Dr. M. G. Scarlett and his family: Jon Barry, Nancy, David, and Mrs. Scarlett. MTSU WELCOME AS NEW HEAD Dr. and Mrs. Scarlett were welcomed early in the Fall by members of the ASB at a reception held in their honor. S DR. M. G. SCARLETT Along with Fall, October brought to MTSU an enthusiastic, Pennsylvania-born yankee to occupy the position of University President vacated by Dr. Quill E. Cope last summer. From the first. Dr. Scar- lett indicated that he was impressed with the Uni- versity- — and the University returned this feeling for the man who so ably has assumed the gigantic task of acquainting himself with all aspects of Middle Tennessee State University. A native of Reading, Pennsylvania, Dr. Scarlett received his undergraduate degree at Catawba College, his M.A. at the University of Florida, and his doctorate at Oklahoma State University. Im- mediately prior to his appointment at MTSU, Dr. Scarlett served as interim Chancellor of Farmington State College, Maine ' s University system. The soft-spoken President summed up his plans for MTSU in the concluding words of his address to the University ' faculty early In October. I think that Middle Tennessee State University is a good, young university. I hope that we are going to be- come an outstanding university. For its growth, it is to be hoped that the university will dedicate it- self to meeting the needs of its students, aiming at the development of a climate of excellence In all areas of university life. At present Dr. Scarlett is concerned mainly with adjusting to the campus and the community, as hopefully they are adjusting to him. With the pres- ent as an indication, it seems likely that all will go well In the future. Coach Bubber Murphy and Dr. Scarlett welcome another Yankee to the Southland: new head fdotbali coach Don Fuoss of Purdue.
