MIDDIETTE PRESENTED BY THE CLASS OF ’66 As departing seniors we would like to give you an all around view of Middlebury High School. Here you see students and teachers as they go through their busy days . 2 This has been the scene of teachers, friends, classes, homework, tardy passes, problems, joys, and activities . 3 Our school day is divided into seven periods . During this time we put forth all our effort 4 5 Although we are very busy we all find time for social life. We have a wide variety of sports and activities which include basket-ball games, dances, skating parties, clubs, proms, and many, many more. All of these bring lasting memories . 7 CADEMIC SOCIAL STUDIES Mr. Galt and Mr. Shellenberger are busy teaching the functions of our government. The courses taught are world history, U. S. history, and government. Through these classes one learns the fundamentals of world governments. 10 BUSINESS Mrs. Funkhouser and Miss Hoover teach the business courses. Mrs. Funkhouser teaches typing I and II and bookkeeping. Shorthand comes under the direction of Miss Hoover. Together they prepare students to enter the business world. n ENGLISH Mrs. Stuckey and Mr. Welty teach high school English. A person must be well educated in the field of English to enter the course of life he chooses. These two well equipped teachers do their best to prepare their students for the world ahead. 12 SPANISH Miss Hoover teaches Spanish. In the world of today, fluency in a foreign language is very important. By taking this foreign language one learns the practices and customs of another country. 13 MATH Under the guidance of Mr. Clark and Mr. Windbigler, students of M.H.S. are subjected to trigonometry, plane and solid geometry, and algebra. These courses open the door to a much brighter future. 14 SCIENCE From their sophomore year onward, students gain the acquaintance of Mr. Haller in biology and Mr. Windbigler in physics and chemistry. With modern laboratory techniques and demonstrations, they learn scientific skills. 15 SPEECH Mr. Welty teaches speech. In this class a student learns to communicate with other people. Public speeches are made, and experience is gained . GUIDANCE § OCCUPATIONS Mr . Nafziger, the guidance counselor, teaches the occupations course, a course which gives students a head start in choosing their careers . In addition, he answers questions for students of all ages concerning plans for college or a job. 16 HEALTH g PHYS. ED. Mr. Galt, Mr. Pratt, and Mrs. Ransberger make up the health and physical education staff. Their work in this department takes up time after school hours as well as the entire school day. Physical fitness is one of the most important attributes of a fit American of today. 17 • j INDUSTRIAL ARTS Mr. Kurtz is in charge of the industrial arts department. Through him, all high school boys are given the opportunity to take courses such as drafting, woodworking, electronics, auto mechanics, and metalworking. VOCATIONAL AGRICULTURE Mr. Haller teaches vocational agriculture. Throughout the course, boys are taught everything from the bookkeeping of a productive farm to the construction of the buildings. The boys end up being near experts in judging livestock and crops. 18 HOME ECONOMICS The home economics department is taught by Miss Hooley. In this department girls are taught the practices of cooking and sewing as well as home management. ART Mr. Unziger heads the art department. He developes in our students an interest in the fine arts. Art students learn theory as well as gain skill in art. 19 BAND Mr. Burkholder is Middlebury High School's bandmaster. He is the man responsible for molding our band into a body that our school can be proud of. His charge extends into grade school, and he couldn’t be busier. CHOIR Mr. Nafziger begins his work with the elementary children. They are taught basic concepts, and by the time they reach high school, they qualify for membership in one of the finest high school choirs in the area. 20 RENDEZVOUS The Junior-Senior Banquet was held at the White Spot in Mishawaka. Cathy Allen Bev Jo Rich Ameda Wanda Ron Shirley Rex Ken Doug 71 Cindy Bob Rosie Julie Pat On September 1, 1954, 44 spanking new faces entered Middlebury Community School for the first time. They were guided through their first year by Mrs. West and Miss Yoder. Through grade six, we formed good foundations for learning under Miss Yoder, Mrs. West, Mrs. Prough, Mrs. Lantz, Mrs. Yoder, Mrs. Copp, Mr. Lehman, Mrs. Bontrager, and Mr. Watters. We also added Mike Frederick, Ken Pletcher, Bob Vogelzang, and Paul Zook to our ranks. At the beginning of seventh grade we had 53 members. We were introduced to such novel things as Play Day, changing of classes, and lockers. In eighth grade we had sole possession of last place in Play Day for the second year straight, but we also had the seventh graders to look down upon. Larry Adkins and Patty Kline joined our club that year. When we entered high school in the fall of 1962, we inherited Mary Lou Beachy, Marlena Dolph, Rex Hooley, Steve Platz, Mary Robinson, Pat Sevrey, and Bette Sue Yoder from York. Also, Pater Metz came to Middlebury. Together we rolled raw eggs across the baseball diamond and became full-fledged high-schoolers . Our Sophomore year found us dissecting frogs and what not in biology. We were rewarded with a trip to Chicago. Sharon Schwietert joined us in tenth grade. We chose our class rings . 72 During our Junior year, that phenomena of days flying past before we noticed them developed to its fullest extent. We elected the following officers: President, Mike Frederick; Vice President, Don Miller; Secretary, Diane Hostetler; Treasurer, Rex Hooley; and Reporter, Gloria Burkhardt. Our sponsors were Mrs. Smith and Mr. Windbigler. Our class rings arrived and for several weeks we drove the other classes batty showing them off. We also received our class sweaters. Our projects included selling concessions at the basketball games, a record-breaking magazine sales, and our class play, The Whole Truth. We threw a banquet and a Prom for the Seniors at the White Spot Restaurant. The theme was Rendezvous in Paris. John Troyer and Cindy Norton came to Middlebury High. Then came the big year! Our first business was to elect officers, who were: President, Mike Frederick; Vice President, Don Weirich; Secretary, Diane Hostetler; Treasurer, Rex Hooley; and Reporter, Patty Kline. Our sponsors were Miss Hoover and Mr. Shellenberger, and Paul Gingerich came to us from the heart of Illinois. Twenty-four of our class have been at Middlebury for all twelve years: Doug Andrews, Julianna Bontrager, Gloria Burkhardt, Allen Cross, Rosemary Eash, Wanda Eash, Diane Hostetler, Ruby Hostetler, Almeda Kline, Shirley Mast, Patricia Mecum, Beverly Miller, Don Miller, Peggy Miller, Richard Miller, Paul Miller, Marcia Morse, Cathy Smucker, Judy Troyer, Don Weirich, Linda Wenger, Ron Yoder, Perry Zehr, and Nancy Zigler. We sold candy, concessions, and fish to raise money. Our class play was a drama, The Remarkable Incident at Carson Corners. We took a short trip to West-ville in the spring, and we left for New York City during the last week in March. May brought baccalaureate, commencement, and an end to our twelve years of hard work. It is time for us to leave M .H .S. now, but we can never forget what it has brought us and given us ..We know its efforts shall not have been in vain.
