The only prob- lems we have getting out of bed are due to hangovers from the night before or burning the midnight oil for the next day ' s assignments. And we complain loudly about both. But for the handicapped students at MTSU, just getting up and going to class โ€” without a nang- over โ€” is a major ordeal. Jeff Moore, for instance, has to have help getting dressed and into his walker to start the day. But he says he has no problems getting around at school โ€” that is just part of his routine. I sometimes have problems walking and getting up and down ramps, but people help you out, Jeff declared. One time I was going back to my apartment from class, and I fell and hit my head. I don ' t even remember it, but when I came to, I was in my apartment. Someone had picked me up and brought me home. I still don ' t really remem- ber what happened but that ' s what we figured out, he added. Jeff has multiple sclerosis โ€” a disease which causes a degenera- tion of the nervous system. But that does not stand in his way. Dean Stopinski has nicknamed Jeff the notdogger for the fast way he travels around campus. Even though Jeff finds writing papers a problem, he manages to keep his grade point average at 2.7. He graduated from Nashville Overton in 1976 in the top 10 of his class. An avid Blue Raider fan, Jeff attends all the home games and some of the road games. But he has a cousin who plays football at UT Martin and another who wrestles for UT Chattanooga, so his sympathies are divided at times. When he isn ' t going to sports events, Jeff enjoys going to mov- ies and to concerts. Although Jeff is a pretty inde- pendent fellow, he couldn ' t get along without his roommate Chuck Norris, whom he has known for seven years. Chuck helps Jeff get dressed and keep up with paying bills and cooking. I usually eat breakfast and lunch in the grill, Jeff said, and Chuck usually cooks supper. But Chuck doesn ' t do it all โ€” Jeff has his share of work to do. I have to do the dishes, Jeff quipped. Other than getting wet when it rains and trouble moving when it ' s snowy and icy, Jeff doesn ' t have any real problems in school. He goes to the Wesley Founda- tion once a week to eat and the geople (especially the girls, Dean topinski emphasized) there help with getting books and research done in the library. And Mary Pat Cassidy and Janice Glascock in Dean Ivan Shewmake ' s office are always available to lend a hand. Shewmake (associate dean of stu- dents โ€” men) said that most handicapped students are good students. Some suffer culture shock when they first come but after they become acclimated they have few psychological problems. Shewmake also emphasized that there were very seldom problems with teachers, especially with classroom scheduling and outside work. On occasion we have had to ask teachers to relocate a class so one of our handicapped students could attend, and the teachers are always willing to cooperate, Shewmake pointed out. We ' ve never run into a problem we couldn ' t solve โ€” yet. ' In case you ' re wondering, Jeff is majoring in social work with minors in sociology and psychol- ogy- What does he plan to do when he gets out? Like most of us, he isn ' t really sure. I ' d like to help people, perhaps some kind of counseling or probation work. I don ' t know, just anything to help people. photos by Robin Rudd From the student . by Jerry Williamson MOM. DAP. H HOME, Come on baby ... I know you aren ' t supposed to be here, but you know how small a Volkswagen is. It ' s hard to get comfortable in there. Ssh . . . don ' t wake up the dorm director. Shut the hell up out there! What the hell do you think this is โ€” a half-night motel or something? Yeah I know, I know. Just have her out by morning. Come in my dear, and welcome to my palace. You have got to be kidding. Do you mean to tell me that you have to sleep in here? I ' d rather go back to the Volkswagen. It ' s just aoout the same size. Okay . . . but this is the first and the last time I m ever stepping in this room again. ' Alright, open up . . . University Police. Give me your I.D. and get the girl out of the bathroom. Both of you report to the dean tomorrow. We ' ll take this for evidence. Hey man, put that back . . . that cost me a Quarter. Oh what do we do now? I told you that the Volkswagen was okay. The above is part of the everyday life of some MTSU students. You see, we have been assigned to differentiated housing due to trie State Board of Regents. If it were left up to the State Board of Regents and the University Rules Committee, at least 80 percent of MTSU students would be virgins on graduation day. You see freshmen and sophomores are assigned to either A, B or C type housing. Dorms that are A differentiated are usually known as the Virgin Vaults. Absolutely no women (men) permitted in this dormitory are the words on a sign that hits you in the face day after day. Depress- ing isn ' t it? ' B type dorms are not quite as bad. Friends of the opposite sex may come into the lobby, but that ' s it . . .so you sit there fantasizing for the remainder of the night. Dorms that are C differentiated per- mit visitation two nights a week for a total of twelve hours. This isn ' t so bad, but I have heard dorm directors say, don ' t do anything you can ' t get stopped by the time the master key is in the door. So there you are doing it with fear of the dorm director coming in any minute. In accordance with campus regulations, when someone visits you they must be wearing clothes suitable for street wear. Now what exactly is that? I mean, a flasher dresses suitable for the street, but when he opens his coat, it ' s a different pic- ture. Then there ' s signing in and out of the dorm. It ' s a waste of our time and the uni- versity ' s money. I cannot understand why the university requires it. Maybe it ' s like one guy said, they make you sign a girl in and out so if she comes up pregnant and the father tries to squirm his way out of it, Housing can go back and find out who she was with on mat night. This may or may not be true, but it makes as much sense as the university ' s explanation. Then there ' s the problem of getting roommates out of the room. What happens when all three roommates want to be in the room alone with their partners? You have one of two choices ... no one gets in the room and everyone stays mad at each other or you all get together and have a party! The administration would probably call this an orgy, but we ' ll call it having a good time. But these good times in rooms with bunkbeds can become a hassle so remember . . . don t do anything you can ' t stop by the time the master key is in the door. MTSU has got to be one of the most frigid universities around, but then again what do I know ... I am just a student. Bugs, not in my room? (rod Lojaxnq sit. lAJitrk ohm,, oum J7 39 40 Written by Jeff Ellis Photos by Alan Loveless Four to six eggs, eight pieces of bacon, five sau- sages and grits washed down with two glasses of orange juice and a huge glass of milk โ€” For most peo- ple that bill of fare means an entire week of breakfast menus. But for some MTSU Body Builders, this is an essential part of their training regimen. In the past few years, body building has grown from an ooscure activity practiced by relatively few to a sport that is growing at momentum. At MSTU a group of young men train almost every day to achieve something. Whether that something is body perfec- tion, increased strength or improved sports perform- ance, these men are pumping Iron. MTSU ' s Pat Hannon, assistant professor in the department of HPERS and a body builder himself, says body building is basically designed to increase musculature through weight training. Student Michael Whittaker, a HPERS major, has been training for four years because body building brings him satisfaction. I want to develop my body to the best point possible, states Whittaker. Stan Murphy, a senior from Lewisburg who also works hard at building his body, feels body building is an unconscious desire to reach total perfection. Jeff Preston, a MTSU student from Gallatin who ' s also an iron pumper, points out body building is unlike team sports, where t here ' s help from players and coaches. In body building one has to oe the trainer, coach and team; and he wins by himself. Body building on a competitive level is divided into three areas: Olympic lifting, power lifting and the physique contest. Olympic lifting is made up of three events โ€” the snatch, clean and jerk and the press. Power lifting includes the dead lift, the bench press and the squat. In the physique contest where body builders compete for titles such as Mr. Tennessee, Mr. America and Mr. World, criteria for judging is usually done on the basis of symmetry, propor- tion and size differentiation. Jeff Preston explained one is judged on biceps, deltoids and other muscles and the way they are defined from one another. Michael Whittaker ' s goal is to be Mr. Tennessee and to move to greater things. He stresses it is essential that body builders set certain goals or training will most likely be futile. Jeff Preston has competed in only two physique contests and much to his chagrin, was unsuccessful. The day after the competition, I was back at the gym working out. It made me even more determined to improve my body. Next time, I ' ll be in even better shape. For the body builder, training can become a sort of religion. Jeff Preston trains six days a week while Stan Murphy trains four days a week, running on alternate days. If not running, Murphy skips rope ana lifts weights. Murphy also trains with Whittaker, who believes having a partner to work out with gives one a better competitive edge. When working out with someone, they not only provide compe- tition but can point out weak areas, says Whittaker. Plus, a competitor gives one more deter- mination to succeed. Michael Whittaker, HPERS major from Hartsville. 42 Jeff Preston from Gallatin, Tennessee. Stan Murphy, a senior from Lewis- burg. Diet also plays an impor- tant role in the body build- er ' s regimen. Stan Murphy- eats a huge breakfast, hght lunch and heavy supper. For breakfast he usually will have four to six eggs, bacon, sausage, grits, juice and milk. He has a problem keep- ing his weight up which is why his caloric intake is so high. Michael Whittaker has trouble keeping his weight down so he maintains a low intake of carbohydrates. Jeff Preston, who does not have any real problems with his weight is on a high pro- tein kick. He starts his day with a high protein shake made from six eggs, eight ounces of milk and one pack- age of Carnation instant breakfast. 43 The body builder deals with many stereotypes the public places upon him. Such as the belief that all body builders are vain, egotistical and self-centered. Although this may hold true for a small percentage, it does not fit the MTSU body builder. These men are intelligent and articulate individuals with varied interests. As the public ' s awareness has increased, so has the popularity of the sport. Much of this can be credited to Arnold Schwarzenegger, perhaps the best known exponent of body building. Schwarzenegger has helped to make body building a legitimate sport. Today there is more exposure ana recognition for the body builder. Pat Hannon says, thanks to that, the public understands the sport of body building better. The average body builder is an idealist striving for perfection. 44 i M ; - 1 I J ย I 4 | 45 A 11 Sing 48 49 50 53 Derby Week Registration? Final figures are unavailable because of late regis- trants, but Cliff Gillespie, Dean of Admission and Records, said that with 150 students added on Wed- nesday and Thursday, we ' ll probably have over 9,700. Gillespie credits the growth in the freshmen class ( an increase of 200, from 1,743 to 1,855) to improved recruiting by the faculty, ASB and other organiza- tions which took an active part such as bringing high school groups on campus last spring. Gillespie expressed concern over the fact that the number of returning students has dropped off. Of the possible number of students who could come back this year, fewer came back than in previous years. Graduate and transfer students contributed to the increase from last year ' s enrollment of 9452. New stu- dents entering the graduate schools increased by 38 percent, from 245 to 338. Transfer students, mostly upperclassmen, increased by 2.2 per cent. 142 Undergraduate Sheree Alcorn William Aldrich Cheryl Alexander Edwin Alexandrall Karen Alexander David Alexandra Vivienne Allard disciplinary action by John Pitts Although the university has been restrained in dealing with a recent rash of nighttime incidents out- side residence halls, obviously we ' re going to have to do something soon, Associate Dean of Students Ivan Shewmake said yesterday. I really don ' t know what we ' re going to do . . . it ' s getting to the place where we ' re going to have to respond, Shewmake said about the month-long series of panty raids and jock raids that have been tak- ing place outside the dorms at night. According to the dean, we felt that if we showed restraint that this thing would simply cease of its own accord . . . but from being out there, it ' s obvious it ' s not ceasing. The first report of a panty raid on campus this semester was Sept. 12, Shewmake said. The majority of nights since then there has been some kind of raid, Shewmake added. On Monday night, university police surrounded I Dorm to await the return of 30-35 male students on a midnight panty raid, Shewmake said. That was the third run they had made that night ... on the first two raids, we just worried about get- ting the people back into the dorms, the dean said. No jocks, just rocks Residents of two male dorms greeted some jock raiders last night with a hail of rocks and bottles, putting a quick end to the second such raid in a week. Despite the cool temperatures outside, at least nine girls assembled at Cummings Hall and made the short dash to H and I halls in a female version of the tradi- tional panty raid. Instead of jocks, the girls found themselves dodg- ing an assortment of objects being thrown at them. Two girls were drenched by a bucket of water thrown by H Hall residents. A panty raid started forming a few minutes later near Clement Hall. About 15 males had gathered for a raid on Gracy Hall, but they scattered when a Univer- sity Police car arrived on the scene. The problem, according to Sgt. Clair Hendrikson, of the university police, is that people don ' t want to walk from the Greenland and High Rise parking lots. Hendrikson said that these commuter lots always have spaces available. The problem comes when commuters park in spaces designated for dorm residents. Parking tickets written Thursday included a notation that spaces were available in these lots. There are only 1,400 to 1,500 spaces available for dorm residents. It will be about a month before it is known if this is enough. I would like to see more parking places, said Hendrikson, but there is no place to put them. MTSU has a better parking situation than any other state university, said Hendrikson. UT Knox- ville charges $50 per year for a parking sticker that guarantees a parking space. We could do the same thing, said Hendrikson, but we would need a lot of reserve space and some type of control. 158 Undergraduate Catherine Forkum Wayne Forkum Robby Forrest William Forrister Paul Forster Robert Forsythe Donald Foster Doyle Foster Howell Foster Lynn Foster Sharon Foster Sherry Foster Dana Foust Mary Foust Robbie Foutch Joe Fowler Earl Fowlkes Bettye Sue Fox Russell Fox Tawana France Darlene Francis John Frankhouser Bruce Franks Cathy Frazier Kaye Frazier Timothy Free Diane Freeman Teresa Freeman Dorris Freeman James Freeze David Freitag Ellen French Pat Freudenthal John Frost Mike Frost Marsha Fulghum Kathy Fulton Carla Fuqua Susan Furnace Andra Fuson Melissa Fussell Terri Gaddy 159 Undergraduate Steve Gadsey Mike Gallagher James Galloway Mary Lee Ganigan Sonya Gannon Tim Gannon Chenita Gant Vickie Gant William Gant Barbara Gardner George Garner Tony Garner William Garner Deborah Garrison Julie Gary Helen Gass Terri Gates Thomas Gavlick John Gaylor Larry Geiger Sharon Geldrick Vickie Gher Ronnie George Beverly Golden Richard Gibbons Evelyn Gibson Gene Gibson Lisa Gibson Pamela Gibson Peggy Gibson Angela Gilbert Ellen Gilbert Jesse Gilbert Mary Ann Gilbert Beverly Giles Kenneth Gilliam Regina Gilliam Mary Gil more Lisa Givens Ross Givens Donna Glover Brent Gobbell Tommy Goddard Carrie Goforth Etoria Goggins Carol Golden Stephen Goldstein Donna Gonce Monica Gonn Bernice Gooch Christy Goode Glyndiakay Good Kathy Good Sandra Good f ยซft 160 Undergraduate Paula A. POLICE RAI D BEER, POT PARTY by Tom Wood Three Smith Hall residents were cited for alleged possession of marijuana and drinking beer on campus late Wednesday night in a raid by Uni- versity Police. In addition, three other students had their IDs pulled for participation in a drinking party by the campus police force and Associate Dean of Students Ivan Shewmake. No charges have been formally filed, according to Shewmake, and there won ' t be until some determination is made as to who exactly should and should not be charged because some ada- mantly deny engaging in anything, Shewmake added. I will interview each person who was in the room at the beginning of next week. Then some adjudication will take place. At 10:19 p.m. Wednesday, according to campus police reports, a call was received at the station complaining of a drinking party in a dorm room at Smith Hall. Within minutes, abo ut six officers had con- verged on the scene to break up the party. As the police entered the room, officer Ed Luther said, a water pipe was going and there were three or four open containers of beer on the table. We found a little bit of marijuana, some alco- hol, pills of an unknown nature and drug-related paraphernalia in the room, the officer said. Now we ' re trying to determine who it belongs to. The pills proved to be medication from the campus infirmary. One of the students acknowledged beer-drink- ing in his room, but said he knew of nothing else. Yes, we were drinking beer and had some in two refrigerators. I ' ve never seen the water pipe before. During a search of one of the rooms, a Sidelines photographer taking photos was confronted by one officer, who stated that they (University Police) would have to see the film before it was printed. However, the photographer refused. G. Scarlett. In a conversation with Joy Heath, ASB Speaker of the House, Scarlett learned that the word staff is used frequently to fill in the column in the schedules where the teacher ' s name should be listed. The Presi- dent ' s office contacted the office of academic affairs and requested that the departments list the teachers of the respective courses and eliminate the use of staff. William Greene, administrative assistant to Dr. Scarlett, said that the schedules that had already been received from the departments were returned and they were requested to fill in the teachers ' names. Only in cases of graduate assistants and other una- voidable situations will the word staff be used. Mrs. Rebecca Hampton of the office of academic affairs said that the class schedules had been received from the departments and that the Spring 197S sched- ules were being printed. The matter of the use of staff in MTSU schedules was brought up a few weeks ago when Heath announced that she would sponsor a resolution to have the word staff eliminated. 182 Undergraduate Farrell Roberts Mike Robicland Chris Robinson Gerald Robinson Mary Robinson Pamela Robinson Ray Robinson Vincent Robinson Paul Rodriguez James Rogers Karhryn Rogers Pam Rogers Patricia Rogers Sharon Rogers Susan Rogers Joseph Rohling Debbie Rollins Jan Roney Cindy Ross James Rossman Patti Rowe Tim Rowe Kathy Rowland Lisa Rowland Jeff Rowlett Brenda Paynor Brenda Rozolsky Denice Rucker Robin Rudd Gloria Rummage Bridgette Rumsey Jim Rungee Kim Runyan Emily Rush Jean Roberts Mary Wileczek Kristen Wilhite David Wilkerson Patrica Wilkins Larry Wiley Charles Williams 183 Undergraduate Elaine Russell Linda Ryan Monica Rye Jim Russell Richard Russell Denise Rust Phillip Rutter Cathy Ryder Donald Rymer Pam Sabiston Tim G. The All-Sports Championship is based on points given for placing in cross country, football, basketball, baseball, golf, tennis and outdoor track. As can be quickly assumed, the school that earns the All-Sports Championship has in a sense earned the respect of having the best all-Round athletic program. After second division finishes in cross country and football, the Blue Raiders began to make their move with a second place finish in basketball, baseball, golf, tennis and track. The baseball team took the divisional title and second place in the conference to keep the ball rolling. Dr. Patty ' s golfers finished second as did the up-and-coming tennis team. But the big boost was in track where Dean Hayes and his group of jumpers and runners whizzed their way to the conference title and put Middle Tennessee in the driver ' s seat for its first All-Sports Championship. Western Kentucky never gave up and dogged the Blue Raiders down to the wire finishing in second place two points back. Below, L. to R.: Ben Hurt (Football), John Stanford (Baseball), Jimmy Earle (Basketball), Charles Bubber Murphy (Athletic Director), Dr. E. K. Patty (Golf), Dick LaLance (Tennis), Dean Hayes (Track), Gordon Connell (Wrestling). ' ( i After a slow start, the 1977 Blue Raider baseball team put it together, winning the Western Division championship and compiling a 26-19 record. The team was led by Mike Moore of Chattanooga, who compiled an 8-2 season record and was named the O.V.C. ' s Most Valuable Player of the Year. Moore pitched 79 Vk innings and had a 2.53 E.R.A., one of the best in the conference. He also had 50 strikeouts, walked 39 batters and pitched a no-hitter against Milligan College, which the Raiders won 1-0. He also pitched a three-hitter in M.T.S.U. ' s 3-0 shutout of Tennessee Tech., and a two-hitter in the Raiders 5-2 win over Western Kentucky. Centerfielder Danny Moore led the team in batting with a .319 average. He also collected more hits than anyone else on the team, 43, and led the Raiders in triples with five. First baseman John Weathers led the club in homeruns with 10 โ€” a new school record โ€” and R.B.I. ' s with 41, while putting together a .310 batting average. 201 Baseball 77 Other Raiders with averages over the .300 mark were catcher Rick Cheshire at .315 and Stan Shanks with .307. After winning the division title, the Raiders hoped to repeat as conference champions and win a spot in the regional playoffs. But this year Morehead ' s Eagles turned the tables and beat the Raiders 8-5 and 14-1 in the best of three series. Cheshire, Mike and Danny Moore along with infielder Ben Langster were named to the Western Division ' s All-OVC team. 202 Baseball 77 Outdoor Track r y i 1977 was indeed the year that the Blue Raider outdoor track team finally arrived. Coach Dean Hayes had waited 12 years to win an Ohio Valley Conference Crown and this was the year. In heading for their first-ever championship, the Raiders went undefeated. Five first place finishes at the O.V.C. championship track meet in Bowling Green, Kentucky, gave the Raiders the title in May. A week earlier they took first place in the Tennessee Intercollegiate games in Memphis, beating Austin Peay, Memphis State and other Tennessee schools. As a fitting honor, Coach Hayes was named the O.V.C. ' s Coach of the Year, and jumper John DoDoo was selected Co-Trackman of the Year in the Conference. At the championship meet, DoDoo took first place in the triple jump, Russell Holloway won the 400 meter intermediate hurdles, Harrison Salame finished first in the discus, Skeikh Faye took top honors in the long jump and the one mile relay team of Larry Cotton, David Robinson, Ed Stegall and J. T. Musgrove tied an O.V.C. record in winning first place. 205 Track ' 77 206 Track ' 77 Women ' s tennis had what was perhaps its best year in 1977, finishing the season with a 10-9 record and placing third in the state championship tournament. Coachea by former Raider tennis star Sandy Neal, the squad was paced by Karen Miller, Corrine McDonald and Traci Williams. The third place finish was well above what many experts figured the Raiders would do, and it came despite several injuries which hampered MTSU in key matches throughout the season. 208 Tennis ' 77 209 Tennis 77 The Raiders ' men ' s tennis team started the season as the defending OVC champions but with a freshman coach and a squad heavily depleted by graduation, few had much hope for the young team. But under Coach LaLance, the scrappy team put together an 11-7 season and took second place in the OVC in what was to have been a ' rebuilding year. At the OVC tournament in Bowling Green, Kentucky, Tony Fernan- dez pulled a stunning upset and beat top- seeded Howard Flagg of ETSU. Australian Peter Heffernan and Chris Baker (11-5 in the regular season) picked up confer- ence honors as the best number two doubles team. 210 Tennis ' 77 S v U t T T 1 T T i ' T ......... .-m i i . . . The TSU Tigers recovered a fumble in the end zone for the first score of the game. And if that wasn ' t enough, the Tigers intercepted a Mike Robinson pass and returned it 67 yards for the second score. The crowd started wondering if this was going to be one of those years. TSU added two more TD ' s behind the rushing of Aaron Jones (20). Despite the Raider loss, linebacker Andra Bullock led a strong MTSU defense with 14 tackles and 8 assists. 215 Football Miss at Morehead After losing their second consecutive 27-0 battle with a non-conference foe, this time to Gulf-South Conference member UT-Martin, the Blue Raiders headed for Morehead, Kentucky, and their first OVC game. The Raiders broke their scoring drought with two first quarter TD ' s on runs of eight and one yard. But the Eagles countered with two second quarter TD ' s to tie the score 14-14 at the half. Morehead jumped out to a 10-point lead in the third quarter before the Raiders came back with a touchdown to close the margin to three. Neither team was able to score in the fourth quarter and the clock ran out after MTSU missed a first down by inches deep in Eagle territory. If ever there was a time for a morale-boosting win, it was at Morehead. Things got no better the next weekend in Chattanooga, where the Mocs massacred the Blue Raiders 38-7 to avenge last year ' s upset in Murfreesboro. No victories, four defeats and the season nearing the half-way point. The dejected Raiders returned home to somehow prepare for the invasion of the Colonels from Eastern Kentucky โ€” the defending OVC champs and the 1977 pre-season conference favorites. 216 Football 217 Football 218 Football Big Wet Win MTSU 19, Eastern Kentucky 10 . . . can you believe it? How in the world could a team 0-4 knock off the pre- season pick to win the VC? The answer is easy, if you have a player who can walk on water, and tonight MTSU did . . . Mike Moore. In a raging downpour, the powerful senior fullback rambled, darted and glided for two TD ' s and a total of 106 yards. The Raiders trailed 7-6 at the half and 10-6 deep into the fourth quarter. But then came what was probably the biggest play of the season. MTSU had the ball on its own one-yard line with the rain pouring and the clock ticking down from 4:15. Jeff Shockley split wide left . . .the snap . . . Robinson drops back . . . THE BOMB . . . Shockley had it 56 yards downfield and suddenly the Raiders had it first and 10 on the Colonels ' 43. Six plays later Robinson scored from four yards out. 219 Football 220 Football fe v o โ€ข v r Down, Up, Down The Racers from Murray spoiled the Raiders ' Homecoming the next weekend with a 13-9 win. Then the Raiders flew into Newark, Delaware, with hopes for the intersectional contest, only to be crushed 60-7, the worst MTSU defeat in years. But once again, the downtrodden Raiders bounced back, this time beating Austin Peay, the eventual OVC champion, by a 15-6 score on the Governors ' home field in Clarksville. Returning to Murf reesboro the next weekend, the Raiders edged the Hilltoppers from Western Kentucky 21-19 and incredibly, MTSU had a chance for a share of the OVC conference in championship if it could beat East Tennessee in Johnson City. But the Bucs in their Mini-dome brought the Raiders back down to earth with a 38-17 from behind win. 221 Football Only the traditional season finale against arch-rival Tennessee Tech remained. Could a team get fired-up for the last game when the best they could do would be to tie the record (4-7) of the past two years? But MTSU did, at least for three quarters. It was a beautiful, sunny November day with nearly 8,000 fans on hand. The first quarter went scoreless with only Tech threatening to score. MTSU ' s other Mike Robinson, the team ' s kicker, put his toe to good use in the second quarter, booting the Raider ' s into the lead with a 39 โ€” and 54 โ€” yard field goal. The 54- yarder set a new school record and gave MTSU a surprising 6-0 half time lead. Robinson returned to the turf in the third quarter to increase the lead to 9-0 with a 48-yard field goal. Raiders ahead 9-0 at the end of three quarters ... if only the season could have ended then. But it didn ' t and in the last 10 minutes of the game the Golden Eagles threw their offensive machine into gear and ran up three TD ' s to take a 21-9 win. The season was over for the seniors, just beginning for the underclassmen. Unfortunately, 1977 had more downs than ups. f 122 I ball Kยฃ ' us - jE - j - %? !% $ r ยซ- i ?: M ' โ€ข : 1 -โ€ขย -- %5 w3t โ– I Cross Country 1977 marked the end of Middle Tennessee holding up the rest of the Ohio Valley Conference in the jcross country standings as the Blue Raiders vaulted up to the number seven position. Coach Dean Hayes was not upset with the finish consid- ering the injuries during the season. The biggest blow came when veteran Dennis Votava injured his back and missed most of the season. There were a few bright spots though, like the David Lipscomb Invitational where Middle Ten- nessee took first place with Raider harrier Gary Perry taking top honors in the individual compe- tition. In the Bradshaw Invitational, MTSU placed second among thirteen other schools with Perry again leading the way for the Raiders with a second place finish. It was a long season for the Raider harriers as they huffed and puffed their way through a few dual meets on whate ver healthy legs they could find. Volleyball 225 Volleyball 77 Women ' s volleyball is trying desperately to get out of the infant stages at Middle Tennessee and into the form of a strong program. Never has the team had its own fulltime coach, but this year Sandy Neal (women ' s tennis coach) was given the duties of coaching the volleyball squad and went into the job with a lot of vigor. The squad, consisting of only nine players, was even more enthusiastic about their game. The highlight of the season was winning the Austin Peay Invitational Tournament. The schedule once again included old standbys like Tennessee Tech (is there a sport we don ' t play them in?), U.T. โ€” Chattanooga, U.T. โ€” Martin, Tennessee and Memphis State. Coach Neal ' s first year and seniors Amy Donahue (M.V.P.), Caroline Miller, Ardena Garth and Shelley Smith ' s last was culminated by a fourth place finish in the state tournament. โ€” V 226 Volleyball 77 Wrestling 227 Wrestling 77 I โ–  ii mm niimMUu , . , โ€” M !- 2ย Coach Gordon Connell scheduled some top flight opponents for his Raider grapplers along with a few of the top tournaments in the region. But, as in the past, his main goal was to get a wrestler into the finals of a big tournament. Early in the season, injuries took a heavy toll dampening the outlook a bit. They key loss was senior Pat Simp- son at the 126 pound weight class. Veteran David Scott was lost with student teaching duties. With this depleted roster, Connell concentrated even more on the tournaments. Senior Kvle Smith was the 158 pound champion at the Ball State Invita- tional and took third place in the SEIWA tour- ney. Tommy Smith, a seasoned wrestler at 135 pounds, had an excellent year finishing second in the SEIWA. David James, a scrappy 119-pounder, fought his way to third in the SEIWA after being seeded fourth. Tony Rowland, Anthony and Michael Kennedy, and Frank Simpson enioyed good sea- sons for MTSU. But the Killer on the squad, 150 pounder, Mike Kuziola, pinned two of his three foes on his way to a SEIWA championship. 229 Wrestling 77 i ' -. . A vf y$i ld$- ! ' RlfiH Basketball! 235 Women ' s Basketball 236 Women ' s Basketball The Lady Raider basketball team (ah yes, the term Raiderette fortunately has fallen by the wayside) decided to upgrade its schedule all the way in one year. Last year there were a few pushovers in Vanderbilt, Maryville College and Lambuth College, but no more as a few small schools named Kentucky, Tennessee, Missouri and Alabama joined the lineup of foes. One old nemesis, Tennessee Tech remained and once again edged M.T.S.U. 88-81 for its 8th win in nine meetings. Unfortunately, the winning season was marred by a running feud between Coach Pat Sarver and Women ' s Athletic Director Pat Jones. Jones had sought Sarver ' s removal before the season began, and although Pi-esident Scarlett gave the coach a temporary reprieve in November, she got the word as the season was beginning that her tenure as women ' s basketball coach had ended. 237 Women ' s Basketball The women did more than hold their own in the O.V.C. and against traditional opponents. This was a year for firsts, the Thanksgiving Tip-Off Tournament and an O.V.C. standing for the women. After falling to Morehead State 94-89 in overtime and then to Tech, the Lady Raiders won five straight O.V.C. games topped with a 94-67 rout of Eastern Kentucky at Murphy Center. Liz Hannah tossed in some long range bombs to lead the way with 20 points. Austin Peay proved to be no match for the experienced M.T.S.U. squad in their first meeting of the season as the final score would indicate: M.T.S.U.-90, A.P.S.U.-52. Newcomers to Murphy Center, like East Tennessee ' s Lady Buccaneers, put a mild scare into the hosts before falling 82- 71. But surprisingly, both foes quickly became tough on their home courts and the results were disappointing and close. E.T.S.U. must really feel at home in the Mini Dome as they did not look the same in downing M.T.S.U. 86-72. What inspired the Lady Govs nobody will ever know, unless it was just the fondness between the two institutions as the hosts in Clarksville hung on until the fading seconds only to die when Raider Jan Zitney pumped in a free throw for the killing blow to give M.T.S.U. a 72-70 win. Hannah played up to her billing as she again led the squad in scoring with a 17- point average. She could best be compared to a finely tuned machine on the court as her 25- foot shots were nothing short of beautiful and while at the free throw line, she rarely did more than get her hands on the ball before it was off and heading for the hoop. Veterans Jan Zitney, Sharon McClannahan, Carol Lance and Linda Carter were always ready for action, but the biggest surprises were sophomore Patrice Amos and transfer Sherry McKinney as they provided a lot of scoring and rebounding. 240 Women ' s Basketball Hopes were high for the 1977-78 Blue Raider basketball team and by early November talk of the team had reached a fever pitch even though football season still had several weeks to go. When Playboy magazine and an official poll of O.V.C. coaches picked Middle to finish first in the conference, even the coy Jimmy Earle ' s talk of a balanced league and tough pre-conference schedule couldn ' t dim the enthusiasm of Raider followers, and season tickets were nearly sold out before the season began. Selected as captains were center Bob Martin, last year ' s O.V.C. tournament ' s Most Valuable Player, guard Sleepy Taylor and junior Greg Joyner. The Raiders opened their season by traveling to Tulsa, Oklahoma, where they lost a close 58-55 battle to the powerful Titans of Oral Roberts University. The Raiders led 40-38 at the half, but a flurry of Raider turnovers and cold shooting in the second half cost M.T.S.U. a victory. Three days later Raider fans got their first look at the team when M.T.S.U., led by Taylor ' s 26 points, defeated Athens College 79-68 in Murphy Center. 241 Basketball 78 Georgia College was the Raiders ' next victim, falling 92- 54 behind the hot shooting of Joyner, who had 21 points, and Martin who tossed in 20. But the biggest shot of the game came when Sleepy Taylor crammed a rebound in the second half to become only the 12th player in M.T.S.U. basketball history to score 1,000 points in a career. After disposing of Georgia Southwestern 79-58, the Raiders ventured to Oxford, Mississippi, to face the Ole Miss Rebels. Behind Sleepy Taylor ' s 26 points, the Raiders upset Ole Miss 61-53. The victory was made even sweeter after the Rebels beat both Vanderbilt and Tennessee down in Oxford later in the season. Then the unimaginable happened. The airplane carrying the University of Evansville Aces, bound for a date with the Raiders at Murphy Center, crashed shortly after taking off for Nashville the evening before the game. The entire squad of players and coaches perished in the accident, and suddenly much of the enthusiasm the Raider team had generated was gone. A memorial service for the Evansville team was held in Murphy Center the day the game was to have been played, and afterwards coach Earle and his players returned to prepare for a season which had to go on. The Raiders overcame a sluggish first half and beat University of North Carolina-Ashville 74-62, but then dropped a 72-51 decision to Michigan State at East Lansing. 242 Basketball 78 243 Basketball 78 244 Basketball ' 78 - N At the Senior Bowl tournament in Mobile, Alabama, the Raiders lost their first game to Pepperdine 68-61, and then they turned Bucknell 77- 65 in the consolation game, coming back from an 11-point halftime deficit. Then came the biggest win of the season as the Blue Raiders demolished outmanned Culver-Stockton 81-34, and stormed past Urbana 84-48 to close out the pre-conference season. Despite their lofty hopes of winning the O.V.C. title, the Raiders had to open their conference schedule with the annual trip to Death Valley, a two-game road trip they had not swept since 1952. But this was 1978 and the powerful Raiders did indeed sweep the trip, beating Morehead 92-59 and Eastern Kentucky 93-86. Eastern had closed the M.T.S.U. lead to one point late in the game, but Greg Armstrong and Martin kept feeding the ball to Sleepy Taylor, who rammed in 20 for the Raiders ' final 36 points. I ' m still in shock, said an elated Jimmy Earle after the game. When you make this trip and come out with two wins, you can ' t help but get enthused. Now 2-0 and tied for first place in the O.V.C, the Raiders came home to face Tennessee Tech. in a game that would determine the league lead. The Eagles had yet to win a road game, but M.T.S.U. blew a four-point halftime lead and watched as Tech. preserved its narrow lead in the second half to upset the Raiders 65-60. Middle got back on the winning track two nights later in Murphy Center by beating powerful East Tennessee, 68-61. The Bucs had jumped out to a 10-point lead before the Raiders shut down their fast break and took the lead for good on a jumper by Bob Martin with three minutes left in the first half. 245 Basketball 78 X?A Now tied for first place in the O.V.C., the Raiders prepared for Austin Peay, a team they beat to win the O.V.C. tournament in 1977. The game was tied at the half and when the Raiders took a four-point lead on shots by Martin and Leroy Coleman, it looked like the Raiders would beat Peay for the first time in Murphy Center since 1975. But with time running out, the Govs took a two-point lead, stalled and captured a 64-62 win. Two nights later at Murray, the Raiders held off the surging Racers and escaped with a 78-77 victory, in a game that saw Greg Joyner score a career-high 34 points. With six league games played, Middle had a better record on the road (3-0) than they did at home (1-2), so the Raiders were decided underdogs when league- leading Western Kentucky invaded Murphy Center. But playing what Earle called their best game of the year, the Raiders upset the Hilltoppers by a lopsided 98-69 margin in a game that was never close. Leroy Coleman, considered the team ' s best defensive player, helped put the lid on the high-scoring Western machine. Basketball 78 HHPl - T โ– โ– p ar โ€ข ยซ v. to .. โ–  ยซ II 25 H R m โ€” โ€” ,-โ–  m i โ€ข X s$m Opening- the second half of the O.V.C. season against Eastern Kentucky, the Raiders were forced into their first overtime game of the year when the Colonels tied the game at 60-all after regulation play ended. But aided by a Joyner jump shot and four Greg Armstrong free throws, the Raiders outscored Eastern in the overtime period to take a difficult 74-73 win. 248 Basketball 78 For the third time in three weeks, the Raiders were again tied for the O.V.C. lead, and two nights later when Morehead came to town, Middle took sole possession of the top spot. In possibly the strangest game of the year, the lowly Golden Eagles, winless in conference play, played a slowdown game and scared the Raiders before falling 38-37. Though now alone at the top of the O.V.C. standings, Middle faced an awesome schedule which found them playing four of their 1st five games on the road. The road show opened against Tennessee Tech, and the 1,500 Raider fans who followed Middle to Cookeville saw M.T.S.U. get revenge for the earlier loss beating the Eagles 57-51. Joyner, who had 20 points, iced the game with a pair of free throws in the last minute which helped foil a Tech comeback. Then came the big one. The Raiders ventured to Johnson City to take on the East Tennessee Bucs, who were at the top of the O.V.C. standings with Middle. But the nationally ranked Raider defense shut down the high-scoring Bucs and claimed undisputed first place in the O.V.C. with a 62-53 victory in the Minidome. Back in Murfreesboro for their last home game of the year, the Raiders had to overcome a 12- point deficit in the second half to take their third straight one- point victory at Murphy Center, this time a 57-5 6 squeaker over Murray. Two nights later the Raiders lost their first O.V.C. road game of the season when rival Austin Peay beat M.T.S.U. 80- 72 in Clarksville. Despite a 102- degree temperature, Greg Joyner scored 26 points and grabbed eight rebounds. But the super effort was not enough to match the hot- shooting Govs, who had now put a damper on the Raider ' s hopes for sole possession of the O.V.C. crown. 249 Basketball 78 ?50 sketball ' 78 W M โ– ยซ ? ยซ m m ! Two nights later the Raiders lost their first OVC road game of the season when rival Austin Peay beat MTSU 80-72 in Clarksville. Despite a 102- degree temerature, Greg Joyner scored 26 points and grabbed eight rebounds. But the super effort was not enough to match the hot-shooting Govs, who had now put a damper on the Raider ' s hopes for sole possession of the OVC Crown. The Raiders were still not at full strength when they hobbled into Bowling Green, Kentucky, to play their final game of the regular season, but if Middle could somehow win, the OVC championship would be on the bus back to Murfreesboro. But the game was also a must for Western, which needed a victory to gain a spot in the OVC tournament it would be hosting the next week. The Hilltoppers jumped off to a quick 16-6 lead and never trailed, although the Raiders closed the margin to 78-72 with four minutes left in the contest. The win avenged Western ' s humiliat- ing earlier season loss to MTSU, and smashed the Raider ' s hopes of laying undisputed claim to the OVC champi- onship. The only good news of the evening came from Cookeville, where Tennes- see Tech upset East Tennessee, giving the Raiders a share of the OCV crown with the Bucs and assuring Middle of top seeding in the conference tourna- ment. 252 Basketball 78 253 Basketball 78 m] LV 1 V. mM โ€ข H 254 Basketball ' 78 at halftime. The lead swayed back and forth dur- ing much of the second half before Peay edged ahead for good with seven minutes left in the game. The determined Raiders kept the score close and remained in the contest to the end before the Govs edged away to take a 66-61 victory. So shortly before midnight on March 3, the 1978 basketball season ended, barely three months after it started with the easy win over Athens. It was a season of heartbreaking losses and heartstopping victories. It was a season of bad knees, hign temperatures and hot tempers. It was a season marred by the Evansville plane crash but buoyed by the hopes of getting Bob Martin on the Pizza Hut team. It was a season of contro- versy, with even the starting time of the game evoking hot debates. It was a season of Let ' s go Blue, Flush Peay and If You Can ' t Go to College, Go to Tech. It was a season of Raider Roadies and Middle Mania. But most of all, it was a season unlike any before it and one not likely to be repeated. It was a sea- son we won ' t soon forget. Hopes were high when the Raiders returned to Bowling Green the next week for the OVC tour- nament. The huge throng of Raider fans who made the trip up to Kentucky figured fate was on their side when the Big Blue took the floor against old nemesis Austin Peay, the only team to beat Middle twice during the season. But the Govs took an early 10-point lead before the Raiders battled back to come within one point 255 Basketball 78 I (A N 2 Senate Mike McMacDonald Senate Riley Clark,. First off, this was the worst decision of my life โ€” mainly because I got little enjoyment out of it and knew this would be the case when I took the job but took it anyway. There were times when waves of joy did flow through me but those times were too few because I was always so uptight. People around me didn ' t help matters any by constantly asking How ' s yearbook going? or when ' s your deadline? Most of you didn ' t really want or care about my answer so why did you bug me by asking? Then there was the problem of getting students interested enough to work. The ones I got (Vivian, Debbie and Eddeth) thanks for sticking with me. To the rest of you, I do understand about the dates you couldn ' t break and the homework you had to do, so thanks also! I want to thank you also Mr. Pitts for being so cooperative when you were sports editor; I ' m really pleased we came to t he agreement that we did since you were such a busy man. Linda Nelson โ€” thank you. There were times when I couldn ' t have gotten along without you and times when I could have. Like the times when certain persons put you in bad moods. Anyway, you are the best managing editor and friend I could have, thanks. Edward Allen Crawford, the UNCOOL commercial art person who thinks he saved our book from lack of design โ€” special thanks. I truly enjoyed work- ing with you and think you did an excellent job on our book even if you were hard to get a hold of. Thanks again Eddie. I ' d also like to thank Robin Rudd for being patient with me until that cer- tain night; Ed Arning for helping me with sports, and Byron St. Dizier for doing more than filling in. In addition to that my thanks go out t o Alan Loveless, Pat Daly, Ben, Side- lines, Mike, the buddy , campus security and my instructors for being under- standing. Sorry the Book is late, I did my best. uMty _
