Dr. Harry Russell Associate Professor of Speech Communication Among the rewards most to be desired by man is that of giving one's self to others. Teaching affords an excitment in discovering, explaining, exploringg and yet, for me to teach is to be a bit selfish, for as I teach, I also learn. Chaucer must have held a similar view, for in the prologue of his Canterbury Tales, the Scholar of Oxford is made to say . . . and gladly wolde he lerne, and gladly techef' At its best, learning is not work, it is pleasure. How better can one dis- cover his world than to do so as he aids and directs others in their learning experiences. Those who teach in the areas, sociology, psychology, and com- munication recognize the significant interface of the various con- tents. The recent liberation of the field of Speech to embrace, as well, to social sciences, had made possible the exploration of com- munication as a much broader discipline. As a result, the student of communication can now explore contents far afield from the tradi- tional fine arts oriented courses. As a social science-fine arts discip- line, the expanded content can be applied to a great variety of ca- reer-oriented areas of study. Teaching in a Christian college offers an opportunity to put education into its right perspective. The world is not ours nor do we owr the people in it. We belong to God, our Creator. The study of communication is one way to explore the world and the people God has made. Taken outside such a context, the teaching-learning interpnse deprives the participants of a valuable anchor for ideas and beliefs. After all, are not the words of Christ an accurate appraisal: 'L . . . for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speakethf' fMatt. 12:34j We, in communication explore those accnied experiences that comprise in us the abundance of our hearts.
