All inail, 132 Elnllg Zluntnral 5553 all thanks that the KALEiDoscoPE turns ,gi me up, in this year of grace l9l6, sweet Six- -'ii teen, and sweeter SEVENTEEN. Preparation, cooperation, operation, ra- tion, express the proper sequence and necessary 'Ax' ' 'AJ result to be attained in this work-a-day world. College teaches us to marshal our intellect- ual resources, to concentrate mental energy, to study and think me- thodically, scientifically and intensely, it teaches us, also, to work together, emphasizes fraternity, inspires love and loyalty and gives the proper mental attitude towards life's responsibilities. The cul- ture, the amenities, the philosophies, the artistic research and the en- joyments of life are necessarily subordinate while ambitious energy is toiling for living needs, but are of paramount importance as soon as sufficient financial reserve is accumulated for proper protection to oneself ancl one's dependents. Humanity recognizes no stronger tie than maternal love, and Alma Mater proximates the mother of the lireside in her hold upon her sons and daughters. You will lind this a supporting and con- soling truth at all times, and you will find, also, as the curriculum of life hurries you toward your last semesters, that the old associations. the old ties and the old loves grip you with bonds of growing strength, albeit with greater tenderness. What more natural than that one should yield to college associates a full measure of love and yield to the college itself the fullest measure of support? May the choicest mundane treasure, And happiness galore, And blessings in full measure, Be your portion evermore. A. BARTON I-IEPBURN. February 21, l9l6. 8
