First year coach, Ron Hill, has high expectations for the 1978 season. He would like in his first year, to win the Dis- trict 10 championship and also win the 1978 NCCAA Tournament in Longview, Texas. Hill cites nine returning lettermen from the 1977 team as his nucleus. Leading the way is MANC's leading hitter, Matt Spencer. Hill remarks, that Matt Spen cer is the best catcher in the state this year. Also returning are three-year lettermen: Keith Burgat fcenterfieldj, who leads MANC in career homeruns, Phil Griffin Clst basej, who was 3rd in hitting with a .303 batting average, and Don Willard will hold down the hot corner and he also supports a .394 batting average, second behind Spencer last year. Also returning are outfielders Gary Spruill, Eldon Lewis and Dave Stewart. Last years starting right fielder Perry Stone also returns with his good credentials of experience and leadership. Coach Hill says that pitching will be the key factor in winning or losing this year. The leader of the staff will be two- year letterman Larry Steinmetz. Steinmetz was 3-3 last year. After Steinmetz MANC will search for some other potential starters, they are: Steve Auch Csophomorej, Brian Atnip ffreshmanj, Geron Stangland ffreshmanj, John Mosier ffresh- manj, Don Spencer Csophomorej, and Brad Remole fseniorj. Other new recruits are Dave Purdy ffreshmanj, he will work to nail down an infield spot and Jim Remole Quniorj, who will use his Junior College experience to hold down an infield spot. Coach Hill finally relates that MANC baseball could see their best season ever. He points out that the hitting will be a strong point again but then says pitching will be the key to MANC, in having a successful or mediocure year.
