Orientation serves to aquaint the new student with the community, the college, its faculty, its facilities, and its rules and regulations. The orientation program also serves as a testing ground to give college officials their first look at the incoming freshman class. About half of any given freshman class attend an orientation session during the summer quarter, but the largest gathering of first-time students always is the first three days of fall quarter. Former students and returning students are used to ease the transition from high school to college. The first three days are hectic to say the least, but it isn’t all work. A dance and the appearence of Kolisch served as entertainment for incoming freshmen, 1978. mm 1iNrwU Registration Fall-quarter registration is always marked by long lines, short tempers, and a feeling that the entire college is heartless. In the air is the mass confusion that comes with the opening of any school year. The lines to pay fees . . . The line to have yearbook and ID photos made. . . The line for a meal ticket . The line for a parking decal . . . The line to pull cards. . . The line to change cards that were just pulled. . . All are part of the registration process. One thing is for sure. Most students agree - one time is enough. Next quarter, pre-registration is the only way! Tired hikers expressed their eagerness to reach the top in statements like ‘‘When are we gonna get there?” “I’m tired!’ and “My feet won't go!”’ The tent life was a new experience for many of the campers who found no eijectricity for blow dryers and curlers, things that go bump in the night, and no soft mattresses. With a season record of 42-8 and the state and southeastern titles already under eir belts, the Warriors had but one title left to capture. NATIONAL CHAMPS. As the tournament began on May 26 in Grand Junction, Colorado, the Warriors ere still being given little or no chance to take home the title. After making short work of unbeaten Triton, Illinois, 16-4, the Warriors became ie team to beat. P anola, Texas, the team that would come back to haunt the farriors in later play, fell in the third round 16-4. Brookdale, New Jersey, went wn 12-4 on Tuesday and the Warriors seemed unbeatable. Yavapai, Arizona, gave le Warriors a scare on Wednesday but the bottom of the 9th, Tommy Dunbar rapped it up for the Warriors with a 7-6 score. Once beaten Panola put a sudden hault to the Warriors on Thursday with a 2-4 ss. That threw the tournament into sudden death, but Panola went home beaten | the Warriors took them 8-4 to bring home the title for Georgia. MGC set a national record for the most runs in the tournament with 59. The in marked the first junior college victory for a Georgia team. (MGC had one evious trip to Grand Junction in 1975 when they placed 3rd.) The Warriors ended their season with a 47-9 record. All-national tournament @m members included Derrell Baker, Dunbar, Jerome Whitfield, and Dennis lvarez. Jerry Haldeman was chosen best defensive player and Dunbar, with his .444 ‘tting record was tournament MVP. One other honor returned with the Warriors. MGC Coach Robert Sapp was med the National Coach of the Year. When the Warriors arrived at the Atlanta airport with the spoils of their trip, ey were greeted by over 100 MGC students, administrators, and Cochranites. They ere escorted back to Cochran where the entire town turned out to welcome their am home in victory. From “not more than mediocre” to ‘“‘doesn’t have a chance at the title’’ to ‘tional champs, 1979 was a year that will go down in the Warrior record books.
