MIDDIETTE MIDDLEBURY HIGH SCHOOL Middlebury, Indiana Foreword As our school days come ro their close, we pause to look back upon the friends and the happiness we have had. Our last year has been one filled with many experiences which we shall never forget. The joys, the sorrows, the fun, and the hard work -these are all a part of our memories. In the 1964 MIDDIETTE we have tried to preserve for you through pictures these wonderful memories of Middlebury High School. The Editors EDITORS-IN-CHIEF ART EDITORS BUSINESS MANAGERS ELEMENTARY EDITORS Table o Dedication Faculty Elementary Advertisements Contents Foreword Classes Seniors Juniors Sophomores Freshmen Junior High Activities Sports DIANA KAY STOOKEY We, the class of '64, dedicate the Middiette to Diana, our classmate and friend, who except for a tragic accident would have shared our senior memories with us. The memory of her vivacious personality and sparkling smile will always live in our hearts. ADMINISTRATION School Board (STANDING) Don Shoup, President; Robert Cripe, Aldean Wander. Treasurer. (SEATED) Mary Smucker, Secretary; Walter Babb, Trustee; Alvin Hershberger. Gerald Hayworth, Superintendent. The Board of Education of the Middlebury Community School is looking forward to educational progress and maintaining a policy of continual improvement of the educational facilities of your school. The members of this board who are appointed by the Middlebury Town Board and the Township Advisory Board serve at a job which requires an unselfish contribution of time and energy. The Middlebury School Board, representing the taxpayers of this community, is constantly working with the school administration to advance and further develop the educational opportunities offered to the students. GERALD L. HAYWORTH All of us have been or are a part of the school’s education field in which many seeds of various assortments have been sown in anticipation of a bumper crop. The school has sown the seeds for us hoping that we as a part of the crop will grow and add beauty, stature, and quality to the field. The crop is not finished growing at the end of the formal school years. There are bushels of growing yet to be done. There’s a whole lifetime of it. The seed has already been sown. --The cultivation is left for us. FRANK T. GOODE My faith in youth leads me to believe that the unlimited challenges of modem education will be met. Certainly these challenges will not be dispelled with ease, but sacrifice and hard work. Students of Middlebury High School have the choice of accepting or rejecting these challenges. Acceptance could open doors to new frontiers of knowledge for the student and society, but rejection could close these doors forever. Mrs. West and Mrs. Oberlin guided us through our first year. We were the first class big enough to merit two complete rooms. 1953- 54 Mrs. Oesch and Mrs. Prough were our second-grade teachers. We seemed always to be too young for some things; too old for others. 1954- 55 We missed by one year being placed in the new elementary building. Mrs. Lantz and Mrs. Yoder, our teachers, guided many noon-hour softball competitions. 1955- 56 Mrs. Yoder graduated with us into the fourth grade. She and Mrs. Copp worked zealously to impart knowledge to their eager scholars. 1956- 57 We decided that men make good teachers, too. Mr. Wilson and Mrs. Bontrager shared the job of instructing us during this year--our fifth. This spring, our classmate. Carmen Brandeberry. had to leave for her homeland of Puerto Rico. Our class trip to Greenfield Village and Canada left us starry- eyed. 1957- 58 Mrs. Bontrager and Mr. Yoder taught our sixth-grade classes. We're still laughing over that April Fool noon-hour when Mr. Yoder's cowbell mysteriously disappeared, giving us a long recess! This year we visisted the Windy City--Chicago. In our six elementary years, we gained two more permanent classmates--John Kaufman and Allen Sims. 1958- 59 Junior high was the fun of lockers and a different teacher for every class. Fern Mast joined us this year. We were being prepared for hign school, and we loved it. 1959- 60 This was our eighth year. Our Minstrel Show--the first of its kind at Middlebury--was a great success. Mr. Bones (Allen Sims), Mr. Tambo (Harvey Troyer), and the Master of Ceremonies (John Riegsecker) drew myriad laughs from the audience. Miss Detweiler, a student teacher, assisted Mrs. Sala in organizing the program. Ruth Wingard was now part of the class. 1960- 61 Our first year in high school! Ten York students came to us: Glen Beachy, Bob Freshour, Larry Gingerich, Doris Graber, JoAnn Kiefer. Mary Ann Roderick, Vernon Yoder, Ron Moore, Greg Mosier, and Glenn Nihart. Phil Sla-baugh joined us from Shipshewana. Diana Stookey came to us from Leesburg but waited until the second semester to move. 1961- 62 We ordered our class rings, but we had to wait for them until the next fall. 1962- 63 Elwin Hash, Shirley Timm, and Richard Shrock joined us this fall. Our Junior Class officers were: President, Mike Lambright; Vice-President, John Eby; Secretary, Raeola Miller; Treasurer. Bonnie Eash; and Reporter. John Kaufman. Mrs. Smith and Miss Failing, our sponsors, gave us a lot of help with our magazine sales, carwash, and numerous bake sales. Our class play, Come Out of the Closet, was given in April, by which time we had our class sweaters. 1963- 64 This year has been our best year of high school. With Miss Hoover and Mr. Shellenberger as our sponsors, we chose the following class officers: President, Allen Sims; Vice-President, John Riegsecker; Secretary. Bonnie Eash; Treasurer, Dee Cripe; and Reporter, Richard Shrock. Twenty-six of us attended Middlebury all twelve years: Julie Benner, Joe Bontrager, Tamra Bowman, Dee Ann Cripe, Bonnie Eash. La Von Eash. Orvin Eash, John Eby, John Riegsecker. Darlene Stalter, Jim Steele, Junior Weirich, Irajean Koontz. Roy Kuhns, Carles Kwilinski. Dorcas Lambright. Mike Lambright, Richard Leichty, Diane Miller, Keith Miller, Marvin Miller. Mervin Miller, Raeola Miller. Wayne Miller, Marsha Mott, and Barbara McKibbin. We had candy and bake sales, sponsored a dance, and helped with concessions. We gave a carwash, and worked enthusiastically on the class play, The Curley Tale. Our Fish Fry was a big success. Our class trip to New York and the World's Fair was enlightening and fun, although we could barely stumble off the train at the week's end. And now is is Commencement night. We fumble a little, fastening our robes. Mortarboards straight, the Class of 64 marches into the gym. toward those diplomas. This is the end--and the beginning!
