At the beginning of the school year, the universityis growth was made graphically apparent. An im- pressive statistic came to life in the form of nearly 20,000 students at Registration. From the guileless fresh- man to the battle-scarred senior, the war of the class cards swept over its victims and victors, leaving frazzled nerves on both sides of each cluttered and busy table. Certainly recent years have seen nearly as many students pass through the Crowded Aud in the hectic days of Registration, but this year seemed somehow different. Perhaps it was simply the change in the route of the gauntlet of rubber stamps and eagle-eyed checkers, or perhaps the increased tuition. The change may have come from any number of reasons, but the most likely seemed to lie in the tempo of the year, one of growth becoming stabilized. For though the numbers were greater, if such a thing can be, Registration was ordered congestion. THE MACHINERY of Reg- istration met an army rein- forced every 15 minutes. IGOR, THE friendly iguana, rests with Ray Pawley, MSU herpetology major, after his unescorted tour of East Lansing. . H- AS A PRELUDE to Explorer and Vanguard, Sputnik dominated the October news and turned the eyes of MSU students skyward. If the story of a school year be- gins with the universityis spirit and breadth and unfolds through its major activities, it is surely punctuated by the many small but distinctive events that occur out of the main stream. Igor Roams Summer Campus An exclamation point in this yearis story began with an East Lansing housewifeis scream and was climaxed by the capture of one of the most elusive fugitives ever to confound the local gendarmerie. The culpritis name was Igor, an honestly lovable fraternity mascot, but unfortunately, an extremely large and ugly lizard with a natural aptitude for frightening women. Happily, Igor was at large for only a short time, kept pretty much to himself and was returned to his master with no damage done. CAMPUS APPLE addicts found an ample supply avail- able from this new machine. 9
