PNP' JUQS U bl I' The Tenth Anniversary is here and to help cele- brate the MANC Cross-Country team began the year by setting the precedence for all MANC sports. The precedence was to win, to make this special year the best ever for athletics at MANC. The team won its first invitational in three years at Southwest Baptist College. At Graceland and Park College Invitationals this contingency of MANC athletes not only won the team title, but dominated the races. At Graceland they captured 13 of 23 medals and then a week later at Park, raced to the first four places led by Mike Coburn's fifth win of the year. Jim Coburn, Gary Ringhiser and Kirk Keller followed closely in the next three places. Outstanding team efforts in cross-country come when a coach can physically train and mentally motivate a group of runner's to keep pushing for five hard miles. Coach Gordon DeGraffenreid was such a coach. He can be credited with much ofthe sucess of the team this year. His duel record was 3-0 this year. Successful recruiting by a former coach and by Coach DeGraffenreid played an important role. Among the recruits was Mike Coburn. He was con- sistently the leading runner, winning six races and setting course records with each victory. Mike made history at MANC when he was selected All- American by the National Christian College Ath- letic Association. This was the first time such an honor was received by an athlete at Mid-America. Another freshman that kept Mid-America at the top was Kirk Keller. Kirk and Mike led a group of six freshmen that were the main stay of the young team. Doug Philip and Geron Stangland, two of the freshmen, ran fifth and sixth for the team this year Other freshmen runners were Terry Lawson and Steve Shott. This group of freshmen runners complimented the two that have been associated with cross-coun- try at MANC for four years now, Gary Ringhiser and Jim Coburn. This final year of cross-country was a productive way for these two to end their collegiate cross-country careers. Since their fresh- men year these runners have run consistently well and help develop the winning attitude that should continue with these freshmen. ll. - LZ: :CN 311521 .if ,-, .1 69, .if I '14 eg:
