Tmmrmmm AO Pi Rock-A-Thon No, it wasn ' t a heavy metal, party-down, happenin ' event like the name may seem to indicate. Members of AOPi literally rocked in rocking chairs for the $580 they donated to Arthritis research. The Roommate Game The Grill Annex was the scene of scandal and raised eyebrows during Residence Hall Week. J and K apart- ments sponsored the Room- mate Game, an offbeat ver- sion of the Newlywed Game. Roommates were asked to evaluate their roomies ' last date (we found out some of us hadn ' t had a date in a long time), expose who had a crush on who, and what one really did before bedtime. There were a few names called but it was evident from the screams and kicks that everyone had a good time. These people make up our student body... worse yet, one of them could be your next roomie.. .God forbid! Pike Fights The Pike Fights provided en- tertainment for over one thousand fans. There was enough screaming and yelling that they could have been pro- fessional fights. Anyway, they were a good way to let off steam as the dreaded week of final exams approached. The winners on Fight Night were: James Sparks, Ronnie Lee, Donald Sandars, Billy Davis, Eric Fisk, Glen Farris, Darryl Amason, Derek De- pasco, David Key, Ricky Bin- gham, Tim Swarts, Joey Mul- loy, and Eric Womsley. Miss MTSU The Miss MTSU pageant, won by Miss Dari Anne Tarbuk and spon- sored by Sigma Beta Epsilon, drew over one thousand people to see some of the most beautiful and talented women on campus. Also included in the event was the much anticipated appearance of Miss America Kellye Cash. Miss Tarbuk, sponsored by Delta Zeta, won not only the pageant but the Most Talented award as well, singing Somewhere Over The Rainbow. Rachel Fisher won the award for most congenial. Mr. MTSU Outrageous! There ' s no other way to de- scibe the Mr. MTSU pageant. Alaino Delllues won the event which was sponsored by the Chi Omega sorority. The contestants kept the crowd of about 600 on the edge of their seats from beginning to end. During the modeling of casual clothes, one contestant came out wearing a T-shirt and a towel! The formal wear competition went smoothly, but after ten finalists were chosen, things got crazy again. The final part of the competition seemed at first to be simple and not at all unusual. Each of the ten finalists chose a question from a hat. Easy, right? Well, answering an im- promptu question in front of 600 people is hard. Especially when the questions aren ' t the average What do you want to do with your life? questions. One that was posed to a lucky finalist was, If you were a mixed drink, what would you be and why? The contestant responded that he would be a Long Island Tea. Why? It ' s well worth the money. It goes down smooth, and it hits just the right spot. Isn ' t that exactly what you would have said? The Piano Man If you think Billy Joel is just a shy. quiet, piano man. you definately didn ' t see him during The Bridge Tour. During his concert here at MTSU. Joel demonstrated the mus- ical ability and versatility (Sur- prise! He plays guitar!) that made him a star. Joel opened up his show with A Matter Of Trust from his latest album. He played a guitar during this song, but when the Pressure was on he moved to his trusty piano. Ir) fact, he was constantly moving during the entire show- from piano to keyboards and back again. Unlike most performers. Joel played many songs from his older albums. Among these were Inno- cent Man. Allentown. Captain Jack. and. of course. Piano Man. Modern Woman. Now Is The Time To Remember. and Baby Grand were some of the songs Joel played off The Bridge. He dedicated Baby Grand to Ray Charles, who re- corded the song with him. Because Joel is so talented and personable, his show was a huge success. He returned four times for encores. After the last one. he spoke some memorable words. He told the audience. If you re drunk, don t drive. Do what I do-call a limo. And whatever you do. don ' t take no shit from nobody! What a guy! Comic Week was full of.. .uh... comics! Yeah, that ' s it. What better to fill a week with than with comics? Espe- cially when that week hap- pens to include April Fool ' s Day. First of all, there was the We Can Make You Laugh game. Three comedians drew Comic Weak names of students in the audi- ence to participate in a contest to see wiio could hold their giggles in. If the contestant could face each comedian ' s two minute routine, he or she would win $25. It sounded like a pretty easy task and a quick way to make a few bucks, but only three of the five contes- tants survived the ordeal with- out so much as a grin. Last were the Comic Kazes, whose motto was We ' ll make you laugh or we ' ll kill ourse- lves. They did skits, impres- sions, stand-up comedy, and of course their act was full of comedian vocabulary. !$ %£! SprsRO ys. The Summer Stretch - v v{i ' S IV On Friday, May 1 , 1 987, a dedica- tion ceremony was held for the Wikswo Telescope. The telescope was donated to MTSU this year by Mrs. John Wikswo, Sr. for the use of astronomy students. It was was made by John Wikswo, Sr. between 1949 and 1970. From left: Jay Pasachoff-Director of the Hop- kins Observatory; John Wikswo, Jr.-Dept. of Physics and Astronomy, Vanderbilt; Mrs. John Wikswo, Sr.; Roy Clark-Master of Cere- monies; Dan Scott-Chairman of Chemistry and Physics, MTSU. The Reckless The Warrior Bryan Adams brought his Into the Fire tour to Murphy Center as the final concert of the spring semester. Adams driving style had the near sellout crowd on the edge of their seats throughout the concert. Familiar songs like It s Only Love and This Time were heard along with new songs such as Victim of Love and Heat of the Night. The concert came to an end with the singing of Summer of 69 in the second encore. Patti Smythe. former lead singer of Scandal, opened for Adams. She belted out her new songs, includ- mg Never Enough, and old Scan- dal tunes like Warrior. Left: Pattie Smythe jolted the crown with her forceful rendition of the Warrior. In 1987, the writing lab and math lab merged to form one program. Dr. Bader, the program ' s new director, says that it is designed to help students who are not quite prepared for the college cir- riculum immediately after high school. Students have to earn a C or better to pass their Developmental Studies class. Psychosexual Adjustment In 1972, in an effort to increase course offerings in the psychology de- partment, a survey was conducted among teachers to determine what classes should be added. One of the most frequent response was Human Sexuality. Since there were objec- tions to this name, it was changed to Psychosexual Adjustment. Dr. Jeanette Heritage was selected as coordinator of the course. It deals with homosexuality, the way sexuality is viewed in other cultures, and at- titudes, behavior, and myths about human sexuality. Psychosexual Ad- justment has become one of the most popular electives on campus. Cruisin ' Campus On Two Wheels A o®o ©o® RUSH 1987 Freshman Talent Show The New Student Talent Show, sponsored by the ASB, was hosted as the last event during New Student Week. Student Life, Student Prog- ramming, and ARA Food Services all assisted in promoting the Welcome Week for freshmen. Duran Duran Duran Duran brought their Strange Behavior 1987 tour to Starwood on July 18 with Erasure, who opened the concert. Erasure, deemed as ■ Madonnas favorite group by the announcer, performed homosexually oriented songs. The group seemed approp- riate in relation to the tours theme. Once Erasure exited, the stage darkened and the sound of a heart beating announced the arrival of Duran Duran. They broke into the theme song from the James Bond movie A View To A Kill. The ASB is structured much like the United States government; with a house, a senate, a president, two speakers, student courts and many other students, all of whom ex- press the opinion of the student body. The ASB ' s responsibilities include ap- pointments of students to university committees, student activities during the h omecoming celebration, the an- nual charity Chili Cook-Off, and ap- pointment of an executive cabinet and student judiciary positions. studio B Recording Industry Management Students now have a second studio to record in. Studio B, located on the first floor of the James Union Building, is the newest development in the Mass Communications Department. The project cost approximately $400,000. In addition to having more advanced equipment than Haynes House, the studio has digital capabilities as well as recording hook-up with the Tenn- essee Room. The long, hot sutiimet o( 1987 threatened to get even hotter on July 4 when the Ku Kliix Klan staged a rally on the downtown square. Also present, how- ever, was the Rainbow Coalition, who rep- resented more reasonable thinkers of all races countered Prominent among the lafter group and looking on were MTSU students, who carried signs and ban- ners repudiating Klan activity in Murfreesboro. As the 10 am march time approached, armed pat- rolmen appeared on the rooftop of virtually every downtown building At the urging of city fathers, most citizens stayed home. Those who came--re- porters. photographers the curiOLis--milled quietly about, waiting Klan members-male and female, parents and chil- dren-gathered in the City Hall parking lot. On the square, their opposites joined in songs of commu- nity and patriotism. As the Klan marched toward the square, shouting their angry slogans, police moved the crowds back. The white-cloaked marchers circled the square twice, and their leader ascended a platform to speak. Savage used a combination of music, dance, costume changes, and stage effects to present his unique experience. He spent most of the two hour presentation interacting with the audience by talking and dancing with them. At one point he encouraged everyone to be himself, and they did. The crowd responded by slam dancing, singing, and invariably necking in the corner. Employing a variety of musical genres. Savage spiced up his con- cert dance by starting up a chain- saw and handling large snakes onstage. The evening was definitely a Sav- age Experience! The appearance of Lord Hailsham was particularly special since he is a direct decendant of Captain William Lytle, who fouded Murfreesboro. Lord Hailsham was invited to Mur- freesboro by the Rutherford County Bicentenial Commission as part of a four phase plan to further understand- ing of the Constitution. ASB During the Founder ' s Day celebration, John Bragg of the Tennessee House of Representatives presented Associated Student Body President Holly Lentz with the original copy of the ASB Con- stitution. Homecoming Director Rob Marlin said that Rep. Bragg was sorting through his personal files and came upon the original copy. One point of interest in the original ASB Constitu- tion is Article III., Section 4 which reads, If the President of the ASB is a man, then the Vice Pres- ident shall automatically be a woman, and vice versa. ■ r 1 1 ■ 1 Wj ' 3 K HH ■J ■iJr, m 1 L ■ Mi N 1 1 l l n b- ■i ■■ iHI ■■ ' ' ' ■ -id ■k — Alpha Eta Rho and the Flying Raiders A fly-in and open house were held at the John C. Ferguson also played many familiar tunes such as Birdland, Gonna Fly Now (Theme from Rocky), and Star- dust. The Maynard Ferguson concert was sponsored by the Special Events Com- mittee. RUGBY CLUB The MTSU Rugby Club was founded in 1980 to provide a social and athletic outlet for university students. The club is unique because of it ' s dual nature: it is both athletic and social. The club does not hold tryouts or cut any players. Anyone who wants to play is welcome. The players are unique for the same reasons: they are as committed to having fun as they are to outstanding athletics. Anyone who has attended a rugby party can attest to this fact. In fact, the party is as much a part of rugby as the game. The home team traditionally hosts a party for the visiting team at which the players can get to know each other, sing traditional rugby songs, and talk over the exciting points of the game. Although the Rugby Club represents MTSU, it is not funded or sponsored by the university, and is self-governing. The club is proud, as well as protective, of its autonomous nature. Rugby is not NCAA sanctioned, but has its own established hierarchy. MTSU is in the Mid-South conference along with the University of Tennessee, Tennessee Tech, Vanderbilt, Old Miss, Rhodes College and Memphis State. A crowd of over 30,000 was on hand for the game. The Blue Raiders posted a lopsided 55-19 victory in a game that was built up to be a defensive showcase. How- ever, MTSU took the opening kickoff and marched 64 yards in ten plays to take a 7-0 lead. From that point the Raiders never looked back as they scored on seven of their first eight offensive posses- sions, rolling up a 42-7 half-time edge. MTSU added two second half touchdowns to close out the scoring. Sophomore place-kicker Joe Lisle turned in a gem of a game. Lisle, play-, ing in his first collegiate football game, booted two field goals and added sev- en extra points to the score. Record performances were turned in by split end Robert Alford and Ger- ald Anderson. Alford broke a 22 year old school record for yards received in a game with 168 yards on six re- ceptions. Anderson tied a school record he already held with 1 1 other people by scoring three touchdowns. MTSU also set team records on of- fense. The Raider offense scored more points against TSU than any other opponent in the history of the school. They also rolled up a total of 513 yards. The audience united in song and the mood was set for the appearance of U2. WMOT Jazz enthusiasts in the middle Tennessee area are very familiar with MTSU. At 89 on the FM dial, MTSU ' s own radio station, WMOT, daily broadcasts the best in jazz. In many respects WMOT operates like any other radio station. They have a set format, up-to-date news, and all the necessary office personnel as well as DJ ' s. But WMOT is unique in that its DJ ' s are broadcast students gaining valuable experience in their field. The station is supported by funds gained through donations and listener fund-drives. This allows more airtime for music and information instead of commercials. Unlike commercial stations, WMOT DJ ' s select music from listener requests and their own jazz tastes with no inter- ference from structured playlists. One such DJ, senior Ken Carrington, is perhaps one of the most dynamic student DJ ' s. Having worked as an amateur comedian, Carrington hopes to use his tal- ents and experience for a career in broadcast audio. A long-time jazz connoisseur, Carrington tries to bring a laid-back atmosphere to his show. He started out as a late-night DJ, but has since been promoted to the morning shift. After being asked whether he preferred a late or early shift, Carrington responded with I can get in the mood anytime. He later added that after graduation he would prefer to work a late-night shift in a small renegade station so that he could really be himself. Opposite page and below: Ken Carhngton at work. The crowd cheered as Whitney Houston took the stage and belted out material from her two albums Whitney and Whitney Houston. In her opening act, Jonathan But- ler, a rising young jazz singer, sparked the audience ' s enthusiasm with his talented guitar playing and jazzy beat. Concert-goers respond- ed to Butler ' s music by clapping and dancing in the aisles. Whitney highlighted her concert by singing some of her slower melo- dies such as Saving All My Love For You, I Know Him So Well, and For The Love of You. After her last song, Whitney left the stage while her fans cheered for more. She came back for one encore, and sang her Grammy award winning song Greatest Love of All. 7. y. s: JK : y . ! . SIDELINES When a newspaper is picked up and read by someone they usually concentrate on what they ' re reading — not how it got on the page. What appears in that newspaper is put there by people. There are writers who write, photographers who take pic- tures, layout personnel who decide what goes where, editors who decide what you read, production managers who get the paper out on time and an ad staff that sells advertising space to pay expenses. All of these factors are involved in what you read every Tuesday and Friday when Sidelines comes out. The students who work for Sidelines are just that — students. They have full class loads and some- times other jobs. They work for the paper for experience in journalism, graphics or photography. Some people even work there for the fun of it. The Sidelines office is a hectic place — editors yelling, photo- graphers moaning — and everyone always seems to watching the clock. This is all done so that you can read the latest news, sports stories and movie reviews. Maybe you should think about that the next time you pick up a copy of Sidelines. Our families, our friends, the people we go to school with, work with, drink with, live with, vote with; they all make up the communities we op- erate within. Some people like to brag about how they ' ve learned to be self-reliant, or that ' 1hey don ' t need anyone else. That ' s gar- bage. We need other people. And learning to live with them, learning to form a community, is crucial. College can be an important part of that process in a mul- titude of ways. We share classrooms, dorms (sorry, residence halls), the Grill, a bench, a football field, a six-pack of Shaffer, sidewalks, television sets and copies of the Midlander with people. These people may not look like us, act like us, or even own the same skateboard as us, but we have to learn to accept their differences if we are to make the most of our college experience. The amazing thing about college is the number of different communities that manage to exist within the boundaries, both physical and theoretical, of Middle Tennessee State Univer- sity. Some of these communities are dependent on each other (fraternities and sororities, booster clubs and athletic teams). Some are opposed to their counterparts (the Young Democrats and the Young Republicans) but most just exist.. .setting up their own version of reality. As university students (or as the university staff) we have the opportunity to experience many of these communities whether they are clubs, frats, discussion groups or a bunch of drunk guys hooting down Tammy Faye Bakker on Nightline at some bar. The time spent here can be used to obtain not only a textbook education, but an education in (yep, pretentious point ahead) life (warned you). Classes are only part of a university education. Obvious, and I seem to keep saying that, but true. But the extra-cirricu- lar lives of most college students don ' t have advisors. We can only trust ourselves to get the most out of this community. And we can only trust ourselves to use what we have learned. When (maybe would be a better word) you read this, years after you ' ve left MTSU, remember some of the things you saw and felt for the first time when you were here. Burrow into your past and remember the good and the bad. Continue to call on these memories long after you ' ve forgotten the reasons for Shay ' s rebellion. Keep trying to build a better community with what you ' ve learned and keep your college education alive. Chris Bell 53 ' u W ' l«-v • ' The Year In Review The world is quite complicated at times. There are threats of war, social and political upheavals, and health related disasters. On the flip side of the serious implications of living in a fast-paced, mobile society there are laughter, friends, and the basic needs that bind us together through the very things that bring triumph and disaster. This is our year in review at Middle Tennessee State University. Someday we ' ll look back and see how far we ' ve come and realize our potential for so much more. Generations come and go but it makes no difference. The sun rises and sets and hurries around to rise again. The wind blows south and north, here and there, twisting back and forth, getting nowhere. The rivers run into the sea but the sea is never full, and the water returns again to the rivers, and flows ( ain to the sea.... Everything is unutterably weary and tiresome. No matter how much we see, we are never satisfied; No matter how much we hear, we are not content. So I saw that there is nothing better for men than that they should be happy in their work, for that is what they are here for, and no arte can bring them back to life to enjoy what wUl be in the future, so let them enjoy it now.
