V 1 Dr. Donald Metz Academlc Dean Homes, stores, hotels, churches, and colleges develop climates This climate, or atmosphere shows what the place really is. A home may give a sense of relaxed, happy living or of con- fused and bitter tension. A hotel brings the impression of effi- cient and courteous service-or of sloppy and haphazard opera- tion. A church may strike one as cold and unfriendly, or warm and spiritual. A college, develops either a mature, exciting climate or an immature and boring atmosphere. A dynamic atmosphere means the acceptance of the chal- lenge of academic endeavor, the thrill of spiritual achievement, the satisfaction of social involvement. At Mid-America the aim is to combine creative liberal arts education with particular career education. There is no essen- tial conflict between the liberal arts approach and career educa- tion. We hope to continue to improve the areas of speech and Eng- lish, fine arts, modern language, psychology, sociology, religion, history, etc. At the same time we plan to offer quality education in teacher education business and pre professional studies Our new programs in nursing education, home economics and agribusiness are gaming increased attention We hope to construct a ca reer education building to house these important areas. We have completed ten years of operation. The wonderful pioneer days are over We intend to move to a new level of achievement The next ten years promise to be times of stability and growth a time when we develop a most exciting climate at MANC

Dr. Jerry Ketner Assistant to the President DIFFERENT WHERE IT COUNTS! Education DOES make a difference. Within the past several years serious questions have been raised about the worth of a college education. In scholarly journals, magazines and newspapers, critics have taken higher education to task for not meeting the employment needs of its graduates or of the job market. NEWSWEEK magazine's cover pictured two graduates in cap and gown, one shoveling dirt and the other using a power hammer. The caption was, Who Needs College? Despite cries to the contrary, I believe a college education is more important than ever and there is no better bargain, no better invest- ment in the future of men and women than higher learning. Some decisions are difficult, like choosing the right college-precisely, an UN- COMMON college-a college with the philosophy Different Where It Counts. Our college is uncommon in today's college market and we plan to keep it that way. Three areas are crucial to meet this objective: flj Spiritual fervor Cand we don't apologize for this priorityjg C25 Academic excellence fventuresonie and innovative, thanks to the creative ,minds and expertise of our Academic Dean and dedicated facultyg and Q35 Contagious enthusiasm Cthose individuals who are fortunate to achieve the most in life are envariably activated by enthus- iasm. Enthusiasm is infectious and so is the lack of itj. Come see us and you will find all three. Colleges, like churches and businesses, seldom rise above the level of leadership. President Smith provides quality leadership which makes harmony, high morale, and right timing for progress a reality. WHAT IS PUBLIC RELATIONS? Certainly it is not a new philosophy, program, or profession. It is not back slapping, putting on a good front, or even wearing a broad smile. It is not agreeing with people to make them feel good, or some utopian way of winning friends and influencing people. I believe it is simply doing the right thing in the right way and letting people know about it. Precisely, Public Re- lations is DOING and TELLING, building bridges of communication, both on campus and across our educational zone. As Assistant to the President with responsibility for the many aspects of development, I recognize that progress and success is not achieved at the planning session. Rather, it is the efficient and effective carrying out of those plans. Now in our 10th anniversary year, we intend to maintain a philosophy of CONQUEST not SURVIVAL. When you are committed to a college that is different where it counts and recognize that we're still building a reputation not resting on one, this makes the time and effort invested worthwhile. JERRY KETNER ASSISTANT TO THE PRESIDENT

Jim Smith Dean of Students The administration of Student Services is a most challenging and rewarding assignment. Not many persons are as fortunate as I to be involved with the personal lives of Christian young people who are preparing themselves for more effective service to God. I do not find today's students any less dedicated or sincere in their Christian committment than twenty-five years ago when I was a student in a Naz- arene College. A sense of community is the thrust of Student Services. It is not feelings of love that create community, but community that creates feelings of love. Community requires structure, but our rules and procedures are intended to implement an inner community of love and care. It is providential that I have experienced professionals assisting me in caring for the spiritual, social, and physical needs of M.A.N.C. students. The special touch of our Housing, Counseling, Health, and Food Service is our way of saying to all students that we deeply appreciate the opportunity of enriching your community life. It is my desire that when you browse through the Conestoga in years to come, that there will be continued personal growth as you re- minisce about our caring campus community.
