In the first grade to the seventh, we lost school classmates and gained many new ones. Entering Junior High we, I guess you would say, started our basketball career. We chose Sandra Buchtel, Doris Koerner, and Mary Von Blon for our cheerleaders. We chose as our class officers: Sandra Buchtel, President; Mary Von Blon, Vice-President; Dick Evans, Secretary and Treasurer; Leon Yoder, Reporter; and Mr. Kurtz, Sponsor. In the Eighth Grade our cheerleaders were: Rae Ann Fike, Doris Koerner, and Mary Von Blon. The class officers were: Doris Koerner, President; Sonny Cross, Vice-President; Dick Evans, Secretary and Treasurer; Sandra Buchtel, Reporter; and Miss Weber, Sponsor. Our Freshman year we began to take part in high school activities. Some of our boys played high school basketball, baseball, and track. Our initiation party was also this year and they didn't spare anything including us. We enjoyed it anyway. We lost Bill Hout this year because of rheumatic fever. Our class officers were: Don Christy, President; Sonny Cross, Vice-President; Sandra Buchtel, Secretary; Mary Lou Ulrich, Treasurer; Carmon Cripe, Reporter; Mr. Immel, Sponsor. In the Sophomore year our class officers were: Don Christy, President; Martha Pickrell, Vice-President; Jolene Garber, Secretary; Sonny Cross, Treasurer; Sandra Buchtel, Reporter; Miss Yoder and Mr. Biddle, Sponsors. The highlight of the year was a good old-fashioned hayride. In the Junior year we really started working. The magazine sale went over big. Don Christy had the largest sale. The play “Just Ducky was the big success of the year. We all worked hard to make it so. Our concessions went over nicely. We made a good profit. The class officers were: Sonny Cross, President; Sandra Buchtel, Vice-President; Jolene Garber, Secretary; Don Christy, Treasurer; Carmon Cripe, Reporter; Miss Hoover and Mr. Biddle, Sponsors. We opened this year by electing the following class officers: Don Christy, President; Sonny Cross, Vice-President; Mary Lou Ulrich, Secretary; Martha Pickrell, Treasurer; Sandra Buchtel, Reporter; Miss Hoover and Mr. Immel, Sponsors. We started this year by selecting our play “Dear Papa . It was a big success, as are all the things we do. (Some might say, Ha! Ha'.) Next on the list was selecting a photographer to take our Senior pictures. We decided on Mr. R. S. Sutula from Elkhart. Then came the time to decide who would publish our annual. We decided upon Walsworth Bros, of Marceline, Missouri. We are all working very hard to make enough money to take a train trip to Washington, D. C. In order to make that money, we had several bake sales, cookie sales, sold concession, a cake walk, and sponsored Evangeline Collins Mauzy. There are now eight of the original thirty-seven students in our class. They are: Mary Miller, Mary Lou Ulrich, Sandra Buchtel, Carmon Cripe, Doris Koerner, Jolene Garber, Donna Steele, and Lyle Yoder. 24 Class Prophecy I would not have dared to dream about it, when I started racing with my old Model A Ford, without a driver’s license. But maybe that this little practice contributed to that victory, my victory in the “Tour de America of 1975 . I won every lap except the first one, when I met some old friends of the Class of 51 from dear old and was delayed longer than I should have been. But even my manager, Lyle Yoder and his secretary, Edna Swartzentruber did not object to having some fun when we met Gaylord S. in Chicago that night before the opening of the “Tour”. Gaylord is a “big wheel” in the “5 Lake Steamship Company”, and arranged for us to see the guest show which was put on by New York Metropolitan actors for the occasion of the opening of the Tour. When we were sitting in our boxes, which were of course paid by Gaylord, and listening to the opera, we were all surprised by the entrance of an actress whom was announced as Marthana Pickrello, and the best singer present. But we all recognized her at once as Martha Pickrell. Of course we tried to meet her after the performance, and when asked about the change of her name she answered, “An Italian name is more attractive for a great singer.” Well, we had a fine time that night, but I was not quite in shape the next day and lost the first race. That meant I had to “get on the ball” the next day, and I made it. And after I took the races in the next following three days, Lyle, my manager, did not think it would do me any harm to meet a high school class, which wanted to see me, Dick Evans-the successful racer about whom all newspapers were talking. What a surprise when 1 recognized Donna Steele as the sponsor of that class, to the disadvantage of the class, because I talked more with Donna about old times in MHS. Donna also could tell about a few members of the Class of 51, with whom I had lost contact. The time passed too fast, but I had to think of the race the next day. After a few days 1 had won some more races and we had a few days of rest in Portland, Oregon. During these days our health condition was inspected, and I thought I did not see right when Don Christy was the doctor. I should not have been surprised, because I should have expected him around where there is some sport, as much a sportsman as he was. But though it was quite a shock, it meant a nice evening with him and his happy wife Sandra. And as another surprise Don arranged to get Maurine Eash and Doris Koerner free from their duties as nurse’s for that evening. And on went the race for another stage, till we finally came to St. Louis. In the evening when I walked through the town a poster caught my attention. The Nation’s Champion Chicken Farmer was here to be honored, and it was written in clear letters, he was Alvin Cross, accompanied by his publicity agent Lois Vincent. She informed us that Flora and Pat were very happily married. There was nothing to hold me back from seeing him, the “Sonny Boy” from Middlebury. It was not difficult to find him, and soon he made the suggestion to see a basketball game. So we went-because his plans never allow an argument. When we came to the ticket box we looked at each other - a little bit perplexed. Wasn’t the ticket girl Jolene Garber? Of course she could not take time off till after the game, but she let us know that we could expect a big surprise as soon as the game started. And we certainly were surprised as we saw Carmon C. start out for the “Minneapolis Lakers”. I could not stay up very long, but it made me happy that I was not the only one in active sports of the Class of 51. I thought about that all my way to Detroit, where 25 the last rest should be and where my car should be overhauled by the Ford Motor Company. Naturally I had to go to the office there to talk to the manager. But before I could meet him I was led to Mary Miller the first secretary. While I was waiting for my car to get ready I received a cablegram. It was again time for me to look perplexed when Mary Lou Ulrich, the clerk at Western Union, handed me a cablegram from Magdi Reffel who has become one of Europe's best opera singers, and Louis Eisgruber, who works in an agricultural research laboratory. They have both heard of my success and sent me that cablegram of congratulations across the sea. That day 1 wanted to win the race so very badly. When we came back to Chicago, from where we started our All-Around-America Tour, they hung garlands on my car, and cheered. The next day was a big celebration with a speech of the president of the International Motor Club as the climax. And that was the biggest shock of my life. I stood there with my eyes and mouth wide open and looked at the president, till Lyle boxed me in the hip and stammered: You -- isn’t that David Gibson? It took me quite a while to recover from such a shock.........But how come that I have such a headache now -- and my arm hurts too? Who is that man in the white clothes and how did I get in that room, it looks all like a hospital...Maybe it is,--it must be, because I ran against a tree with my old model A yesterday. And that dream, it was not a mere dream, it was a prophecy, because I will be a racer, a champion, too, -- someday! By Lewis Eisgruber. 26 Class Will We the Class of 1951, realize that we cannot stay any longer in dear M.H.S. In appreciation for the services rendered to us, we make this our will and testament. As a class, we do hereby bequeath the faculty the following: Miss Hoover and Mr. Immel - All the headaches and troubles we caused you during our Senior year. Miss Shoup - A lot of little amoebae so she can be real happy and find them under the microscope. Miss Yoder - All our “sour notes” we hit every third period. Mrs. Lounsbury - All the “bad” English we used. (You can just be glad it weren’t any worser'.) Mrs. Wiebe - A plan to give those who eat in the cafeteria more and better food for less money. Mr. Young - Another Senior Class just like we have been. Mr. Biddle - A basketball suit or a bow tie, so that you may either look like your boys or like the other coaches. -- Take your choice. Mr. Yacuk - The quick service of a doctor if you should be injured while performing your duty as scorekeeper sometime. Mr. Kurtz - A new heart as soon as your old one is worn out by the excitement of the basketball games. Mr. Diener - All the (shall we say “unsuccessful”) experiments we have caused. Rollo - A room in M.H.S. where you can teach the students how to change light bulbs in the gym in a safe way. Frank - A new broom which we are sure you will appreciate, ’cause those Freshmen sure keep the building dirty. Donnabelle and Irene - Another boy who carries'heavy boxes from the kitchen to the storeroom for you when the one who does it now leaves school. Mrs. Garber - An elevator to carry you up and down stairs so you won’t get so tired running after kids to come to the phone. We have a very strong feeling that we, as individuals, should leave some of our abilities to our beloved Juniors, to help them to be better Seniors next year. And we hereby leave the following: I, Flora Comstock, will my “luck” of being engaged when a Junior to Mertice Yoder. I, Magdi Reffel, will my singing ability to Carol Cummings and Robert Hout. Our fourth year was spent with Miss Rhea Yoder who is now in India as a missionary, as our teacher. We were the prospects for the class of 1954. With puzzled faces and not knowing what to expect, we faced our lucky (or unlucky) teacher, Miss Jennie Mast. With her loving care we struggled through the first grade in good shape and were ready for the second. In the second grade Miss Verna Yoder was our teacher. We discovered that we had learned quite a lot since that first day in school. We entered the third grade under the watchful eye of Miss Joy Hooley. We had a new pupil in the middle of the year. His name was Gladden Schrock. By the end of the third year things were beginning to be a little more difficult. Miss Rhea Yoder was our teacher in the fourth grade. It was there that we got our first taste of geography. In the fifth grade we had Mrs. Morrison to direct us. In the sixth grade, under Mr. Hunsperger, we had many new experiences to face. We were a bit rowdy at times but we weren’t extremely bad. In the seventh grade, we elected as our class officers: President, Gladden Schrock; Vice-President, Dick Smith; Secretary, Janice Caton; Treasurer, Dick Miller. Our S. O. S. representatives were Judy Linfor and Bob Christy. The class sponsor was Mrs. Smith. Judy Linfor moved to Goshen at the end of the year. In the eighth grade Mr. Kurtz was our sponsor. The officers were: President, Gladden Schrock; Vice-President, Bob Christy; Secretary, Darlene Shrock; and Treasurer, Janice Caton. The S. O. S. representatives were Dick Miller and Vera Eash. Darlene Shrock and Janet West were our new arrivals along with Waldimir Hluchota from the Ukraine. When he arrived he couldn't speak English; he is doing much better now. This year we have Mr. Kurtz and Mrs. Wiebe as our sponsors. The officers are: President, Bob Christy; Vice-President, Vera Eash; Secretary, Darlene Shrock; and Treasurer, Janice Caton. The new pupils are Melvin Gibson, George Trump, Janet Hershberger, Mary Ann Slabach, Lorietta Guise, Patricia Ellis, and Thomas Hooley. The S. O. S. representatives are Bob Christy and Vera Eash. Janet West is the S. O. S. reporter. We have been trying hard to do good here in M. H. S. and with the help of the teachers we think we will come out on top. 36 TOP ROW; SECOND ROW; THIRD ROW; BOTTOM ROW; Eighth Grade Left lo right - Gayle Albert, Dean Brenlaer, Jelon Buchtel, Robert Cole, Donna Hershberger, John Gorden, Ltr.r.le Ann Hostetler, Richard Hooley, Lorraine Kauffman. The boy's had a rough time in their basketball season this year. They were eliminated in the tourney by Jefferson. Th« top money making scheme was the concessions we sold at the Junior High Tourney. 37 TOP ROW; SECOND ROW: THIRD ROW; BOTTOM ROW; Sixth Grade Above loft to right ■ Janet Hook, Lorry Clodfelter, Sue Hout, Lorry Hooley, PhyllU Schrock, Som Yoder. The varsity has an average of 50 points to the opponents 40 points. ..... “B Team ........ The “B Team had an excellent season by losing only one game in nineteen starts. The B Team was in the finals of the Second Team Tourney with Concord. The Second Team also set a new scoring record by scoring 64 points in a game. ..... Baseball ......... The class really enjoyed working and presenting this comedy which kept everyone laughing. The cast was played by the following: Herman Carr, lovable sort of man.................................Alvin Cross Mrs. Carr, his wife.............................................Jolene Garber Laine Carr, the Carr’s daughter................................Doris Koerner Dicky Turner, Laine’s friend......................................Dick Evans George Carr, the Carr’s son.......................................Lyle Yoder Carol Ruth Carr, the youngest member of the Carr family.......Sandra Buchtel Miss Lucinda Carr, a pretty old maid of 55................Edna Swartzentruber Mrs. Elvira McDuffie, a nosy, disagreeable, funny looking woman Martha Pickrell Mr. J. First, Laine receives a letter from a very wealthy girl friend saying she is coming to visit for three days. They don’t know what to do. The house is an awful mess and Mr. Carr hasn't had a job for several months, and spent his time working on an invention on which he hopes to make a fortune. Aunt Lucinda Carr lost all her money and is making her home with them. She can’t hear a word and because she misplaced her ear-phone she receives a check for $50,000 from a lawyer. The Carr’s start buying expensive furniture and clothes. The visitor arrives and everything is going swell when the lawyer returns and wants her money back. Miss Lucinda can’t return it because it is all spent. One unexpected turn follows on the heels of the other. Just as things are at their darkest. Miss Lucinda falls in love with Mr. J. Caswell Drennen and Laine falls in love with Don Drennen and they both announce they are going to be married. It was a real comedy that made the audience laugh all the time. 64 Just Ducky This farce comedy which was different and funny was presented by the Seniors with the aid of Miss Hoover and Mr. Biddle on the evenings of April 20th and 21st, 1950. The cast consisted of the following characters: Mr. Maxwell, who thought he was head of the house..................Don Christy Mrs. Maxwell, who thought she was head of the house.............Martha Pickrell Betty Lou, the Maxwell's daughter...............................Sandra Buchtel Bernadine, Betty Lou’s friend..................................Mary Lou Ulrich Wilbur, the Maxwell's son.........................................Alvin Cross Hercules, Wilbur's bosom pal....................................Richard Evans Connie, the Maxwell's 17 year old daughter.......................Doris Koerner Craig Moore, Connie's boy friend.................................Carmon Cripe Mr. Moore, Craig’s father..........................................Lyle Yoder Miss Del Marshall, a newspaper reporter.........................Jolene Garber Aunt Mary, Mrs. Maxwell’s aunt....................................Lois Vincent Miss Blayne, editor of a lovelorn column..........................Donna Steele What makes teen-age girls do the things that they do? Betty Lou and Bernadine are a couple of questions and problems rolled into two. It seems they are always into something. The day starts off peacefully, Mr. Maxwell chosen as head of the citizen's committee and it seems Betty Lou and Bernadine have always wanted to write to Miss Blayne, editor of the lovelorn column, and of course they have no problem. So they said that the writer was in love with a man forty-five years old who has three children. So they mailed this letter. Their letter wasn’t published in the paper as they hoped, instead Miss Blayne came to call on Mrs. Maxwell. So when Mr. Moore and Miss Del Marshall drop in the girls mistake Miss Marshall for county marshall or some other kind of marshall and think she's going to arrest Betty Lou. So they make out the whole family is crazy even Mr. Maxwell. It so happens the girls signed their letter Just Ducky” and from there on it’s a complete free-for-all, with all the trimmings. 65 Junior-Senior Banquet On the evening of May 12, 1950 the Junior-Senior Banquet was held at the LaSalle Hotel in South Bend. The “Gay Nineties” theme, which prevailed through the evening, was emphasized by the table decorations. The tables were centered with top hats containing carnations which was the Senior flower.
