ing state of Tennessee and met the Lalfollette Owls. The Iackets spoiled the Owls un- defeated season 69-60. 56 The Iackets again hit the road this time to London where they stung the Tigers 77-66. The laclcets traveled to Bell High where they won the Bell High Invitation Tourna- ment by defeating Harlan 55-45, and Bell High 63-57. Next, the lackets journeyed to Clay County. Having won seven straight games, the laclcets met defeat by a score of 72-64. The Iackets hit their stride again and defeated Pineville 77-55, Knox Central 82-66, and Bell High 81-74. Against Barbourville, this year's laclcets gained the distinction of being the only Yellow lacket team to hit l00 points-They did this in defeating Barbourville 100-83. The Iackets continued this pace in defeating Lynn Camp, 74-68, Harlan 74-59, and Pine- ville, 73-72. Again Lone lack defeated the Yellow Iackets-this time, 64-58. But the lackets got back on their winning ways by defeating Bell High 86-8l, and Wil- liamsburg 84-63. ln the Williamsburg game, Chalk Stapleton hit 45 points to set a new individual scoring record for Middlesboro High School. The lackets kept a new win- ning streak going by defeating Corbin 67-65. Our next ,game was with the league lead- ing Clay County Tigers. Although the lackets staged a great comeback in the second half, they went down before the sharp shooting Tigers 64-59. This brought the Iackets to the District Tournament. The lackets drew the power- ful Lone lack five. Although they fought hard all the way, the lackets went down 82-70. The Iackets had members chosen for the All-Tournament team. They were Frank White, Tommy Stapleton, and Paul Braden. The Seniors whose play made this season a successful one were: Frank Birdog White, Tommy Happy Stapleton, Harvey Drum Yeary, Bobby Smiles Barton, Don Sid Denny, Bill Fats Clark, Larry Smoke McKinney, David Bluster Hat- field, and Paul Piston Braden. The other member was a junior, Doug Ducky Mays. 1 iris. 57 '47 CHEERLEADERS :Q li INTERMISSION S ' ' 1 N I 5, .ff KW' , .f 2 X ' r 1 1 K Eunice Bussell, Carol Dillman, Mary Lee Eastridge, Bobbie Emmett, Ioan Huff, loan Keck, Charlene Lybrand, Lois Marsee, Io Ann Miller, Regina Moyers, Brenda Owens, Mary Helen Roberts, Leona Rowlett, Faustine Scott, Phyllis Sparks, Nona Lou Standley, Nancy Taylor, Ioann Warner, Alice Williams, Martha Yeary, Vennie Yates, Gladys Longsworth, Dorothy Pace, Mary Nell Baker, Joyce Brooks, Margaret Bruce, Geraldine Carter, Brenda Cox, Pat Davis, Sandra Davis, Reba Denny, Marion Dix, Ieanette England, Mary Eleeman, Pat Harn- lin, loanne Hansand, lane Harrell, ludy Hatifield, Carolyn Hurst, Geneva Lode, Shelby I. This again was a conference game but more than that it was a game of rivals. The Iackets were early in showing what they thought of the old rivalry as they jumped to a 6-U lead. They quickly scored again and by the half had run up a 26-6 lead. The Bobcats fought back, but again the lackets were on the top end of the score: this time 40-l2. On a miserable day for football with threatening skies and a muddy field, the lackets met their arch rival in the long- awaited game with Pineville. For the first time in three years the lackets could look for revenge, for the last three years had ended in defeat for the lackets. The Iackets jumped to an early 6-O lead in the first quarter. The Lions fought back but were un- able to penetrate the lackets' goal as time after time the lackets bolted their drives. While playing a very good defensive game, the offensive unit rolled to another touch- down and went into the half with a l3-O lead. Soon after the second half got under way, the lackets went over for another touchdown, making the score 20-U. Again the defensive unit stopped the Lions' drive, this time almost on the goal line. The lackets took the ball here and went about 80 yards for a touchdown. The third period ended with the lackets ahead 27-U. The Iackets could not be held back and as the whistle blew the score read Middlesboro 33 Pineville 6. 68 The next week saw a test of the two con- ferences as the second SEKC place lackets met the CVC second place Harlan team. The Iackets gained a 7-O lead in the first quarter and held on until the half. ln the third quarter lVI'boro made the score l4-0 in our favor. The lackets scored again in the 4th quarter and the game ended with Middlesboro winning 2l-O. During the regular season the Iackets had shown themselves outstanding and were invited to play in the Pinnacle Bowl at Middlesboro. Their opponents were the high-scoring Whitesburg Yellow lackets. Middlesboro was the slight favorite but it was believed that Middlesboro might be de- feated. But the Iackets again proved their strength and set down the Whitesburg ll with a 33-6 victory and were thus the first team to win a bowl game for Middlesboro. Thus another successful season came to a close for the Middlesboro Yellow lackets. The Iackets were ranked eighth in the state and were second in scoring with a total of 332 points for the season. The following Seniors played hard and gave all they had in all the games. lt was behind the performances of these Seniors that brought Middlesboro its winning season.
