Students Take Over On December 3, 1987, seventeen Middle Township seniors participat- ed in the annual Youth Appreciation Day. Sponsored by the Optimist Club, Youth Appreciation Day pro- vides high school students an oppor- tunity to become better acquainted with their local government and their school administration. Each student represented a differ- ent official for the entire day. Acting as Mayor was Reynold Wang, Com- mitteeman, Amelia Spaulding, Com- mitteeman, Margaret Hsieh, Town- ship Clerk, Allison Harveyg Treasur- er, Bill Watson, County Clerk, Chris- tine Heck, Tax Collector, Delia Adri- ang Construction Official, Harry Wo- zunkg Police Chief, Chris Chase, Ad- ministrative Assistant, Laurie Weimerg Recreation Department, Scott Suppleeg Superintendent of Schools, Angela Dell'Oreficeg Assis- tant Superintendent, Abby Fagan, High School Principal, Ron Hudan- ichg Assistant Principals, Michele Jost and Christin Dodd. The students accompanied their counterparts throughout their daily routines to familiarize themselves with the responsibilities of the var- ious positions. All the participants were treated to lunch at the Avalon Country Club. That evening, the acting Mayor, Committeemen, and Township Clerk presided over the weekly Township Meeting. This proved to be an historic event, for it also happened to be the first time the newly constructed court room had been used. Youth Appreciation Day emerged a political and educational success. The students agreed that they had fun engaging in this learning exper- ience. This was indeed a memorable, firsthand exposure to the world of government, one that the students can certainly boast of later in life.
