OUR SCHOOL 1833 1955 The frrst settlers came to the v1c1n1ty of Mrchxgantown 1n 1830 and planned for the frrst school rn the fall of 1833 1n a log cabm The followlng summer a one room log school house was erected It had greased paper for wmdows and home made benches erght or ten feet long for seats Th1s school house was used unt11 I86O In 1860, the one room house was remodeled and a two room frame house was erected wh1ch was used untrl 1878 By th1s t1me the two room bu1ld1ng was too crowded to accommodate the rncreaslng populatlon That summer a four room brrck bu1ld1ng was bu1lt For several years only three rooms were used Th1s burldmg burned November I5 1905 By the fall ot' 1906, a burldrng was constructed at a cost of S30 000 It was three stones hlgh At the tlme II was thought that thrs bulldrngcontamed more room than would ever be used In 192.4 838,000 was appropr1ated to burld an annex to relxeve the crowded cond1t1on Wtth the 1ncreas1ng enrollment 1n our school an urgent demand for more room st1ll ex1sts We w11l always chensh our memory of our dear old school and wlll hold a place rn our hearts for the pleasant years we spent there SCHOOL MOTTO Learmng IS Wealth to the Poor An Honor to the Rrch An A1d to the Young, And a Support and Comfort to the Aged
