CIASS PRIIPHHZY On October 16, 1963, I found one of the biggest surprises in my life in my mail-box. It was an invitation to the Michigantown Alumni Homecoming Dance. The dance is to be held in the new gym at Michigantown with Ray Anthony furnishing the music for the great event. The invitation also stated that I was to be on hand to see and talk with the 1953 graduates. The week before the dance, lwas invited to be the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Mark Newell fthe former Judy Bowenj the evening of the social event. Yes, they live in Michigantown. While we were preparing lunch, Judy told me that she was now an X-ray technician and that Mark is a barber and T. V. man. ln addition to being a good wife, she is also very busy with their two boys and one girl. I could tell that their family life was indeed a happy one. After lunch, we soon were off to the dance. Across from our table I was surprised to see Mr. Philip Reed and just like Phil, when he spies a girl alone, he rushed over and asked me to dance. l learned that Phil is now living in luxury in Holloywood. When I asked if he was married, he said. No, l haven't taken the fatal step yet. but later in the evening I learned that he had been dating Rita Hayworth and he is soon to be her eighth mistake . When I went back to the table, I noticed Mr. Howard Peter and his wife, the former Patsy McKinsey, come sweeping in, so I went over and greeted them, Patsy had on a beautiful and rare fur coat, which she said she make Howard buy her when he decided to buy their cadillac. Howard said that he now has a large dairy farm northwest of Michigantown and has life easy . Howard and Patsy are the parents of twins, a boy and girl. As Iwas walking back to my table, I heard my name and turned around to see Mike Wayts, Don Ward, and Dick Shoup, at a table with four unidentified girls at the next table. Dick told me that Mike was still trying to find himself a wife: but Don said that he and Dick were not ready for matrimony. Dick went on to say that immediately after school he, Don, and Mike took a trip over the U.S. and settled down in Nashville, Tennessee, where they bought a large brewry. It is the largest in the world. While talking with these three 1953 graduates, I couldn't help but notice two happy couples back in the corner in fact I hated to interrupt their happy conversation. To my astonishment is was the former Miss Carol Nunnally and her husband, San Huffer, and Miss Arlene Record and her escort. Carol said that the night of graduation, Sam surprised her by coming home and that they immediately got married. They went to Phoenix, Arizonia and live in a beautiful ranch style house. In addition to her husband's T. V. and radio shop wher she is his secretary, they are the parents of darling twins, a boy and girl. While Sam and Carol danced, I turned my attentions to the other couple, and to my surprise, Arlene wasn't married. Carol told me later that Arlene and Bill were to be married soon and were going to spend their honeymon abroad. Arlene studied at Purdue, and now is teaching in Florida. She said that after a 2 month vacation, she is going to accept an offer to plan interior decoration for movie stars' homes in California. She seemed to be very happy. As I was preparing to go powder my nose, some one tripped over my foot and fell. It was Mr. Gene Payne. After picking himself up, I asked him what he was doing now. He said that during school he was so fascinated by basketball that he decided to become a coach. After finishing college, he signed a contract to coach the Muncie Bearcats. He has encouragingly guided them to two state championships. By the way girls, Gene is still single. While talking with Gene, the spotlight was turned on a new comedian. To my surprise, it was Mr. James G. Caldwell. Gene told me that James had never decided what he was going to do after graduation: but that he had married Peggie and he is now a comedian. Next the spotlight turned on a dancer who had been a former burlesque queen. She was the wife of Mr. Donald Conrad. They live in Texas where Don owns twenty oil wells, Suddenly I heard laughter from the next table, it happened to be two elegible bachelors--Jack Cole and Robert Brant. It seems that Jack had been telling Bob of his latest romance and now his third divorce. Jack served as a captain in the Marines for four years, then bought a resort in Florida. He runs weekly beauty contest there and is quite famous for finding hidden beauties. Bob told me that after graduation, he started washing windows for a firm in New York. Just last week, Bob was elected as vice-president of the firm. A very lovely girl interrupted our conversation to ask Bob to dance, she said that I was wanted in the back of the gym. It was the former Miss Marlene Patchett who wished to talk with me. She asked me to join her and her husband, a graduate of the 1953 class from Mulberry. Marlene told me she became a registered nurse and later was supervisor of the 0.8. ward in the Clinton Co, hospital. She and her husband and quintruplet girls are very happy on a 500 A. farm. Our waiter happened to be Jim K. Caldwell who is also single. He stopped long enough to tell me that he owns a service station in Indian- apolis and one in Michigantown. He has never found the right girl for a wife. I asked Marlene if she knew what Tom Lyrle is doing now, and she said that he is a pilot for T.W.A. After 2 years at Purdue he joined the Air Force. While I talked with Marlene, Major Wayne Walker and the former Mary Hague walked past our table. They live at Govemor's Isle in New York with their two darling daughters. At the next table was a very happy couple. It was Miss Mary Hutchens and her escort. Mary and I had a very delightful conversation. Mary is a beautician in Indianalolis and lives in a pent-house. She is engaged and is planning on a July wedding. She seemed very happy. I asked her if she had seen Ellis Richardson and she said that he was still Michigantown. and he also has a service station. What competition Michigantown must have at the service stations. Mr. Ralph Webb was unable to make it to the dance, because his wife had been ill. Ralph married Miss America of 1955. After graduation Ralph attended Butler wher he graduated. As I was leaving I couldn't help notice a lovely and charming aged couple near the door. It was Mr. Rule, our class sponsor. and his lovely wife Betty. Coach Rule had just coached the Gander: to a State Championship, as we all remember. When I got home, I couldn't help thinking what a success the graduates of 1953 are and what a nice Alumni Association Michigantown now has. It was one of my most enjoyable evenings.
