AA LTR RR DIDO ER AV 7474 WAV QW WANYAVANTQ WANNA: a i is Che Class Histon They had told me I must prophesy, But I knew not what to do, For I was not born a prophet, Any more than one of you; I had spent the day in study, And in thinking, hard and deep, So I now, all worn and weary, Lay me down and fell asleep. I had lain there but a moment In that slumber, calm and sweet, When I rose, refreshed and strenghened, And stepped out upon the street; But I very soon discovered That I was in a strange place, For I saw not one known figure, Nor an old familiar face. I was in a mammoth city, By the side of which I knew That New York, the nation’s glory, Would stand but a feeble show; Great skyscrapers all about me; Aeroplanes through all the air; Wonders far beyond conception Here and there and everywhere! I could scarce believe my senses When I saw the airship line Bore the well-known name of “Middleburg,” While the same gleamed from each sign; And my eyes were opened wider, And shock went through my mind, When I saw a slip of paper Dated 1969. While I puzzled o’er this problem, Staring ’round with open eyes, Looking for some one to question Of this marvelous surprise, I beheld near me a lady, Coming on with footsteps slow, And I thought I would accost her And learn what I wished to know. As she came to be still nearer, I thought I had seen that face, Somewhere else, yet could not put it In exactly its right place; But at last she stood before me, And all wonder vanished quite; ‘Twas my old chum, Anne Harton, And I met her with delight. Said I had been long away, And gave me an invitation To remain with her that day. Her kind offer I accepted, And she hailed a flying car, Which we boarded, skimming swiftly Through the ether, fast and far; I watched the conductor closely- ‘Twas a lady, short and stout, Fully able to assist the Passengers step in or out. As she took my fare she knew me, And stood pointing out strange sights- Betty Jane Kearson thus had proven Her beliefs in Woman’s Rights! On the car a dude was sitting, Toying with a poodle small,- Why, ’twas Bobby Paschall! I scarcely Would have known the man at all. Soon we flitted past a corner That looked like old times to me, For it was the well-known corner Where our High School used to be! Now the place was changed to show a Factory, twenty stories high; And I noticed a small fish-stand There, as we were passing by. And behind the greasy counter Stood a man I knew at sight; Yes, for it was Fred Hendrick, Shouting, “Fish!” with all his might. I looked out at him in wonder, For whoever would have thought That our old-time Brilliant president Could to such a task be brought. But the whole day brought surprises; Helen Watkins was dancing on the stage; Marilyn Watkins was an opera singer; Wilson Fleming a preacher, quite the rage; Roy Boykin a soldier; James Watkins, an author; Sherene, an old maid, prim and neat; Mary Ann Abbott grown so very heavy, Anti-Fat was all she’d eat. | ” 1 YN GIN GIN GN GANONG O NOINGING) NYNGNG NONGTINGIN NDING ZA, ; : a) heheh Pee a ii ks onion te tenns ee cieaincent — on adititetesen hen ce Bitte oe eee - a meh er. oh, Gee. ae iad _ Rie van A pelea a sie = ie ane RN etree Sm sr tearetiaimay mat P NR tee a ny eRe Ae ap San iad ee nC . rae -. ae e - oe ee ee eer penta Oe a eae ee en a ee lie et ee ee Agere mes. Bye and bye we reached the home where Anne Spain lived-her husband too, But he was a traveling salesman, So I didn’t find out who! I was very tired and sleepy, So I felt that it was best To withdraw myself a little For an hour or two of rest. I slept long and very soundly, And just judge of my surprise - When again, after my slumber, I opened my drowsy eyes, I found myself in the cottage I had lived in long ago, Ere I started out that morning On that curious quest to go. I sprang up and sought the window: Yes, it was the same old town, That, in what seemed years ago, I had wearily lain down; But the dream had been so life-like, ‘That e’en yet I could not feel That the vision I had witnessed Could be otherwise than real. So you see, dear friends and classmates, That ’twas nothing but a dream I’ve been telling, howe’er natural And real it to you must seem; But in this old world of wonders, Dreams have often-times come true, So, who knows but this, my vision, May be realized by you? And first we do direct that our funeral services shall be conducted by our friends and well-wishers, our principal and his all-wise and ever-com- petent faculty, who have been our guardians for so long, only asking, as the last injunction of the dying, that the funeral be carried on with all the dignity and pomp that our worth, our merit, our attainments, and our posi- tions as Seniors of “grave and reverend mien,” must certainly have deserv- ed. The following may seem but trifling bequests, but we hope they may be accepted not as worthless things, lavishly thrown away because we can no longer keep them, but as assets to those who may receive them, and a continual reminder of the generosity of heart displayed in our free and full bestowal. We trust they will also feel at perfect liberty to make us of all such bits of wisdom and enlightenment for the education of the classes to come after us. This, of course, is left entirely to their personal discretion. The subjoined list will be recognized as entailed estates, to which we do declare the Class of 1950 the real rightful successors. First: Our seats in the classroom. May the incoming Senior Class en- deavor to fill them as advantageously, as promptly, as we have done. Second: Our Senior dignity. May the next Senior Class uphold it for- ever with all seriousness and gravity, endeavoring to realize its vast import- ance in spite of their natural light mindedness and irresponsibility. Third: Any stub pencils, erasers, or scraps of paper that we may leave in the excitement and haste of going away. Last comes the one thing hard for us to part with. To our successors we must leave our places in the hearts and thoughts of our principal and teachers. The faculty will love them, unworthy as we feel they are, even as they loved us. We trust that the Class of 1950 will appreciate all this asi deeply as we have. OWN TANTO NANTON ANAVION Besides these enforced gifts, we leave-not of necessity, but of our own free will-our blessing, tender memories of our pleasant associations to- gether, and our forgiveness for anything that we may not have exactly appreciated in the demonstrations of the past and a pledge of friendship from henceforth and forever. We do hereby constitute and appoint Mr. Young sole executor of this, our last will and testament. a In witness whereof, we, the Class of 1949, the testators, have to this our will, written on one sheet of parchment, set our hands and seal this’ second day of June, one thousand nine hundred and forty-nine A. And as they entered into this land they were greeted with warm wel- comings and made known unto them was their first instructor, Miss Frances Pittard. And it came to pass, as they advanced in this journey, that their minds began to feel the touch of knowledge, and their bodies grew and became of great strength. In passing through the next seven years in that land they were instructed by the following leaders of knowledge: Miss Nancy White, Miss Thelma Duncan, Miss Bessie Atkinson, Miss Nannie Burt, and Miss Winnie Burt. And as they dwelt long in this land, they fell in with the customs of the inhabitants thereof, and their strangeness wore away, and they each became as one among the rest. They were joined by Edna Poythress and Roy Boykin during the sixth year of their journey and they were considered as one among the others. Now it came to pass there entered in this land five bodies from the the land of Drewey. Those bodies being Anne Spain, Mary Anne Abbott, Helen Watkins, Wilson Fleming, and James Watkins. These were made as one among the others. The instructors this year were Miss Margaret Sharpe, Miss Mary Darden, Miss Bernice Odom, Miss Nannie Burt. And all this came to pass during the eighth year of their journey. And at the end of the eighth year they were looked upon and werd favored by a glorious graduation, whereupon they were presented diplomas as the reward for their work. They were now prepared for their work in the great land of High School. And it came to pass that they entered this great land of High School and were known as “Freshmen.” And they were treated by the other three tribes of this land. The names of these tribes were “Sophomores,” “Juniors,” and “Seniors.” And these tribes welcomed them and offered in this land their service to them. And there entered in this land a body by the name of Sherene Breland, and she was welcomed and made one of them. And so it was that Martha King saw that she should leave this land of Middleburg and advance toward the land of Henderson. But that was not good and she returned to the land of Middleburg. The instructors for this year were Miss Bernice Odom, Mrs. G.. W. Pernell, Miss Theta Jackson, Miss Willie Pritchard, and Mr. G. B. Blum. And behold another year had been spent in this land and they advanced into the tenth year of the land of learning and they were blessed by furth- er knowledge. And it came to pass that during this year they took another trip to the city of Raleigh and everyone was happy. And that instructing them this year were Miss Willie Pritchard, Mr. E. O. Young, Jr., and Mrs. G. W. Per- nell. And it came to pass that this tribe was also given the name of “Juniors,” and this took place during the eleventh year of their journey. And they were joined by Robert H. Paschall, Jr. (better known as Bobby), and he was made one of them And in this year they held a great feast for the tribe known as the “Seniors,” and there was feasting and shouting, and everyone was merry. And it came to pass that during this year the “Juniors” took a trip to that great city of Washington, D. C. and all the historic spots were seen. The instructors for this year were Mr. E. O. Young, Jr., Mrs. Mary McColl, Miss Mary Jean Gross, Miss Barbara Rudd, and Mr. G. B. Blum. And there departed from this class three bodies: Betty Anne Brame, Glenn Breedlove, and Eddie Faulkner to find greener pastures elsewhere. Now this, the last year in the history of this great and wonderful Class of Nine-and-Forty has been one of much hard labor, for preparations have been making ready for them to take their final departure from this land. And it came to pass that during this year a great preformance was given in the school auditorium, the name of it being, “Cyclone Sally.” and there was a large host of people who came to view this preformance and every- thing was well. And behold, this tribe known as the “Seniors” journeyed to that city of Chapel Hill and saw the play by the the title of “Macbeth,” and thus more knowledge was bestowed upon them. And it came to pass that a great banquet was held for them by the “Junior” tribe and there was much feasting and everyone was filled with glee Now we come to the end of that history of the Class of Forty-and-Nine. And it came to pass that out of the twenty-and-five that began their jour- ney twelve years ago only sixteen of the original number are left. Joyce Wright came up from the Junior class, making seventeen. Twelve years hath the Class of Forty-and-Nine so journeyed in the land and gathered in large portions the fruit from the Tree of Knowledge. Now I say unto you, they must depart thence, to go each a separate way, to lands they know not of, to do, they know not what. Thus endeth the Chronicles of the illustrious Class of Forty-and-Nine.
