Walker Building was the mam facility of the Agri- cultural and Mechanical School for the Twelfth Congressional District which existed from 1917 to 1927. 4 HĀ me away from hā m, 50 YEARS OF History Middle Georgia College had its beginning in a de- nominational institution known as the College of the New Ebenezer Association. This association was largely composed of Baptist churches in Pulaski, Dodge, Laurens and Telfair counties. Plans for the first building were begun in 1883 and instruction was begun on January 10, 1887. There were approximately three hundred students, most of whom were from the Middle Georgia section, al- though a few students attended from neighboring states. During the early period the institution was divided into primary, intermediate, and high school departments. The opening of New Ebenezer College brought to this section educational and cultural advantages. The college operated until 1898, when, because of financial difficulties. The New Ebenezer Association discontinued its support. The presidents served as follows: P. J. King, 87-88; J. M. Kelly, 88-90; W. B. Seals, 90-93; E. M. Turner, 93-96; A. M. Duggan, 96- 97; and W. E. Jenkins, 97-98. The teacher with the longest tenure was S. C. Speer, head of the Com- merce Department, during Seals' and Turner's terms. In 1917 an agricultural and mechanical school for the twelfth congressional district was established to continue the educational services for the section on the same campus. It was chartered as one of the branches of the Georgia State College of Agriculture and Mechanical Arts, a department of the University of Georgia. There were five presiding officers: L. C. Hart, 1919-1920; H. L. Swain, 1920; J. W. Mosely, 1920-1922; T. M. Green, 1922-1926; and T. L. Everett, 1926-1928. On August 20, 1927, the Middle Georgia College Agricultural and Mechanical Junior College was es- tablished with Leo Hagood Browning, 1928-1929, as its only president. This, too, was a branch of the Uni- versity of Georgia. On August 28, 1929, the name was changed to Middle Georgia College, and the in- stitution was operated under a nine-man Board of Trustees. On August 27, 1931, the Board of Regents which is today functioning as a constitutional body assumed the function of the trustees, and the Middle Georgia College became a separate unit of the Uni- versity System of Georgia. It has had the following presidents: Leo Hagood Browning, 1929-1947; Lloyd A. Moll, 1947-1950; Lucien E. Roberts, 1950-1964,- and Louis C. Alderman, Jr., 1964-. Graduation Procession I I'U by Sanford Building. 50 YEARS OF Academics A stated purpose of the curriculum, as described in the catalogue of 1887, was to prepare pupils for business or for the Junior Class in Universities. Thus the junior college idea was present in the first plans made for the junior college of todayāMiddle Geor- gia College. Although the faces and number of academic person- nel has changed in the past fifty years, their product is the same. Yesterday's drawing students are to- day's draftsmen and engineers. The change from a family size faculty of six to a regiment of seventy to- day has created a new atmosphere in learning. To- day's student is confronted with a tidal wave of knowledge which is the result of the progress and advances of yesterday's students and faculty. Facul- ties year after year face the problem of advancing more and more knowledge which by past perform- ances shows a job well done. Future engineers in class The faculty 1923-24 9 50 YEARS OF Athletics Through the years Middle Georgia College has maintained a record in athletics that would be envi- able for any junior college. The various teams have won championships in football, basketball, baseball, and tennis. In the '30's and '40's, Middle Georgia's record was that of a powerhouse. Football was a major sport at Middle Georgia until it was disbanded because of lack of opponents close enough to the school to allow the team to play with- out missing classes. Many state titles were taken in this sport until this time. Basketball and baseball are still populor sports, al- though girls' basketball has been dropped for lack of opponents. Today enthusiasm for these sports is greater than ever. Middle Georgia has always been known as the place that supports its team. Yes, the past holds many pleasant memories and the future looks even brighter. To view fifty years of athletics is to pay tribute to those coaches who led the Warriors through the years: J. T. Considerable time has been given even in the days of Ebenezer to art displays, concerts, theat- ricals, and military drills. Numerous prizes were of- fered for excellence in certain subjects. Much interest was manifested in contests in oratory. During com- mencement week five days and nights of entertain- ment and reunions were set aside so that all students and citizens of Cochran might enjoy the gaiety. Usually prominent men were engaged for lectures. Now on the night preceding graduation, the alumni meet for dinner and companionship. Through the years clubs were begun to fill the needs of students, and as needs changed, some of the clubs were terminated. Among those no longer in existence are the Camera Club, the Veterans Club, the Biology Club, the Drill Team, and the Band. There are still many clubs, both old and new, which are active and are of great interest to the students. Included in these activities are the three oldest on campus: the Choir, the Ensemble, and Quintas Stellas. Dancing hasn V changed much! Hopeful and partially ed- ucated when they come to Middle Georgia, they leave with the training necessary to push them through more years of college and into influential, worthwhile, and profitable businesses. The faces, dormitories, and social functions have changed throughout the last fifty years, but the spirit stays the same even though the people come and go. Fifty Years of Progress at Middle Georgia College Progress has been the keynote on the campus of Middle Georgia College for the past fifty years. The past and its progress have led Middle Georgia to a prominent place in the ranks of the nation's junior colleges. From the classrooms, through the dormitory halls, and on into areas of student life, the past fifty years have seen rapid advances and growth in faculty, student life and campus facilities. The campus facilities now include three major class- room buildings, four men's residence halls, two women's residence halls, an expansive gymnasium, and a new library. Today, the Middle Georgia College student attends classes under the direction of a large and competent faculty. Course structure has been increased to in- clude technical and liberal arts courses for various majors. Graduates of Middle Georgia College have found little trouble in transferring to many of Georgia's four-year institutions. A careful cultivation of aca- demic life for fifty years has brought M.G.C. to its position of offering the finest in academic contribu- tion. In the area of student activities. Middle Georgia pro- vides opportunities for students to belong to organi- zations which are devoted to special interests. These include the math, science, sports, home economics, and journalism clubs which co-ordinate the varied activities of the college. Other groups recognize scholarship as well as leadership. Student government representatives are elected by the student body each year. For day-to-day relaxation, a favorite meeting place is the campus store, which rounds out the daily ac- tivities of each student. A new one-million-dollar student center-dining hall building is now in the planning stages. Continued progress has enabled Middle Georgia College to offer quality education in modern facilities and an atmosphere of friendship and learning. Middle Georgia College's very modern facilities are housed in more than twenty buildings on a campus of one hundred and fifty acres. To enhance the beauty of the campus and to add to the student's enjoyment of school life, M.G.C. has a three-acre pond, an indoor swimming pool, four tennis courts, an athletic stadium, a baseball field and several other playing fields. Roberts Memorial Library is a joy for any student to visit and makes studying a pleasure. One of the state's most modern science buildings, which is presently being enlarged, is located on the M.G.C. campus. New modern dormitories have been built to house the students. Middle Georgia College, which is always seeking to offer more to her ever increasing number of students, is planning among other new constructions a fine arts building. An aura of newness pervades the atmosphere as they move into the dorms . . meet the Dean of Men and Women . . get into the first line . have their pictures made . . counsel with advisors obtain class cards from Dr. Keeney attend class . study in the library read that letter from home eat meals in the dining hall meet friends in between classes . . gather for a coke and bridge at the Co-op when class is over. 20 21 u Art studtnii at work. Besides its modern facilities. Middle Georgia is proud of her faculty. Holding advanced degrees from such venerable institutions as Harvard and Columbia as well as from the best schools of the South, her teachers continually study in their fields, both at home and away at universities, in order to bring to the students the best instruction possible. From class lectures to laboratories, from library research to teacher help, students seek to learn about the world in which they live so that tomorrow they will be better informed citizens and more intelligent parents. Al- though preparing healthy productive citizens is the long range objective of education, academic pursuits also have their immediate rewardsādean's list, honor awards, honor societies, scholarships, and a personal feeling of satisfaction. 25 26 After the garnet From spectator to player the athletic department of Middle Georgia College has something to offer each student. From fall and winters basketball to spring's baseball, tennis, and golf, action and rivalry always run high on M.G.C.'s sports schedules with other jun- ior colleges. The pace is set for on-campus rivalry by the intramural teams each quarter. For a finishing touch the Warrior Cheerleaders spark a spirited cheering section and add beauty to many of these events. Students at Middle Georgia College have a wide range of activities which fill the hours not used and needed for studying. From sockhops to the formal dances the student has many opportunities to enjoy himself. Receptions and teas enhance the social life on campus. Concerts and lectures provide a part of the cultural life stimulated by classroom work. Variety in campus organizations provides the student with a chance to express himself through acting, writing, singing, or serving others. Those who can may play basketball, baseball, tennis or golf on the varsity teams or on intramural teams. Others just enjoy being spectators at these sports events. Of course, however, dating is the number-one activity! 28 Featured at Middle Georgia College in the fall is the annual Homecoming, highlighted by the crown- ing of the Homecoming Queen during the half-time of the basketball game which follows a busy day of decorating dorms for the competition and floats for the afternoon parade. The Miss Hilltopper Contest, sponsored by the annual, is held in December. The girl selected is presented in the school annual as rep- resentative of the ideal college girl. The Miss Fresh- man contest is held in February; talent and beauty are criteria. The May Court and Queen are selected by the student body in the spring to reign over the annual May Day festivities. Many concerts, dates, and dances bridge the gaps between the major func- tions of the college. As is evidenced by the offerings of Middle Georgia Col- lege, the young men and women of this area have available a standardized, first-rate junior college in which they can achieve in the areas of academics, sports, organizations, and daily living. rhe 1967 Hilltopper Is Dedicated to Mrs. Mary L. Forehand. Mrs. Mary Lancaster Forehand has endeared herself to hundreds of Middle Georgia students since joining the faculty in 1961. Unassuming and ever pleasant, site is a tireless guide and teacher Perpetually deepening her own knowledge with study and research, she brightens the world of literature for students in her classroom with analyses and comments that reveal āThe reason from the temperate will. Mrs Forehand pours mtfee 36 The Able President of Middle Georgia College Is Dr. Louis C. Alderman, Jr. i Since Dr Louis C. Alderman, Jr., became presi- dent of Middle Georgia College in 1964, the college has expanded in many respects. Besides witness- ing a phenomenal growth in student body and faculty. Dr. Alderman has secured the addition of many new facilities and has brought about such improvements on campus as landscaping and pav- ing Although active in civic and church affairs, I )r. Alderman devotes most of his time to overseeing the college operation and to directing the other administrative officers. Mis specific duties include preparing the annual budget, appointing commit- tees to advise and assist him in administrative duties, making recommendations to the Board of Regents, and conferring all degrees and certificates. He acts as official host to such visitors as Gover- nor Carl Sanders and Chancellor George Simpson. Though he is busy with his diversified tasks. Dr l.utien Emerson Roberts, it was opened for use in the summer of 1965. The library has a collection of some 22,000 volumes and subscribes to 250 periodicals and 13 newspapers. The club has five aims: (1) to develop teamwork and promote friendship among its members. (2) to develop leadership. Each year the Council sponsors Religious Emphasis Week, student services on Wednesday night, and other events of a religious nature. Dianne's pleasing personality and demure beauty met the judges questions with dignity and poise. They were impressed by her score of campus activities and honors, which include being in the May Court of 1966. being second runner-up in the Miss Fresh- man contest, being in the Homecoming Court, and participating in the activities of the Ensemble, Choir. Phi Theta Kappa. Student Activities Com- mittee. and Student Council. The Miss Hilltopper Contest, a relatively new activity at Middle Georgia, was organized to honor the most outstanding girl on campus. The nominees, chosen by the various campus organiza- tions. are judged on beauty, personality, scholar- ship, and participation in campus activities. This year the contest was held in the private dining hall of the college. Since it occurred only a few weeks before Christmas, a Christmas theme was used in the decorations and refreshments. Punch and cake were served while the contestants met the judges informally, and afterwards each girl was interviewed individuallv. Miss Anne Wood, Sponsored by Ensemble, First Runner Up Anne Wood, a consistent dean's list student with exceptional beauty and a sweet personality, tied for first runner-up. A member of Phi Theta Kappa, the Ensemble, the Choir, and the Madrigal Singers. Anne plans to use her talent in a musical career. Miss Donna Hardy, Sponsored by Quintas Stellas, First Runner-Up Donna Hardy, one of the two girls who placed second in the contest, made three A+ās fall quarter. Miss M.G.C. Miss MGC, Kay Shaw, is a secretarial major from Porterdale, Georgia. She was elected to the May Court last spring and chosen this year's Homecoming Queen. She is a member of Phi Beta Lambda, and she is secretary of the athletic department and sponsor of the āMā club. Kay is considering entering the l ni versit y of Georgia in the fall to study legal secretarial work. The Sophomore Superlatives are nominated and elected bv the entire student body. Any student of sophomore rank is eligible if he has an overall āCā average and has been a student at Middle Georgia College for the two consecutive quarters prececding his nomination.
