Elvis Presley, the King of Rock and Roll, died, the farmers went on strike for 100% parity, and President Carter’s hand-picked cabinet crumbled. The biggest news event of the year, from the stand point of Georgia, was probably the nation-wide farmers strike. Led by Tommy Kersey of Unadilla, the organization tried to force state and federal governments into providing 100% parity income for the farmers. On a national level, Bert Lance, the Georgia banker from Calhoun who served as President Jimmy Carter’s budget director, resigned under pressure for his handling of banking procedures in his Georgia banks. In New York, the Son of Sam killer terrorized New York City. During the year, he was finally caught and tried for the killings. On a local scene, the Columbus strangier continued to terrorize that city. The Panama Canal was a hot issue on the national scene. Queen Elizabeth II celebrated her Silver Jubilee, and Princess Caroline of Monaco became engaged to Philippe Junot. Anita Bryant made the news headlines throughout the year as she campaigned against gay liberation. Voyager 2 was launched on a nine-year mission aimed at exploring the far reaches of the solar system. President Carter continued his foreign relations with visits by Prime Minister Menchem Begin and a personal visit to New Deli. Former Prime Minister Aldo Moro of Italy was killed by Italian terrorists. Tom Watson won the British Open and the Masters. Affirmed took the Triple Crown. And Reggie Jackson had five homeruns for the Yankees in the World Series. Deaths during the year included Elvis Presley, Bing Crosby, Groucho Marx, Hubert Humphrey, and Guy Lombardo. CBS’s M A S H Charlie’s Angels from ABC al Vg Quincy from NBC From CBS, the Lou Grant Show 977-78 could be called the year of the mini-series on American ‘'V. It also could be called the year of the great shake-up in rograming and in network executives. American television iewers saw such specials as Dallas, Wheels, Washington, Behind Nosed Doors, and the Money Changers. 1977-78 was the year of he situation comedy with ABC’s Happy Days, Laverne and shirley, Three’s Company, and Soap all taking top billing during e season. Not to be outdone, CBS had M A S H %, one of the ongest running sit-coms on TV today, One Day at a Time, and the leffersons. For the first time in the history of network ratings, BC moved ahead of CBS and NBC in the rating game during the 977-78 season. This rating jump prompted the other two etworks to shift time periods, and drop and add shows to try to egain top position in the rating game. 1977-78 was also the year hat two networks, ABC and CBS celebrated 25 and 50 years of ervice, ABC, in its silver year of service, recapped the past 25 ears in a four-hour special. CBS, completing its golden mniversary, recapped its past 50 years in a week-long elebration. As an entertainment medium, television during 977-78 offered just a little of everything for the television viewer. The Jeffersons from CBS Ge Barnaby Jones aired on CBS The Goodbye Girl from Warner Brothers ©1977 Saturday Night Fever from Paramount Pictures, ©1977 hn ai Wy ' | 20th Century-Fox’s The Turning Point, ©1977 | Woody Allen’s Annie Hall United Artist, °1977 Robert Redford in A Bridge Too Far, a United Artists | release, ©1977 977-78 was a year for great movies. Star Wars egan the movie season by becoming the largest elling movie in the history of the industry. Not to e out done, Saturday Night Fever ran, packing e houses, for week after week. But when the wards were given out, Annie Hall walked away ith just about everything. But that is not to say at the other movies of the year were not good. Jose Encounters of the Third Kind kept the world hinking about UFO’s and created a new trend of cience fiction movies. The Goodbye Girl touched he hearts of the world as did Julia. War movies vere again on the scene with A Bridge too Farand he Boys in Company C. Burt Reynolds, a Georgia oy, made good his offerings of Smokey and the Jandit, Semi-Tough, and The End. George Burns iaade his movie debut in Oh God! and Sylvester tallone took his place in the movie world with tocky and F.IL.S.T. For the avid movie fan, 1977-78 ras a rebirth of the movie industry and 1977-78 ras the year of the greats. Debbie Boone took top honors for having the number one single, You Light Up My Life, as number one and as being in the top 40 for the most weeks in the history of the chart. Fleetwood Mac with Rumors broke another record for the longest running top LP in the history of the chart. Another miles- tone fell to the wayside with the presentation of the 1978 Grammies. For the first time, the top honors went to two singers - Debbie Boone for You Light Up My Life and to Barbara Streisand for Evergreen. In the country music world, Waylon Jennings took top honors for Luchenbach Texas. A wrap-up of 1977-78 would not be complete without mentioning the Bee Gees and Saturday Night Fever. The Bee Gees had as many as three top ten records at one time from Saturday Night Fever. Songs from the Key of Life by Stevie Wonder and What a Differ- ence You Have Made in My Life by Ronnie Milsapp also were big sellers. Chrystal Gayle, Dolly Parton and Billy Joel all made significant contributions to the music scene during 1977-78. It was a year for trends in the music industry. Disco, a music trend that has been around for years, came into its own during 1977-78. “Hard” rock softened to soft rock and, of course, “Southern” rock was still very much a part of the music scene. To talk about soul - well soul music is here to stay, one DJ commented. “It is a part of the American music scene, and it is here to stay.” One significant music trend came, and probably went, during 1977-78. “Punk Rock,” with its violent performances and obscene gestures, didn’t seem to find a place in the American music scene. One more very important music “happening” happened in 1977-78. The country performers discovered that with just a little change in their performing habits, the rock market was not far away. It was quite a year, 1977-78, for the American music scene. Fall Quarter Orientation as in recent years, has become larger than Summer Orientation sessions. Over 1,500 students registered for fall quarter classes in the basement of Walker Hall. For many, college registra- tion was regarded as Close Encounters of the True Kind. The line in front of Sanford Hall seemed as if it would never move to those who were paying their fees. The students then went to have their I.D.’s and Yearbook pictures made. After the preliminaries, students had the chance to pull cards for classes. Through? Hardly. Spiritual leader of Temple Beth Israel in Macon, he spoke at the college under sponsorship of the Jewish Chautauqua Society. Rabbi Cohen’s presentation centered around Religion. “Brutality in the name of religion continues today in Northern Ireland, Israel, Lebanon, India, and Pakis- tan,” he said. “The Moslems killed some 20,000 to 25,000 Christians, but the silence of their fellow religionists oppressed the sensitive soul,” he continued. He further indicated the religious who, in every group, Jewish and non- Jewish, ‘‘grovel in the trivial detail and ignore the larger task.” Recounting the _ develop- ment of religion through the ages, he urged the audience to accept the modern concept that “does ‘not separate the Kingdom of God from our pressing human concerns on earth.” He quoted the reply by Micah, about 2,800 years ago, who answered the question “What does the Lord require of you?” with the answer, “Only to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.” Opening Convocation 31 . = oS am ee: 34 Club Carnival Club Carnival | One of the many highlights of October was the annual Halloween Club Carnival sponsored by the Presidents Club. The parade, including, bands, clowns, floats, and of course, beauties, stretched the entire length of main street from downtown to the college. The Warriors dropped their homecoming basketball game 89-81 to DeKalb Central. On Saturday evening, the Homecoming Queen for 1977-78 was crowned. It started off as a rather slow season for the Warriors. “We had the talent,” Coach Ben Rogers said, “but it took us a while to put it together.” At Christmas break, the team had a 7-7 record and no one would have given it any odds against becoming the 9th place national team. “Everyone had a job to do,” Rogers continued, “. . . and he did it well!” The 15-man team dwindled to 11 “super players,” and the march toward a berth in the NJCAA tournament came closer and closer. They matured just in time, and many of their early-season losses were very close. Sammie Ellis ended the regular season as the team’s top scorer, while Danny Boyd took the second-place honors and leading rebounder honors. “No one member of the team was the best. On any given night, any member of the team could be the hero,” Rogers commented. Given fourth place in the state, they had “only an outside chance” to go on to a national win. The 9th place national trophy sits in Rogers’ office. 44 Warrior Basketball if Ben Rogers. Coach Ben Rogers. Portly Coach Ben Rogers, according to the Macon Telegraph. In 1978 he succeeded in bringing national attention to Middle Georgia College. Coach Ben Rogers succeeded in giving Middle Georgia College its first national tournament victory in basketball. With a season of 20 and 13, the statistics don’t show MGC with national ratings, but the trophy still stands in Rogers’ office. He now has a record of 178 wins while coaching his ten years at Middle Georgia College. He also has the distinction of being Coach of the Year in Region 17 for 1978 and the Atlanta Tip-off Club’s Junior College Coach of the year. But that is not all. In 1972 and 1976, his teams were state runners-up. In 1974, they were state champs. He has had five seasons with over 20 wins. Rogers has had one player who was All- American and one that was Region Player of the Year. Richard proves to be a true example of evil but does so with such wit it is a joy to watch him convey the plot. Richard III shows how evil can flourish if society permits. People can only rid themselves of evil if they live up to the expectations they have for their leaders. The performance was given by National Players - a regular on the MGC campus. 60 Richard III Poetic Theatre The Double Entendre is a husband and wife team of teachers from Florida, Jim Powell and Georgia Newman. In tournament action, the Warriors couldn’t be beat. They took Gainesville 95-80, nationally ranked DeKalb Central 96-86, and Brewton Parker 77-62 to capture the state and the region titles. The {977-78 Warrior baseball season was expected to be “only fair” as the season began. With only four returning players, the prospects for a “better than average” season didn’t look very good for Warrior Coach Robert Sapp. As the season progressed, the four returning players and the 22 new players “jelled” and the Warrior machine rolled over teams all across Georgia. The first loss for the season came against ABAC in a conference contest very early in the year. The only other two season losses game against South DeKalb. The Warriors had another surprise in store for the Warrior fans. The Warriors began to be ranked nationally by the National Junior College Athletic Association. The first ranking of 16th “came as quite a surprise,” Sapp said. From that point, the team advanced to 12th, 6th, 5th, and finally to an all-time high ranking of 3rd just before the state tournament. But the overall season for the team was good. A finish of 38-3, .789, was more than Sapp had ever hoped for. The team averaged nine runs per game during the regular season and managed to break four all-time Warrior records. Jerome Whitfield broke the RBI’s record with 57 and tied the homerun record with 12. He also broke the most hits record with 65. Gerald Sharpe took the most walks record with 42 and the most home runs record with 54. Jerry Haldeman ended his batting season over .500 and Darrell Baker mounted a record of over .400. Dennis Alverez took the top season pitching record with a 7-0 mark. As the season concluded, five of the Warriors were on the All-Region team- Haldeman, Andy Micacchione, Baker, Whitfield, and Alverez. It was quite a season for a rebuilding Warrior team. 76 Warrior Baseball 2 Coach Robert Sapp. The man who took a team @ from the bottom of the rankings to a place in the national standings during the 1977-78 season. Coach Sapp came to MGC for the 1976-77 season after coaching in several high schools and one college during his coaching | career. He came to MGC at a time that the program was “a rebuilding program” and |needed some “really good leadership.” During Sapp’s first season, he finished with a 38-10 record. After that first season, he lost almost his entire squad to graduation. With only four returning players, his hopes for a good season were not very strong. But Sapp and his team fooled the critics and broke the odds. Sapp and his team finished the regular season 38-3 and went to the state tournament 4 third in the nation. “It was quite a season,” Sapp commented. “With only four players @ returning, I didn’t know what to expect. But | they played first class ball and came through for me.” Coach Robert Sapp, the coach that took four returning players and 22 rookies fe and came up with the best season record in s the history of MGC baseball. Miller spoke to a gathering of political science and history classes and to an audience of interested students, staff, and faculty. Miller related his thoughts on the higher education systems by commenting that, “We have a fine university in Athens, a fine school in Georgia Tech, Georgia State in Atlanta, but to often I feel that the smaller institutions such as MGC are forgotten by the ruling people in the university system.” Miller was honored following his speech with a reception and an informal gathering in Ebenezer Hall sponsored by the Criminal Justice Club. Guest Speaker for the occasion was Dean Emeritus William Tate, University of Georgia. Dean Tate, a colorful character known to UGA alumni across the country, spoke to the Honors Day gathering about the future and how the students would manage to get through it somehow! The biggest part of the day, of course, was the presentation of academic awards, Who’s Who awards, and awards from individual departments on campus. Highest sophomore academic honors went to Stuart Abney while freshman honors went to Alta Garrett. The ceremonies were followed by the annual Activities Honors and May Day festivities. Activities Honors Day climaxed the year of activities for MGC organizations. Top club awards went to SNEA, International Relations Club, and Quintas Stellas. Tom Hockenberry received the most active student on cam- pus award. Robin Becker received the first annual Dean Joseph Paul Vidosic award. The Warrior basket- ball team and the Kernel staff received special recognition award from President Alder- man for their achievements during the year. When the smoke of the election had cleared, Allison Rackley held the vice president’s slot, Suzanne McNease was the new secretary, and Mike Bedsole was voted to be the new treasurer. The office of president was not so easy to elect. Michael Reed emerged as the victor after a run off campaign with Phillip Thurmond. The hard-fought campaign netted MGC four new SGA officers. The Gong Show featured a grand show of six outrageous acts with “Bobby Baby” Harrison as the loveable M. C. One of the major acts, a new dance called “The Worm,” consisted of a culmination of wriggling, squiggling, and writhing across the floor. Another unbelievable and completely unnecessary act was that of the “Unknown Comic,” which for all practical purposes hopefully will remain unknown. A bold rock act portraying the group “Capital Funk,” was a colorful celebration of today’s trends in outrageous super soul. Then there was the zany act of those two Czech cuties, the “Warrenia Sisters.” The duo, who tried to sell their wares for as little as $1.00 (American), unfortunately was not given the proverbial gong. The judging of the show was in the unmerciful hands of Ray Paulk, Lori “J.P.” Walraven, Glen “Jamie Farr” Ashe, and Ms. Blue Argo. The “unprejudicied” judges selected the group “Synthetic Diamonds” as the winners, with their song “Little Darlin.” To end the show with a gong, the “‘Moppets’’ were awarded the door to opportunity. All in all it was a night that will remain Gong Show history. Eight couples, representing campus organizations or dancing as independents, began the 24-hour marathon dance contest. Dr. Moll related his experiences at MGC and compared the campus then and now. He told the graduating students that the future of America, economically, lies with the southeast. He went on to say that the future belongs to those individuals who are prepared to challenge it. Following Dr. Moll’s remarks, the graduating class received the traditional graduation “charge” from President Alderman and then associate degrees in arts, science, nursing, and business administration and one year certificates in surveying and secretarial science were granted by Dean Crider, Dean of Administration. fe Et abs Bie aN VT isntansgtantdieiniiiiisiie itty 5 ecb i § Kee +4 ey HUANiAsni ti astininisninygs es Oe abatement eo te A college by day is a place of learning.
