The change from the single-wing system, which had been prevalent in Yellow Jacket football up to this year, to the Split-T formation was used with great advantage by the team. Late in August the familiar call of football acti- vities was answered by the Yellow Jacket squad. Two weeks before school started the boys journeyed to football camp at Norris Lake. After days of tough drilling by coaches Campbell, Gadd, and Fuson, the team gradually rounded into shape. The boys were eager to work and when they came home from camp, they were anxious to write another Yellow Jacket season into the record books. The jackets opened the season by meeting our annual foes, the Knoxville High Trojans. Although COACHES W. W. Campbell Ralph Gadd CO-CAPTAINS Mickey Williamson James Herd

the Jackets were greatly outmanned, their play was outstanding The Troian backfield tried p'ay after play through the line, but the Yellow Jacket forward wall throttled each attempt. The blocking and tack- ling was savage on both teams. However, Ray Byrd and Bill Blackstock rambled on some long runs which resulted in the defeat of the Jackets. The final score was 25-6 wtih the Jackets scoring in the last thirty seconds of the game. Next on the schedu'e was the Lynch Bulldogs. Although Middlesboro played a hard game, they could not get their running attack started. As a result Lynch came out on top 6-O. This loss to Lynch was a great blow to the Jackets. Realizing that they must buckle down to work, the Yellow Jackets were really busy on the days preceding the game with Hall High. This was the first home game for Middlesboro and they showed their loyal supporters what they coud do Every play gained for the Jackets With Gulley smashing through the Hall line and Herd, Buckner, and Smith skirting the ends the Yellow Jackets tromped Hall 68-6. Sheer fighting spirit was the motto of our Yellow Jackets in the game with Somerset. No one could believe, after the game, that the Brier Jumpers had been a two touchdown favorite. The Briar Jumpers were smashed on every play and the final score indi- cated this fact. Middlesboro followers were exultant over the score, l9-6 in our favor. Then came our game with Corbin. The Redhounds placed one of the best teams in C, V. C. history on the field, The Jackets fought brave'y, but nothing went right for them, The superior running attack of Corbin was too much for us. The end of the fourth quarter found the Jackets on the short end of a 25-O score. The Bell Hi Bobcats were our next -foes, After the 'drubbing they took from Corbin, the Jackets played a good game and won 20-7. The split-T attack of the Jackets really showed up in this game. The following week found ,Benham at Middles- boro. The Jackets continued their winning spree and and won 2l-O. The futile attempts of the Benham team to stop us were in vain. Again the team play of the Jackets was notable, Evarts, the CVC. champs in l948, met the Yellow Jackets in Middlesboro on Friday, October 28 The Jackets were seeking revenge and they couldn't be stopped. The final score showed our Jackets on top, 3l-6. The Four Wings and Seven Stingers really buzzed on Friday, November 4, This was the date of the perennial Pineville-Midd'esboro battle The Yellow Jacket backfield was great and the line was im- penetrable, Although the Mountain Lions had a good team, they were not good enough. Williamson, Herd, Buck- ner, Raney, Sam Smith, and Lentz, along with the other Jackets, played savagely and brought another victory back from Pineville The final score was ld-O for the Jackets The final game of the season was with Harlan. Probably this was the hardest game the Jackets played all vear The Green Dragons were tough and well- trained A safety by Middlesboro provided the mar- gin of victory for the Jackets 9-7 For the senior members of the souad, the cfcse of the football season was a sad event lt was hard to think about donning a Middlesboro uniform for their final game as a Yellow Jacket Middlesboro suoporters will remember the '49 team member: for their great Yellow Jacket fighting spirit Their advlce to future Yellow Jackets would be this Remember the team' Play hard' Give your best for Middlesboro l-hgh School and that will always be sufficient' We El be in the game with you with our spirit and hearts' These words from Williamsnin, Hero Buckner, Smith, Raney' and Lentz the senior Yellow Jackets of l949 all Z T I ll LJ ,c --,
