IT) — (D 03 CD Q- • tSKK r.i ' FROM: Melanie Spain, MIDLANDER TO: Sam McLean, Director of Housing This year the MIDLANDER is presenting a special section on the unique problems of five kinds of campus life-styles, classified by resi- dence. This section will be designed to poke gentle fun at the day-to- day problems of each mode of existence. We were wondering if you could furnish us some copy ideas by relating humorous incidents you might know of that happened in MTSU student residences. Thank you. — Mel lerry: If you ' ll buy the ' food ' you can watch the football game tonight in the apartment with me and Rodney and Jackie. (The wives are going to have coffee together at Jackie ' s apartment.) The Colls are six-point favorites over the Vikings — I ' ll bet with you either way. Are you coming to intramural football practice tomorrow? We have a scrimmage with the Kappa Sigs. — Victor FROM: Judy Smith, Associate Dean of Students TO: Clarice Long, High-Rise West Check out 233 in your dorm — I heard she was last seen about three weeks ago with two suitcases headed east on foot. 706 is charg- ing admission to the sundeck from gullible freshman girls — either stop her or find a way to make her divvy up. — Judy Dr. Crawford: I have the book report that is due in Western Civ class today, but I can ' t bring it to class because the only ride that leaves Manchester today is snowed in. If your mid-term exam is still scheduled for Thursday please tell the girl that gives you this note and shell tell me. If the snow is melted Thursday I ' ll be back for the exam. Thank you, Cynthia Wordley FROM: Brett Blevins, Inter-Fraternity Council TO: Paul Cantrell, Assistant Dean of Students A certain anonymous fraternity has questioned IFC regulations concerning parties. How long can one go on? (I know that university rules specify a time of day, but these guys are talking in terms of weeks and months.) Please hand down a decision before 6:00 Friday if at all possible (that ' s when it ' s supposed to start). — Brett FROM: Sam McLean, Director of Housing TO: All Dorm Directors As soon as possible, cross-examine each resident In your hall and find who was responsible for putting that twenty-foot tall, graphically accurate replica of Michelangelo ' s DAVID on top of the rain root be- tween Felder and Wood Halls. I ' m sure the crowd on campus l 9r homecoming got a big charge out of it. SANDRA: Please tell Gary that I won ' t be able to go back to Shelbyville this weekend — I forgot to go to Chem lab and will have to go when I get out of my 1 1 :00 class. Tell them not to wait for me. Do you know anyone I can spend the weekend with here? — Mary Beth Dear Murfreesboro Electric Department, Please stop sending reminders of the bill for January electrical service. In the first place, I paid it. I lost the cancelled check, but it was dated February 18 or 19 I think. In the second place, my husband just recently let me take over the electric bill and tie is beginning to think I don ' t know what I ' m doing. So do us both a favor and stop billing us. Cordially yours, Mrs. E.E. LaBlonc UNIVERSITY PARK Dear Mr. McLean: Everybody here is up in arms about the midnight gate. How do I convince the city that University Park is a respectable apartment complex and not a big co-ed dorm? I ' ve got this places image to think about. Cordially, Mrs. Mabel Brock Resident Manager FROM: Sam McLean, Director of Houseing TO: Melanie Spain, MIDLANDER I am in receipt of your memo asking me to provide technical assistance in the preparation of a residences ' section of the 1971 MIDLANDER. As I understand it, this is to be a satiric slap in the face of all us hardworking residence officials, and for that reason I must insist that I know of nothing humorous that happens in MTSU resi- dences that your staff would be interested in. — Sam omw •■' ■A t ' ' - ■i:-...].| A tV- ' Room ?) CHECKS •J ! 1S , Mary Lee — Regarding that misprint in the student handbooi that allow boys to use the sundeck: I talked to one of the sumpreme court justices. He said that if Jim and Ronnie tried to get on the sundeck through the halls they would get in trouble tor being in a girls ' dorm. Ronnie is trying to find a tightlipped helicopter pilot — keep your fingers crossed. Beth D. Pam: I ' ve lost my key and can ' t get into the room. Co find Emily; she has another. I think she was going to a home ec class at 9:25 — catch her there. Amy TO: Mrs. Rose Edwards, McHenry Hall 113 has built a sailboat in her room, I ' ve been told. Find out the following: (a) how she got all the materials to her room without anyone getting wise, (b) now long she ' s been at this project, and and most importantly (c) what she ' s planning to USE it for. Urgently, Judy Smith, Assoc. Dean of Students TO: Sam McLean, Director of Housing Suspicious noises, coming from upstairs, make me think that someone is knocking down a wall to form a two-room suite. What are my legal rights here? What kind of workman ' s compensation does a dorm mother qualify for? just asking, mind you. Mrs. Mildred Frazier, Rutledge Hall C- - ■? t-iTo .f. ' i r ' ' ss FROM: )im Free, Director, Gracy Hall TO: Sam McLean, Director of Housing What, within the law, can I do to 218, who likes to crawl around on the roof at night? Tell me quick. Also, 102 hasn ' t checked in; can you tell me something about him? TO: Sam McLean, Director of Housing Re the missing furniture in 320, Beasley Hall; I can ' t help it. My roommate has sold my bed, chair, desk, bookshelves, and bulletin board in quick succession. What he ' s doing with the money I don ' t know, but I haven ' t got it, honest. — |oe Murphreb, Box 3017 TO: )im Free, Cracy Hall I wish I could tell you about 102. His mail and his phone are going untouched, and B L has tried to deliver pizzas there twice that he ' s ordered under fictitious names. Check his room out once more, okay? — Sam Jimmy: I ' ve lost my key and can ' t get into my room. Go find Cedric; he has another. He was going to Chem lab at 1 :00 — catch him there. — Red FROM: )im Free, Cracy Hall TO: Sam McLean, Director of Housing The janitors tell me that 102 is an electrical closet. I won ' t say anything if you don ' t. To The Security Police: I have lost my keys and cannot get inside my car. Please excuse this violation while I hunt tor my keys. Thank you. CD. Tech 14-MTSU 3. 105 For six long decades, Raider basketball has pursued the elusive quest fter greatness. The second year in the life of the institution, the first team was floored with less than an auspicious season in a three-game schedule. Record: 1-2. There followed the coaching eras of Miles, Stephenson, Faulkinberry, Waller, Floyd, Freeman, Midgett, Patty, Murphy, Diddle, Stokes, and Trickey. The quest ranged through many valleys and some peaks - not soaring peaks but, nevertheless, elevations of such height that provided long range views of what could be. Now, the Jimmy Earle era began. The 1971-72 five with Sykes, Bonner, Brown, Drew, Johnson, and others portended a quickening of the search. Picked last in a pre-season poll of Ohio Valley Conference coaches, the Raiders, angered and prodded by Coach Earle and his staff, fought on even terms, or moreso, with their deadly, but sometimes surprised, opponents. Mighty Western fell for the first time in many years. Four games were lost by a composite total of six points. The year ' s end record: 15-11. Heart and courage were the watchwords. Best bunch I ' ve ever coached, said Jimmy Earle. Sadly, the last game in Memorial Gymnasium, that against Austin Peay, was lost. But the warmth pervading the quest can be felt. The goal may be near. Next season the Raiders move one door north to the magnificent fieldhouse with a returning nucleus, a group of stellar freshmen and best of all, a stirring tradition engendered this year. i ■tl If ■■■■■■•■■••■•■«■•«■■■' It .■■■■■■■•■■■■■■ «kiii«a lb ' . lU MtkuL Dave LaGrange, Chief Pilot Steve Sounders, Worthy Navigator Bernard Doubler, Master of Communications Milton Critfis, Courier lames Walker, Crevk- Chief John Games, Dispatcher Timothy McGhee Alan Russel William Reese Mike Liles Randall Vinson Mark Rader Larry Skelley William K. leter Robert Craves Dennis Dadaria Donald Ace Rick Hodges Clark Coleman Terry Trimble Alex Nelson Bill Rankin Dick Davis Fred Johnson Larrv Wilson Glen Marshall 55 m Felix Dunaway Larry Fitzgerald Jim Davis, Vice President I Richard Hehnen )eff Radway Tony Peek Harold Butlrey Windon Ringer Jerry Long Dale Eakes Nick Nichols Monte Glass Elias Cunningham Dwight Cray, Vice President II Tommy Bigham Jack Dayton, President Gary Doe Dayton Bill Oglesby Tom Nations Robert Downing, Secretary Bill Bertoia, Treasurer Lynn Stalljngs Sam Davis Jim Eldridge Brian McQuade Billy Joe Moss Gerald Phillips Bill Williamson Raymond Yeakey Dr. Ronald Toulouse Dr. Robert Martin lane Holman Arlene McDonald Debbie Hayes Pat Todd Kay Childress Sally Carnahan Ellen Holman, Sweetheart Sandy Cummins Ellen Rogers Debbie Maxwell Kathy Holman Sara Patterson SI eo o as U E o c «x 0) o o - — m u 2 eu O u. tn Q ao.:: - £|.5i m U -S t - 0) CO hi E . o u. 0; o J3 S£ -=, D C 111 w O lU fSu ' O 3J i « = a. ; f c c ii § c -guy 00 ' ° Oi c o c tr Qi o .. r; E 5 •-DO u. a: 0) UJ ' E g- U (TJ 00 CO . COLUMBIA SCHOLASTIC PRESS ASSOCIATION Medalist Award, 1971 Now in its fifth year, COLLAGE has taken its place as a unique creative MTSU publication. COLLAGE ' S approach is different from all other campus publications, being limited to no certain style or type of content. Versatility is the key, and COLLAGE is always looking for new material, new ideas, new looks. COLLAGE provides reading enjoyment for the student in areas of literature, art, and general feature, as well as providing an outlet for campus creative talent and an area of journalistic experience for staff members. Each year so far has seen a few slow and painful steps of progress. This year the staff has more than doubled in size and moved to a spacious, but temporary, residence in theold maintenance building. Page designed by Tim McGhee, Photographer The 1972 MIDLANDER is an experiment. Like all experiments it could be a total failure. Yet, every experiment involves a learning experience upon whose outcome depends on you, the reader. In considering the format of the 1972 MIDLANDER, we didn ' t think you wanted a yearbook in a 1967 format with updated pictures. We tried not to give you one. Hopefully the year 1972 will be a year of transition in the history of the yearbook at MTSU. You cannot change all tradition in one year; nor is change necessarily beneficial. But we are fighting the death of the yearbook, not only on this campus but on all campuses.and if we don ' t change into a relevant reflector of the university, we will die. We hope that the opening section of this book will have meaning to all readers. The remainder of the book only has meaning to different segments of the university; we tried to be representative in this presentation. In this book we tried not to bog you down with meaningless captions and token commentaries or stilted posed shots. In this stress on informality and pictoral comment we don ' t mean to offend, only to make note of. We may present you with ideas and problems. You may or may not agree. But communication, important though it is, is only a start. What you do after communication is achieved, whether you are moved to positive action or remain passive and uninvolved, is of primary and urgent concern. We depl ore apathy as many before us have deplored it. We may be as unsuccessful in combatting it as others have been. But if one of the things we show you in this book motivates you to act, our existence is not without purpose.
