The CLASS OF 1951 Proudly Presents The M NITUR MIDDLEB URG HIGH SCHOOL MIDDLEB URG, PENNS YL VANIA . . . Dedication. . . We the class of 1951, dedicate this volume of The Monitor to: MRS. JOHN SCHINDLER Mrs. Schindler has been our able advisor and friend during our six years at M. H. S. It is hard to describe the loyalty and confidence she has shown in us. When trouble approached, she was always around to give us advice and en- couragement. Through her cheerfulness and impartiality she has proved to ge a true friend to all. She has done her very best for us, and we shall try to do ours. -'ii M lla-- We also dedicate The Monitor to our former classmates, who are in the Armed Services. They are - Claude Hartman, Carson Morris, Marlin CBullyJ Walter, and Larry CSkinnerJ Heintzelman. Claude was the first one to leave and he chose the Navy. He was always popular with the girls as well as the boys. We will always remember him for his friendly smile. Carson left next and he chose the Army. He was usually teasing the girls and liked to play hookey occasionally. He had a friendly personality and was liked by all. Bully enlisted in the Army and is now in Korea. He was always joking and brightened up all dull moments. We will always remember him for his cheerfulness and nice personality. Skinner left us at the end of our Junior year to join the Army. He was usu- ally seen joy-riding at noon and was always willing to chauffer girls. He had a nice personality and was a friend to all. CLAUDE CARSON MARLIN LARRY l ww-rams' . The class of '51 entered high school with a total of 40 members on our roll and we certainly were lost for about a week, but we finally digested some of the rules and regulations and settled down to work. Our first activity in our Freshman year was the Get-Acquainted So- cial which was held September 17 , 1947. Thus, eager to start our activit- ies, we elected our class officers. We we-re proud to have as our sponsors Mrs. Sara Schindler and Miss Mary Bowersox. We started our Sophomore year feeling much more confident than we did our previous year. We were very sorry not to see Miss Bowersox back with us. During this year, our class held many activities. Our biggest event was our Thanksgiving Dance with music furnished by Troutman's Orchestra. We began our Junior year with a bang! Our functions were varied and many, beginning with a Halloween Dance on October 31, 1949. A few weeks later came an important event of our high school career, the selec- tion of our class rings. After a bit of arguing be decided to order them from the Union Emblem Company. We also sold Peanut Crunch and choc- olate candy, which was one of our money making projects. Our class play, Crazy House, was an outstanding event and attended by many. Then on May 10, 1950, our Junior Prom was one of the most beautifully decor- ated and well-attended proms in the mistory of M. H. S., with music fur- nished by Howard Gale and his Orchestra. Our many thanks to every- one who helped make our dance a great success. We also received our pen- nants, dinks, and emblems at the end of our Junior year. Returning to M. H. S. for our Senior year, we were greatly disappointed not to see some of our former classmates. We now have a total of 31 in our class. Our first activity was to elect new officers- James Kreighbaum was elected presidentg Samuel Osgood, Jr., vice president, Margaret Treaster, secretary, Miriam Herman, treasurer. We presented our class play, Aunt Cathie's Cat, on November 17, 1950. During the Christmas Holidays, we held our annual Alumni Dance with music furnished by Mel Arter and his Orchestra. Then came the thoughts of graduation-graduation pictures, name cards, invitations, class colors, class motto, and class flower. We again found a very compe- tent leader in Mrs. Schindler, as she guided us through the last of our four hard years of high school. As this yearbook goes to press, we are thinking and planning of those last events at M. H. S., the J unior-Senior Prom, Graduation, and most of all, our trip to the big city of New York. Thanks again to everyone who has helped to make our days in Middle- burg High School happy and successful. 18 4 ,L . We sponsored a Halloween Masquerade Dance for the Student Body on October 27, 1950. The music was furnished by The Collegiansf' and the dance was enjoyed by all. The Sale of Peanut Crunch and Mints was a tremendous success in the month of November. On December 6, we presented our assembly program in which the members of the class depicted the months of the year. We also paid tribute to the men in the Armed Forces by singing the Service Songs. Our Class play on March 30, was a great success because of the co-operation of the entire class. Our Junior Senior Prom was the biggest hit of our school year. Everyone en- joyed himself and we are all looking forward to our Senior year at M. H. S. We wish the present Seniors lots of luck in the future. 20 N f if-59 if 555. 644 'il- gk. 1' ' -f ,.,':, f 1 'zass .1 FIRST Row--J. Avkley, E. Amboy. N. D1-umhullm-. J. -d1.Eb.NTf' x i Fisher, L. Our portrayal of the Jolly Jerry Body Snatchers won us a third prize of 35. Our party the week of Thanksgiving with games and refreshments was a great success. At our assembly program with the F. F. A. and F. H. A. we pre- sented a one act play, His First Shave. This play, along with Make Room for Rod- ney, another one act play, was given in an evening performance for the public. We re- ceived many favorable comments and added some fine gate receipts to our treasury. We were proud to have had such an activity. Once again we entered M. H. S. This time as eighth graders. We had a new adviser, Mr. Tanner. At the Student Council party we presented a scene in a gambling casino. Our float, an Indian scene, won second prize in the Halloween Parade for being the sec- ond most funny float. Our class party on December 1, 1950, with movies, games and refreshments, was a great success. We presented our assembly Thursday, February 22, with an amateur hour, playlet about Washington's later life, and The Valley Forge Jamboree. The Eighth Grade is looking forward to four more happy years in M. H. S. Seventh Grade lass History The Seventh Grade began this academic school year with thirty-four pupils under the sponsorship of Miss Jane L. Stoddard. During the year we added two new students which now makes an enrollment of thirty-six students. The Seventh Graders have participated in the various school activities. They pre- sented a skit, The Little Red School House, for the Student Founcil party early in the fall. They were pleased to think that they won second prize. ln the Halloween Parade they won a prize for 9525.00 for their Peter, Peter Pumpkin Eaten' Float. They also enjoyed putting on a Thanksgiving Assembly for the student body. The Seventh Grade wishes the seniors the best of luck in their future years. -MMP- l msT Row---Miss Stoddard, Advisor: G. Especially when two refined maiden ladies with their two attractive nieces and dumb-dora maid decide to rent the place unaware that anything mysterious is going on. When the real estate agent takes his prospective renters over the house to show it, two queer, rough- looking men scurry across the stage carrying the bloody-faced body of a man. A strange white-faced woman dressed in black appears on the stairway, but disappears wheen she hears people coming. The ladies decide to move in at once. And then the excitement begins. One of the nieces is alone in the living room reading on the sofa when the black-clothed woman appears and advances to- ward her stealthily. The girl screams and faints. Her aunts rush in but fail to find the intruder. Bill Pryor - - Miss Jane Trimble Miss Cathie Trimble Margaret Trimble CAST Dorothy Trimble - - Marcia Garcia - Jose Garcia - A Gas Man An Officer - - Mr. David Brent Elizabeth Pryor Tilly Pitts - Miss Walker .L8 Miss Cathie decides to go down into the cellar to feed her pet cat which she had put there when they first came. She fails to return. Groans are heard. The cat caterwauls. A policeman is sent for. He goes down and brings up the unconscious form of Miss Cathie who has received a blow on her head. He reports hav- ing seen a grave. Pandemonium breaks out. Who is going to be murdered? Finally at the height of their terror, the solution comes and the whole mysterious business is cleared up. A romance develops between one of the nieces and the personable young realtor. But more sur- prising than anything is another, unforseen romance which is disclosed at the end. - - Bill Mauser - Helen Hassinger - Beverly Metten Phyllis Hornberger Nancy Lee Hermann - Eleanor Benner - Gary Snyder - - Lloyd Ernest - - Sonny Osgood Jimmie Kreighbaum -, Madeline Walter - Margaret Treaster - Leonore Arbogast Play Snaps J -1325? l Emi. i f Q55 3-fmi 2 ww sn-4 -Si? -I is, ,lv35,' , I X Junior Class Play - Class of 1951 CRAZY HOUSE CAST OF CHARACTERS Mrs. Asphasia Beldinker - - - Bee Beldinker - See Beldinker - Laura - - Grandma Dimity Aay Beldinker - Jonathan Q. We, the class of '51 will try throughout our lives to do this very thing. Most of us will never see our statues in a Hall of Fame , but we may all direct our steps toward another great place, the Hall of Fame of the Unsung Great. Here we will meet soldiers who suffered at Valley Forge, pioneer mothers who helped to carve out an empire in the west, men who gave themselves to scientific research, as the experiments of Walter Reed. The main work of the world is, after all, done by those whose names are not blazed abroad by fiery light. A pedestal is moreover an uncertain and isolated position. Many having attained the top have found it very slippery, so We won't feel too disappointed if we cannot climb the dizzy heights. We will continue to climb by faithfulness, perserverance, enthu- siasm, truth, courage, and by meeting with a smile the obstacles that try to make this gay old world go astray. In this way we hope to become honorable citizens in a world society, and We will continue to believe that, if we cannot do great things, we can do small things in a great way! 63 BOOSTERS -..gl M fy.- Jackie and Letha Spigelmyer Gale Ann Saylor Sally Ann Hartman Mr. and Mrs. Harry Klose Judy Kay and Calvin Spigelmyer Timothy A.
