We have come a long, long way, and suffered a great many hardships. Some of these have been minor while others have been of great importance to us as a class. We have lost several classmates through the course of our four years in high school. One of our greatest losses was the year when Walter Smith moved to Sturgis, Michigan. ln the fall of 1945 this dear classmate passed away Two of our classmates, Enos Weirich and John Troyer, left school be- cause their country called them. There weren' t many exciting things in our lives until last year. The first important thing was our great drama, the Ghost Parade. Of course, that was just a good experience for us, for we never dreamed we could put on the greatest of all Senior plays this year, the play Accidents Will Happen. It was a great success but we owe a great deal to our producers, Mrs. White and Mrs. Walker. Then we had our first formal when we gave the Senior class of '45 their annual banquet. We all felt rather stiff but then so will the Juniors this year. We are looking forward with great eagerness for our Senior banquet. Then at last come the days we have been eagerly waiting for--those of the Senior Trip. We haven't decided as yet where we are going, but you can bet we will have to do something different. We always dolll Our faculty advisors this year are Mrs. Walker and Mrs. White. Our class President is Don Smucker. Vice President is Jerold Hostelterg and Secretary and Treasurer is Gretchen Franz. Our class has 20 members now, 16 less than we had when we first entered high school. We are proud to have two members of our class on the basketball squad. We also have a few members in the Band. Our class is well represented in school activities, with the president of the class as the president of the S. O. S. club too. We also have two S. O. S. representatives. Along toward the end of the school year comes the time for all the events we have been waiting twelve long years for, the night when we have our very solumn Baccalaureate services, the night when we receive our diplomas signed fwe hopel, our Senior Breakfast--for all of those who have enough strength to get up and eat. We are looking forward to graduation from the slave house, but we can all say honestly, We will miss good old M. H. S. next year at this time. .- ,- pf 45, if 1+- A.- W 5? ,:, F: Y Xa 50, 'K 4 W iw :Qi J f , 1 w sw Q. iw' 5 'il 532 fi 5 . PROPHECY Class of 1946 'Tis May llth, sixty-five, Hardly a man now alive Will want to forget all those slick chicks He met in the Class of '46, Mary Lou Bratton, Now Madam by name, Carries with her the trademark Of B eauty Salon fame. At Mervin S. we often wondered And playfully called him Quiz He's now Dr. Mervin Swartzentruber Ph.D., LL.D., A.B., oh, gee whizl Vivian is happily married At last she said I do. And now running competition With the old woman in the shoe. When I look back to 46 And see through all ambitions, Don has his a.nd is busy with Filling out prescriptions. Hilda's great interest was travel, And we realized too soon, 2 She d found the place to do it On that famous Honeymoon. The Romeo of ' 46 We found in Jerold Dean. . He's now living out in Reno and The next is called 13. Dorthy was our mainstay When work was to be done. She's doing well now, too, A husband sought and Won. Throughout our Senior Year at school, We put Levi with the Scholars 3 The name is Lee Frank Crosby now-- Or just Two Million Dollars I Edy's been a model A nice soft job for lifeg But now we hear a different tune 'Tis, Willie has a Wife. Harold is our Hero And so, has gone to seag 2 He s only thirty-eight, and yet An Admiral is he. Irene, with Mary Lou has gone, To help her, oh so quiet, If one complains about her hair Irene yells, Oh, just dye it. The .missionary talent of our class With all it's sags and ravages, Has gone with Kent to Africa-- Visions for the savages. A visit now to Hollywood The actors you will see, And Gretchen in the midst of them As wife, she numbers three. If on the air you chance to hear An announcer they call Hanley, just mark it down, cause pro'bly is The one we all called Stanley. I lmow the answer, quoth the child 7 The name is John Wiles Booth.' KC Correct, my dear, quoth teacher queer The teacher's name---is Ruth. Now if it's traveling you desire Then 'tis a train you'll want. 'Bout the best line you can hire, Iust ask conductor Chuck. We fooled them, though! We elected Richard Miller, President with Lenore Balyeat backing him as Vice President. Iacquelin Cripe took care of our pecuniary affairs, and we dragged through the first year with Mrs. Kent, sponsor. We re-entered school in '44 minus three of our classmates. That year we had important business on our minds, such as choosing our colors and banner. We ordered our class rings, too. Upon our registration this year, we discovered we had lost three more members We chose Roger Krider as President, Richard Miller as Vice President, and Jacque- lin Cripe as Secretary-Treasurer. Miss Krider and Mr. Shetler kindly consented to being our sponsors. We have received our class rings with ohs and ahs from the whole school! Crimson and white being our class colors, we ordered and received red sweaters with white '4'7's on them. To replenish our class treasury, we sold magazine subscriptions. For entertainment we had a skating party and chop suey supper. SOPHOMORE CLASS HISTORY Sponsor -------- Miss Mary Jean Yoder President ------- Harold Hooley Vice President-- Helen Mauck Secretary ------- Margaret Kauffman Bong! We arrived! I September 5, 1944 saw thirty-six Freshmen entering M. H. S. We tore up the stairs with all fury and might! One look at our teachers, and we were put in our places. We elected Mildred Bushong president, Margaret Kauffman, vice president, Janet McKibben secretaryg and Helen Mauck, reporter. We were then treated C ?D to a very dull initiation party, which was not worth the price of admission. We managed to struggle through the year. After vacation, which was greatly enjoyed by all, we returned to M. H. S. and elected officers and sponsor. One night M. H. S. found the Freshmen boys in dresses and the Freshmen girls in braids. Both were liberally smeared with lip- stick. We made quite a few enemies soon after, by winning the basketball season ticket contest. We sold 3200.00 worth of tickets, more or less. Christmas brought a very peaceful exchange at school. We arevery proud of the eleven basketball squad members in our class. They have helped our team to victory many times. Here's to our class and two more successful years in high school! Q -1 1 FREISHMEN CLASS HISTORY in the fall of 1937, the present Freshmen class entered school with twenty-nine members. From then on the school was changed. lln fact so changed that two years later a new school building was built ID Our class increased and decreased until 1942, when the great event happened, we entered High School with thirty-six members, losing, however, four members the first semester. These were Harvey Miller, Melvin Mast Dana Morse, and Pauline Walls. , At the beginning of the year we elected our sponsor, class officers and class colors, which are as follows: . y Sponsor: Mr. Overmyer President: Paul Swartzentruber Vice Pres.: Floyd Yoder Sec. -Treas.: Virginia Schrock Class Colors: Green and White We have been too busy getting settled in our first year of high school to do much in outside activities, but we did have the allotted number of parties. Following the tradition, the Sophomores gave us a hair-raising initiationg also following the tradition, we gave them a peaceful C?J return party. EIGHTH GRADE HISTORY President: Julian Schrock Vice Pres.: Gail Miller Secretary: 'Tom Yoder Treasurer: Bonnie Lou Miller Reporter: Dian Krider Sponsor: Virginia Yoder We started the new year with forty-one members. Our new members were Benjamin Riegsecker, Rudy Miller, Elsie Miller, Kathleen Eash and Pauline Hershberger, but Rudy Miller left us at the end of the first semester. We had a Halloween party, at which we played outdoor games. Refreshments were served by Marcia Miller and Dian Krider. Qf course it went off with a bangl We drew names for Christmas and exchanged our presents on December 21, in the music room. We all had a grand time at the skating party. We can't wait until we can sponsor onel Our boys are doing pretty well in basketball this season. WE got to the finals, and the Freshmen got beat the first game! At the tournament in New Paris, the eighth grade cheer leaders were Marcia Miller and Sharon Buchtel. We are looking forward to four wonderful years in M. H, S. SEVENTH GRADE President --------- Sandra Buchtel Vice President ---- Mary von Blon Sec. -Treasurer- -- Dick Evans News Reporter ---- Leon Yoder We have finally reached junior High! At first we found it very exciting to change classes, but now it is just routine. We had a good Halloween party. It was exciting to find who was who in their costumes. After the games, refreshments were served by Doris Ann Koerner, Mary Lou Ulrich, and Edna Marie Swartzentruber We drew names for Christmas and exchanged our gifts December 21, 1945. Six new members joined our class. They are: LeMar and Robert Drake, Susan Bontrager, Edna Thomas, Edna Mae Yoder, and Alberta Oswald. 0 We started out fairly well in basketball. Sandra Buchtel, Doris Koerner, and Mary von Blon are cheerleaders for our class. I We hope we can make our eighth grade year a little better than we did our seventh grade. SIXTH GRADE One warm September day in the year 1940, thirty-three happy little boys and girls began their education in Middlebury as first graders with Miss Viola Sherck as their teacher. Some of those have moved away and others have moved in. We entered the second grade with Miss Verna Yoder as our teacher. For our third grade teacher we had Miss joy Hooleyg For the fourth grade, Miss Rhea Yoder, for the fifth grade, Miss Jewell Valentine, and for the sixth grade, Mr. A. W. Hunsperger and Mr. Dale Leer. When Griner school closed this fall, most of the pupils came to Middlebury, increasing our enrollment to fifty-five. Because the class was so large, it was di- vided into two sections. Mr. Hunsperger, home room teacher for Section I, teaches reading and arithmetic for both sections. Mr. Leer, Section II's home room teacher. conducts our health, writing, and social studies lessons. The teachers change rooms and we keep our assigned seats. The boys take an active interest in playing baseball and basketball, and the girls form our faithful cheering section. We had a Christmas and Valentine ex- change. We're learning much and having lots of fun and it won' t be long until we're changing rooms! iff? 1 -2. ,. Q 25 5: gf Q FIFTH GRADE On September 2, 1941, thirty children ventured from their homes into the new world of school with Miss Jennie Mast as our teacher. Our second year began on September 8, 1942, and twenty-nine of us re- turned to spend the year happily with Miss Verna Yoder. Some children left and other new faces appeared so that when our third year arrived on September 3, 1943, we numbered thirty-one. Miss Joy Hooley was our teacher, and we enjoyed the days spent amidst the interesting and fascin- ating things to learn and do in her room. When September 5, 1944, arrived and brought our return to school, we found ourselves under the leadership of Miss Rhea Yoder. We especially enjoyed making the art borders and other drawings with which we decorated our room. We dis- covered that as a class we liked arithmetic and were above average in this study. School bells rang for our entry into the fifth grade on September 4, 1945. We happily, if a bit noisily, greeted seventeen members of our old group. Sorrowfully we learned that Joyce Luke was ill with rheumatic fever and would be unable to re- turn immediately. However, Joyce was able to study at home under direction of both her mother and the teacher. Joyce is now well again and our class numbe1s twenty-four. J On Thursday of each week we all spend one active period in the gymnasium. On Friday the boys play a period in the grade basketball league, and the girls have a sewing club. FOURTH GRPHFI HISTORY There are seventeen of us who hav. fpeen in this class since September 8, 1942, when we started to school as first gf-' lers. In these four years we have learned a lot of things. Of course, we have learned to read, write, spell, add, subtract, multiply, and divide, but we have also learned some other very important things in school. We learn how to make friends and keep them. All of us are friends but each of us also has some special friend, like May Lee and Janice Caton, or Leonard and Dick, or Janice Schrock and Vera. One thing we have especially been trying to learn this year is how to be reverent in our bi-monthly chapel services. Nearly all of us go to church and we think we ought to show that we know how to act in such places. Among our regular school subjects we have a new one this year, social studies. We are finding out how other people besides those in Middlebury, Indiana, U. S. A., act, live, work, and play, and why they do as they do. We are enjoying our music classes with Miss Virginia Y oder. Some of us like our music so much that we make staffs and name the lines and spaces for play in our spare time. We are glad for the six new pupils who helped make this such a happy school y9ar Q J C 4.1 5? ww fm.: V, X: X w, A, xx. 5 wx 1 i -Eff: .9 71, if z f F '21 25 Li? rag? f E5 ,.w ,QW K' 25 -3f'ff: f21 W 7: ?iw 1..iQ 5Y .,m.g3,:.3gf 1 QQ, 2' igijwf- 1 , W 3. i L 5 4' 'ww ix 13, 55 235 , qgmyki, Ag. ,, t, fe. , ., -3, Y ur FW- :- wf. Before the first month was over we welcomed three pupils from the Griener County School. They were Ella Thomas, Lavina Hershberger and Rudy Miller. We were introduced to two new courses which we found very interesting. A new health book full of challenging stories helped us form good habits of living. A new English book taught us better ways of speaking. In Arithmetic our greatest accomplished work was learning to borrow in subtraction. We also learned to multiply and divide the tables of 2's, 3's, and 5's. Reading books and stories occupied most of our time. A number in our class read fifty book through out the year. We made frequent visits to our town library where we obtained some very good books. Our goal in spelling was to see how many could make perfect scores every week. On the average twenty spelling papers had perfect scores on Friday. Our enrollment for the year is as follows: Gene Blough Dean Bremiser Ielon Buchtel Bobby Cole jerry Cripe Fannie Mae Cross Rosa Cross Charles Eash Donna Mae I-lershberger Richard Hooley Ruth Hostetler Lorraine Kauffman Vernon Kauffman Charles Lamond Ernest Lehman Mary Louise Lehman Larry Linton Harlan McCreary Stella Micern Ioyce Mockler Albertis Michem Duane Mishler Anna Miller Betty Lou Miller Jesse Miller Lester Dean Miller Doris Oesch Iose Anna Tressler Owen Troyer Lydia Mae Wierich Barbara Sue Yoder Ellen Yoder Marlene Yoder Marvin Yo der Ella Thomas Rudy Miller Lavlna Hershberger Philip Troyer Gayle Albert Allen Dean Splecher SECOND GRADE Last September, at the beginning of school, there were forty- five boys and girls in the second grade. All these pupils had attended Middlebury school the year before. During the first month of school three new pupils entered from Griner Schoolg Lucy Shetler, Betty Bontrager, and Mervin Hershberger. In the second month of school Verba Miller and Leo Pittman moved away while Lucy Bontrager and Marie Ginerich came to take their place. Later Abe and Edna Kauffman moved to Shipshewana. Since then Edna Plank has left us. Middlebury had its best day at the plate, collecting twelve hitsg several were extra base blows. Wakarusa was held to one lone hit by Holdeman in the fourth inning. Be Miller and Hostetler were starting moundsmeng Be Miller, however, was relieved by Cripe, and Anthony finished the game for Wakarusa. The Middies suffered their only League defeat on September 18, when Iimtown defeated Middlebury 1-O in a hard-fought game. Middle- bury collected three hits off Doty, and Iimtown got four off Hostetler. Middlebury played a good ball game but could not come through in the clutch. Middlebu.ry's chief foe, Jimtown, had a good ball club built around their ace pitcher, Jim Doty. The turning point of the League came in the second game with Iim- town, in which we won by a score of 3-2. Iimtown and Middlebury both needed this game to stay in the race, and it was a pitching duel with Iimtown getting the most hits, six to Middlebury's three. Middlebury, however, bu.nched two Walks and a hit in the fifth inning. Then with two out, Bob Stutz slammed a long double to right field to clear the bases and save the day for Middlebury and the game for Hostetler, the Middy hurler On October 12, 1945, the Middies clinched the 1945-46 baseball crown by shutting out Concord on the home diamond, 8-O. The Middies took advantage of several Concord errors to total in eight runs on only three hits off Concord moundsman, Gegax. Hostetler, Middy hurler, ' allowed the Minutemen a lone hit, this coming in the third inning, when Hoffman lined a single into right field. This marked the return of the County Baseball Crown to Middlebury after having lost it to Iimtown the previous year. Middlebury now has Won the baseball crown four out of the last five yaars, a record to which future Middy baseball players mary aspire. 0 1 4 lg,- ff? v 'Ex If f mi N X -J L !!:.... 5, IIIYIII .- ll -- !!!!!E!!!L , . l!l!-Ql- 1 .
