Our second year began on September 8, 1942, and twenty-nine of us returned to spend the year happily with Miss Verna Yoder. When our third year arrived on September 3, 1943, we numbered thirty- one. Miss Joy Hooley was our teacher, and we enjoyed the days spent amidst the in- teresting and fascinating things to learn and do in her room. September 5, 1944 arrived and brought our return to school. We found our- selves under the leadership of Miss Rhea Yoder. School bells rang for our entry into the fifth grade on September 4, 1945. We happily, if a bit noisily, greeted seventeen members of our old group with Mrs. Gail Morrison as our teacher. Mr. Andrew Hunsperger was our teacher when we returned to school in September, 1946. This year our class enrollment was twenty-eight. ' We entered Junior High in September, 1947, with Miss Helen Ferrow as our class sponsor. In September, 1948, we elected Mr. John Young as our class sponsor. This year we sold concessions at the Junior High Basketball Tourney. We entered high school in 1949 with Mr. Daniel Diener and Miss Alice Rupel as our sponsors. A's a part of our course of study , we were initiated. As Sophomores, we elected Miss Virginia Yoder and Mr. Robert Biddle as our sponsors. During this year LaMar Tyson was stricken and died of polio. Our Junior sponsors were Miss Mary Hoover and Mr. Alfred Albrecht. This year we planned the Junior-Senior Banquet and gave our Junior Play, Meet Me In St. Louis . V We entered our Senior year with eighteen former members and one new member, Marlene Mishler, who moved here from Concord. During the year, Nellie Hicks moved here from Goshen and Ruth Hostetler from Aurora, Ohio. Our class officers are President, Edward Stutzg Vice-President, Lowell Baerg Secretary, Cecilia Wesdorpg Treasurer, Ira Kauffmang and Reporter, Beverly Broadworth. Our S. O.S. Representatives are Marlene Mishler, Lowell Baer, and Richard Miller, the latter being President of the organization. Our sponsors are Miss Mary Hoover and Mr. Nick Yacuk. Our Senior Play, Mother Was A ' Freshman was very successful. We are looking forward to the banquet and our trip to Washington D. C. Then comes graduation. We hate to leave the halls of M.'H.S. but we hope to --be seen by our deeds and to make our school proud of us. f Sponsored By PINE MANOR Goshen Class Will We, the Class of l9A53, hereby declare ourselves to be leaving the halls of M. Middlebury Senior Class Prophecy Tonight is the 20th of June, 1978. I am at the home of Mrs. Wayne Leatherman, formerly Darlene Nusbaum and formerly a classmate of mine. I ,am now attending their silver wedding anniversary, whichipromises to be a big affair and will certainly make the Independent's society column, just as all of Mrs. Leatherman's socials do. Mrs. i Leatherman achieved her social position because of her ability to do the unexpected. Tonight she is trying something entirely new and different. She is giving an Entertain Yourself party so that she can go out with her husband while we celebrate their anniver- sary. Both of Darlene's children plus one grandchild are here and also most of her graduating class. Rosina couldn't come tonight. She and her husband had an emergency case. He is one of the worlds best and highly paid surgeons and she is his chief assist- ing nurse. The American ambassador to Mesopotamia developed an abcess of the big toe and had to have it removed beforelhe could leave for his important post. Lowell Baer, another former classmate, was invited but couldn't come. 'Doctors orders, he said. He made Lowell retire from his position of fifth substitute, second alternate left field with the Dodgers, which he had been playing for over twenty years. But after all, baseball is a strenuous game, especially for a man of Lowell's age. Ira Kauffman is here tonight. He used to be a cow puncher until a wild horse threw him and kicked him in the head. After that he retired because he kept forgetting which rein to pull when he wanted his horse to turn. He sings cowboy tunes on TV now, and when he sings Take Me Back to My Boots and Saddle , he cries and all the women cry. What's this? Everybody's laughing! Maurice has just arrived, but I can't figure out what's so funny. Oh, no! Poor Maurice! He's in the poultry business and he and his wife were going to bring the fried chicken for the dinner, but sometimes Maurice gets attached to his chickens and tonight is one of those nights. Here he comes with three live chickens on leashes. He couldn't bear to kill them himself and nobody else seems to want to either. Joanne, Roanne, and Joyce are over there in a corner talking about nursing. All three are R. N. 's. Joanne has probably gone the fartherest of the three in her profession. She takes the part of the chief nurse at the North American Union Clinic for Space Happy Cadets in Captain Planetoid . On Sunday afternoon you may watch Joyce Luke who stars in The Nurse , an educational weekly drama. Roanne, I am sorry to report is just a nurse and has never appeared on television. Charles Mather has also gone into medicine. He is Cheyenne, Wyomingls best and only veterinarian. Cheyenne is a western town, well known because of itsxhigh diseased animal fatality rate. Richard Miller is unable to be with us tonight because the duties of his profession have taken him elsewhere. He is a preacher by calling and a scientist by reason of his calling. At present he is trying to determine whether the lunogoofs, the highest type of creature residing on the moon, have souls and therefore are worth preaching to and saving. He has made several trips to the moon and has given several experimental ser- mons, but has had little success. This is partly due to the fact that the lunogoofs do not speak or understand any language of planet earth and that Richard can't speak a word of Lunish . 4. Sponsored By NEWMAN' FURNITURE, GOSTICH Mr. and Mrs. Curt Baker, formerly Marlene Mishler, were unable to make it to- night. Unable to afford a car with a motor in it, they have bought a Model A Ford body with wheels, tire, a front seat, and a steering wheel to hold the trailer up when they travel and to maintain their social prestige. The trailer is equipped with anelectric fan for a propeller, with canoe paddles, and a hand operated paddle wheel to use in case the electric fan fails, plus a hand brake. Tonight, however, the fan, paddles, and the last paddle on the paddle wheel broke down. Luckily the brakes and the steering wheel are still working and the front seat still has one spring left. Carol Vincent has achieved a position of greatness in science along with her hus- band, William Johnson Vincent, who has devoted his life to studying the eyes of potatoes. He has formulated the theory that potatoes will have better night vision if planted together with carrots. Carol, whose great name he has borrowed, is chairman of the committee for the digging of the potatoes for Mr. Vincent's experiments. Buddy Stutz, is not here tonight. Buddy has achieved world fame as a heroic stunt pilot. Several years ago he set a record by flying his piper cub around the world in -30 days. He flew backwards. Cecilia and Shirley are stars, rivals, and friends in a new television panel show, What's My Number? which needs no further explanation. Thomas Kauffman and his pretty wife, Elaine, are here tonight. He is owner and she is manager of Buzz Saw Incorporated. The sawf used is really not a buzz saw,' but an ordinary hand operated saw run by Mrs.' Kauffman while Mr. Kauffman sleeps loudly. Thus the term Buzz Saw . Another prominent guest at the party tonight is Ruth Hostetler, professor of visual verbal comprehension, the use of graphitefand paper in communication, and mathematical computation at Addleburg Elementary School. She has also made a name for herself in literature. Her best book is Jack and Jean . Her most quoted written phrase is Down, down, down, up, up, up, away, away, away . Beverly is sitting over there in a corner taking care of her correspondence. She writes a column entitled, Keep Him, But Trap Him First . Her column is so popular that it appears in several well known magazines such as Wintertime Romances and Love In The Bowery . Rosalie is married and has three children. One is 6 foot, another is 6 foot, 1 inch, and another is 5 foot, ll inches tall. Her husband is 6 foot, l lfZ inches tall. Idon't know whether you will believe this or not but Rosalie is actually the shortest member of the family. - Nellie Hicks, motion picture and television star, is now entering with her husband to whom she has been married for eighteen years--the first marriage for both. As yet there is no sign of a break-up, although there are rumors that she has been seen with several young men, among them her eighteen year old cousin and a seventeen year old brother, also her three year old grandson. . Well, now that you have heard something about each of Mrs. Leatherman's class- mates, this is your television reporter Mary Scott signing off. We were the prospects for the Class of 1954. With puzzled faces and not knowing what to expect, we faced our lucky for unlucky, teacher, Miss Jennie Mast. We were of course happy to start our' second year with Miss Verna Yoder and the next year with Miss Joy Hooley as our teacher. By the end of this year things were be- ginning to' be a little difficult. Miss Rhea Yoder was our teacher in the fourth grade- It was here we got our first taste of geography. In the fifth grade we had Mrs. Gail Morrison to direct us and in the sixth grade we were under the direction of Mr. A. W. Hunsperger. As our sponsors for our Junior High years, which began in 1948, we had Mrs. Smith and Mr. Kurtz. The day had come that we had all been waiting for, we were in high school. Mr. Kurtz and Mrs. Wiebe were our Freshman sponsors with twenty-two students starting. i As Sophomores we elected Mr. Biddle and Mrs. Delgado as sponsors. This year we started school with twenty students. There are six original students in our class. They are Janice Caton, Roberta Mitterling Neva Hooley, Donald Pollock, Leonard Albrecht, and Larry Hout. We received our class rings on September 26, 19-52. We are also wearing our navyand white corduroy jackets we received on October 2Znd. We chose Miss Shoup and Mr. Albrecht as our sponsors this year. However, the years have brought about a few changes. Steven West joined our group in the second grade. He came to Middlebury from Concord. Last year Judith Mischler joined us. She also had attended Concord. This year we welcomed three new students--Ronald Shellenberger from Waterford, Joseph Kauffman from Yoder Corner, and Barbara Kellerman from St. Thomas school in Elkhart. We feel rather distinctive in our room because the boys so outnumber the girls. At the present time we have twenty-one boys and eleven girls.
