Seely as principal was em ployed, Latin and Algebra were added to branches heretofore taught. ln 1899 the grade school building was erected and the former building was abandoned. The new building was a modern structure containing four rooms, only three of which were occupied. ln l 905 an attempt was made to have the school recognized as a Third Grade High School, and in the Spring of i908 the first class was graduated under Prof. T. A. Stetler. At,the close of this term Prof. Stetler was elected County Superintendent which office he held until February l924, at the time of his demise. The school was now recognized as a Third Grade High School, and in the fjl of l908 a fourth teacher was employed and all the rooms were oc- cupie . On May 27, 1916 an election was held for the purpose of bonding the district to the amount of l0,000, to be used to acquire property, erect and equip a High School building. The result ofthe election was three to one in favor of abond issue, and a site was selected and a letting held but it was found that the money available was about three thousand dollars short of the sum required and the project had to be abandoned for the time being. August 191 6, a Hfth teacher was employed and the Grammar School was moved to Bowersox Hall. ln the spring of 191 7, Swineford petitioned for admission to the Borough, and that fall the Swineford building was occupied by the High School. ln l9l8 a sixth teacher was employed and the school was reorganized as a Second Grade High School. ln the fall of 1923 an additional room was erected to the Swineford building and a seventh teacher was employed so as to comply with the require- ments of the State Code to be recognized as a First Grade High School. Tuesday, April 22, l924, the matter for bonding the District for 3s45,000, was submitted to the electors with the result of a vote of 244 to l l 7 in favor of the increase of indebtedness. The new building was rushed to completion by Albert Boyer of North- umberland, as contractor and F. Stetler and Son as Architects. An eighth teacher was employed in the fall of l924. The new building was occupied January 4th, l925. ln the fall of i925 a ninth teacher was employed and the school was recognized as a Firt Grade High School. Eight acres and forty-nine and a half perches of the ground on which the building was located was bought and paid for by W. A. Hassinger, R. Kreeger, G. E.. Barnes and the heirs of M. K. Schoch, at a cost of S297I,78, and was deeded to the school district of the borough. April l7, I926 one acre and 148 perches of ground was purchased from Duck 8: Troxell for Sl,00O. This addition joins the former on the east and was bought so as to have the building in the centre of the plot. On the same day the Middleburg Chamber of Commerce offered to complete the road from the State road to the north of the building, and have the building lettered so as to designate it as the Middleburg High School, which generous offer was accepted at a meeting of the Board, May 4, l926. The value of the present building and site is upwards of 355,000.00 There are I0 acres and 37 l-2 perches in the school site. 8 RIOR to l 897 the Middleburg schools consisted of two grades, namely sillllllmllllit - - ' - - - ' -
