Text from Pages 1 - 108 of the 1956 volume:

THE MIDDIETTE FOR 1956 FOREWORD This annual was made because, as has been custom, every year the senior class tells the story of the school during the year. It's a good custom in many respects, for the days in school are cherished and remembered by everyone. Also, the emphasis of education can not be too great, because one year at school is only a search of a small chunk of the vast storehouse of knowledge. Yet, this Middiette for '56 is different from others. It is our own creation and we leave it as a trace of our steps. We have had new experiences in this endeavor and have grown because of it. With a feeling of pride and joy we present the Middiette for 1956. P. S. This foreword looks forward to the high adventure of continuous learning in the future. But with all the headaches and problems that we had, it was fun and we gained much experience in compiling this year's book. The person who supplied a large part of the know-how and shared a lot of the responsibility was Miss Hoover, our advisor, who was invaluable to the production of this annual. With a sigh of relief and happiness we can say this is School at Middlebury in '55-’56. These people were responsible for this whole book. News is written and edited by the Foghorn staff which is made up of seniors in the second year typing class. The grade teachers contribute news from grades 1 to 6. The class reporters hand in news for the upper six grades and club reporters and high school teachers also turn in articles. The paper is mimeographed and about 250 copies of each edition are distributed. Not only grade, class, and club news is printed in our paper, but sports and jokes as well. The paper also contains many polls taken by the staff in order to learn more about the different students' favorites--favorite foods, actors, actresses, hobbies, songs, pet peeves, and many others. They have various duties, such as: checking books in and out, cataloging and processing books, and arranging books in correct order on the shelves. They are polite and courteous to the students, and whenever students need guidance in selecting a book, our student librarians are always ready to help. The Bang! Bang! of a gavel tells us that the Speech Club is again in session. The club has organized from the senior speech class in order to promote the practice of parliamentary procedure in its meetings and the practice of speech making in its programs. They even catch hurried glimpses of the basketball game as they go about seating these large crowds at the Middlcbury games. The main objective of this club is to seat persons at basketball games, but they are always ready to help wherever else they are needed. The service they give to our school is rewarded by free admission to basketball games and even a dinner on the school once in a while. HERE COMES THE CROWD” USHERS’ CLUB s.o.s. THE STUDENTS SPEAK The Student Organized Society is a group that every student from grades 7-12 should take an interest in for it is with this group--the representatives we elect --that we can speak for what we want in our school. This year the S. O. S. has taken steps on improving our school. We have Chapel and Assembly Committees which arc in charge of all school programs and will help decide future programs. The Constitution of the S. O. S. was studied through by the Cabinet this year and various amendments proposed to the Society. We hope that the improved Constitution will be used more thoroughly in years to come and will provide a basis for a strong and active Student Organized Society. S.O.S. During the first semester, rehearsals were held during the third period on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The Choir’s first public appearance was made at the Christmas pageant. Besides learning seasonal songs, they also memorized novelty numbers, such as, The Orchestra, and Clancy Lowered the Boom. Some periods were also spent listening to recordings, among which were Saint Saeus, Carnival of the Animals, and Beethoven's 5th Symphony. The Choif, under the direction of Mrs. Saia sang at several convocations. SIX TEENS The Six Teens are chosen from the freshman class every fourth year and appear as a vocal ensemble during their four high school years. They made their first public appearance in November. Working hard, they have prepared numbers for Christmas and winter appearances in school as well as in the community. This organization is indeed a great opportunity for these young high school students. CONCERT CHOIR The Concert Choir Is made up of twenty-five boys and thirty-three girls who are directed by Mrs. Saia. This was Mrs. Sala s first year at Middlebury and she has worked very hard trying to make the Choir a good one. The Choir sang for convocations on several occasions and participated in the Christmas pagaent. Several concerts were given by the Choir during the school year. On October 27, twenty-three Choir members took part in a chorus at North Central High School in South Bend under the direction of Or. Harry Wilson of Columbia University. Sponsored By FIRST STATE BANK Middlebury, Indiana BAND The Band consists of 41 members of the high school and junior high school. We are very proud to have Mr. Vincent Stouder as our director. We have five seniors that are in the Band this year but the majority of the Band is very young. The Band has marched at basketball games and played for the public at some concerts. We try to please the community as much as we can and by doing this we become more and more skilled with our instruments. The high-light of the Band this year is the district and state contests. We hope to rank very high in each. Sponsored By SCOTT KINDY TV Goshen. NORMA MILLER DONNA MILLER WALLACE SHELLENBERGER KATIE YODER ERLEEN TAYLOR STANLEY KRAMER GARY YODER CLASS HISTORY Forty-five eager little faces entered the halls of Middlebury School for the first time on September 8, 1944, with Miss Mast as our teacher. From the first grade through the sixth grade, the teachers who guided us were Mrs. Valentine, Mrs. Wenger, Miss Miller, Mrs. Morrison, Mr. Hunsberger, and Mrs. Bontrager. After successfully completing six years of school with several gains and losses, we entered Junior High with thirty-nine members in our class. While in Junior High, we were faced with many new experiences. Among these were: Basketball games with other schools, different teachers and different rooms for each subject, class officers, and class sponsors. Our class sponsors in Junior High were Mrs. Lounsbury and Mr. Diener. We entered High School in the fall of fifty-two with thirty-nine members in our class. The first thing we encountered was initiation by the sophomores. Remember those backward jeans and blouses? By the way, we won the big money that day also' After we were officially entered into high school, we settled down to hard work. Our class sponsors that year were Miss Yoder and Mr. Kurtz. In our sophomore year, we turned the tables and had the privilege of initiating the freshmen. Those poor people -- how they did suffer! We also chose our class rings this year. Our class sponsors were Mrs. Stansfield and Mr. Biddle. Then came the big year with all its gaiety -- class play and Junior-Senior Banquet. We also had our annual magazine sale. We chose as our play, “Uncle Fred Flits By. It was a huge success as are most of the things that we do! The Junior-Senior Banquet was held at the Van Orman Hotel in Fort Wayne. The theme was “Moonlight and Roses. We chose as our class sponsors for that year, Mrs. Fisher and Mr. Hoover. At last we made it' (Our senior year, in case you were wondering!) We have twenty-one members in our class. There are nine members of our class who started in the first grade in 1944 and have gone to Middlebury their entire school Ufe. They are: Marilyn Baer, Jim Cole. Marilyn Hooley. Delores Urn-bright. Stanford Mecum, Norma Miller, Clair Smith, Gary Yoder and Mike Yoder. Our class officers this year are: President. Marilyn Baer; Vice President, Phil West; Secretary, Norma Miller; Treasurer, Gary Yoder; Reporter, Donna Miller; and S.O. S. Representatives, Katie Yoder and Wallace She lien berger. Our class sponsors are Miss Hoover and Mr. Kurtz. We gave our play. Seventeenth Summer” in April. We were real busy this year making money so we could enjoy ourselves in New York. We left for New York on April 17 and came home, tired but full of new experiences, on April 20. All members had an enjoyable time. On Thursday, May 24, we donned our caps and gowns to receive our diplomas. This was our last activity as a senior class.
