THE SENIOR CLASS HISTORY On September 5. 1949. fifty-two eager boys and girls entered the first grade of Middlebury Community School. That year the first grade was taught by Mrs. Oberlin and Mrs. Oesch. The other teachers who guided us from the first grade through the sixth grade were Mrs. Valentine. Mrs. Lantz, Mrs. Bontrager. Mr. Yoder. Mrs. Copp. and Mr. Shellenberger. After completing six years of school, in which there were several gains and several losses, we entered Junior High School with fifty-six members. It was really quite a change from the elementary grades where we had one teacher. We entered High School in the fall of 1957 with fifty-six members in our class. Remember that Freshman initiation. Remember those backward jeans, shirts, and blouses. We did not think it was very funny until the next day. Anyway, we were officially initiated into high school. Our sponsors that year were Mr. Haller and Mr. -Roush. In our Sophomore year we had a lot of fun initiating the Freshmen. Those poor kids--how they did suffer. We also chose our class rings that year. Our Sophomore Class sponsors were Miss Baker and Mr. Clark. Then came the big year with all Its gaiety--the class play and the Junior-Senior Banquet. We had our annual magazine sales, and we chose as our class play Pecks Bad Boy. Boy. it was a big success. For the Junior-Senior Banquet we used the theme Hawaiian Paradise and the banquet was held in the All-Purpose Room in Middlebury. We chose our class colors, which are black and white, and we also ordered our class sweater in black and white. Our Junior Class sponsors were Mr. Bodager and Mr. Hoover. At last we made our Senior year. We have forty-one members in our class this year. There are twenty-four of us who started in the first grade in 1949 and have gone to Middlebury their entire school life. Our class officers this year are as follows: President. Steve West; Vice-President. Jim Cross; Secretary. Vicki Mott; Treasurer. John Shrock; Reporter. Delores Steele; and SOS Representatives. Gwen Bradshaw, Jim Cross, and Vicki Mott. We also gave our Senior Play and used two casts. The cast of Twelve Angry Men was all boys and the cast of Twelve Angry Women was all girls. The play was a big success and a repeat performance of Twelve Angry Men was given. We took our Senior Trip the first part of May. We spent four wonderful and exciting days in New York City. All the members of the class had an enjoyable time. Then came Baccalaureate and Commencement--the last activities of the Senior Class of 1961.
