Most of the new students attend one of the three summer orientation session, but many choose to come early and attend a session before classes begin in September. During the orientation session, the students are exposed to the college administration. They are instructed in the basic rules and regulations that govern student life at MGC. Finally, they receive advisement, and they register for classes. ARIE EN PPE TTT ITT ee eee ion es = Y Z. Winning 200 games as a college basketball coach is very much an achievement. But, winning 300 games as a college basketball coach is almost unheard of. For Middle Georgia College Coach Ben Rogers, number 300 came on Friday evening, January 25 against Gainesville Junior College. “It was quite an accomplishment,” Rogers said, “but it all goes back to the players that | have had over the years.” Rogers came to Middle Georgia College in 1968. Before that time, he had coached at Crisp County High School, Franklin County High School, and Thomson High School. He went from a 300-man program at Crisp County as football coach to a workable 20-man basketball program at Middle Georgia College. His first year, he was 7-2 at MGC, but that was not typical of things to come. The next season he was 1 4-I5. The following season, his program took off and he was QI-9. For his efforts, Rogers has been Region 17 (National Junior College Athletic Associa- tion) Coach of the Year three times. He has had state championship teams four years — in 1974, in 1978, in 1980, and in 1985. And, he has twice taken his teams to the national NJCAA playoffs. “We have had some very good players over the years,” Rogers continued. ‘We have sent 85 players on to four-year schools on scholarship. We have also had several players drafted for the pros, but none have elected — to sign.” For his efforts, he is averaging just over I8 wins per year. Rogers has had only three | losing seasons with the Warriors. Rogers, originally from Bainbridge, did — not play college basketball. Rogers was on the Troy State football squad during his collegiate years. “I played football,” he said, “but basketball was my love.” (kneeling) Ison, Clamonia Hardi , Lori H Ing, Quinn Woody Sally Ann Spauld R, standing) Tracy Butler, i= ae C = = 1S) ‘= © Zz a ai ) E is) i ey se) fe CG so ) fae bie} = (L to ‘nt i's ie ie a Taiy i “att (L to R, standing) Elaine Smelt, Belle Joiner, Jamie Dixon, Amy Trunnell, (kneeling) Ellen Bracewell, Lisa McLendon, Russell Hinson - Warrior, LeeAnn Daniels, and Monica West.
