Choose a star for your goal in life-some- thing bright, high, inspiring-for by reaching high we make each day worth living. 3 Assembly Contents Student Life, , ,, Administration and Faculty Classes , Activities Athletics Index Advertisements Bonnie Malone, Marianne lels, and Carol Prather are iust a few of the girls working as secretaries for the teachers during the business ma- chine class. lf you were to take a trlp with us through a typical school day, you would be likely to see many of the scenes on the following pages. ln the pictures you will see portrayed the everyday life of Miamlsburg High School students. A typical scene between classes at Miamisburg High School is por- trayed by Shirley Hill, Vernon Schro- eder, Bob Cook, Pat Hecathorn, Charles Railey, Saundra Egan. Reading Left to Right: Some of the future artists of Mi- amisburg are Charles Crone, John Drayer, Carolyn Gayer, Charles Leist. A stitch in time saves nine, as the following girls are finding out: Ellen Brooks, Lola Hetzel, Joan Blair, Wanda Lynch. Trying to learn the facts and fig- ures of Mrs. Schmitz's arithmetic class are Dick Hall, Jo Thielman, Fred Schmidt, Bob Spivey, Tom Weller, Ronnie Wells. Writing dates of American history under the watchful eye of Mrs. Di- Matteo is Virginia Buckley. Subiects and predicates are what Miss Carr wishes the following peo- ple would learn: Wanda Lynch, Joy Grooms, Alice Gibbs, Peggy Robinson, Margaret Abney, John McGohan, Ron- nie Rockwell. Ohl My aching back, cry Vir- ginia Williams, Eileen Wantz, Jaye Stebbins, Hazel Shilt, Carol Stevens, Shirley Hitte, Norma Wheeler. gs--Q Arlene Overholser, .ludy Russell and Kay Costello are taking short- hand from Miss Nicholson in lhe hope of acquiring a secrelarial iob someday. Learning abou? our world in Am- erican Hislory are Judy Urich, Nancy Korn, and Bob Gengler. Memorizing poelry is iusl one of the iobs lhat lhese seniors are doing for Mrs. DiMalleo: Saundra Egan, Marion Kidwell, Ronnie Babinglon. Learning mechanical drawing un- der lhe walchful eye of Mr. Vesper are: Roy Kidwell, Pele Slone, lloyd Myers, Phil Weber, and Lee Weidner. Sludying hard in Mr. Roehm's phy- sics class are Tom Drake and Bob Hollfman. The music you hear the ninth per- iod every day is made by the band. These are iust a few of the music makers: J. Gastineou, B. HoHman, G. Bennett, A. Oyler, N. Nicholas. The seniors had an election in government this yeor too. Casting their votes are B, Malone, B. Martin, B. Hoffman, J. Shade. Basketball is o rough game, as the boys in gym are finding out: M. Kidwell, A. SteHen, G. Harrington. Biology workbooks are iust a few of the things Mr. Roehm uses in his classes, M. Light, A. Gilbert, R. Doan. Learning Latin is not easy, as the following students will tell you: E. Zechman, J. Kinderdine, D. Schmidt, S. Schroeder. Trying to eat and talk at the same time is a hard iob, as the following found out: S. Collins, R. Phillaboum, M. Shoffner, J. Kerns. yr-N ,l La, G. Brandon, D. Pence, R. Emby, J. Bartlett, W. NeH, F. Young, J. Kinderdine, Board of Education Mlamisburg schools are growing more each year. With each year's growth the problems of the Board of Education become varied and more difficult. This group of men tries to solve school problems. Ray Emby, president of the organization, is also a clerk in the Order Division at Frigidaire. Serving as vice-president is David C. Pence, who is an Employee Rep- resentative at Frigidaire. Working along with the Board of Education is James C. Kinderdine, General Foreman at Delco, Dr. Glenn C. Brandon, Veterinarian, Wilbur C. Neff, Assistant Director of Personnel at Moraine Products, and James Bartlett, the Board's first full-time clerk. It is quite a coincidence that three of these members were students at the same time three were serving as faculty members of M. H. S. MR. FRANKLIN M. YOUNG Superintendent Mr. Young has served Miamisburg High School for twenty-six years. During those years he was a teacher, principal, and is now the superintendent of schools. Mr. Young is doing a remarkable iob as he meets the prob- lems of a growing school. Besides his school duties he is the secretary of the Southwestern District of the Ohio Athletic Association, and in January of 1954, was elected to the State Board of Control of the Ohio Athletic Associ- ation. 10 Principal Mr. Mittler, who is well liked by both students and faculty, has been principal of Miamisburg High School for six years. During this past year he has had much with which to contend. The new schedule that was started this year gave him many headaches. He is the advisor of The Blue and White, Student Council, and the National Honor Society. His advis- ory duties do not end here. He also counsels 750 high school students. .,., r,,,.-,.. Viclor Hill, Burton Zimmerman, Mike Gilberl, Elmer Morningslar. Working in the cafeleria al noon are Mesdames Mildred Hoffman, Virginia Meddler, Ina Recher, Myrlle Hill, Rulh Harris, Edna Gunder, Myrlle Garbaugh, Leona Ridinger, Louise Penwell, Helen Coslello. i Every morning the first and second periods you will find Ernest Adkins, Ralph Belvo, and Jack McKin- ley, with several other senior boys, working in auto mechanics. Clackity, clackity is the sound these people hear every day as they pound away at their typewriters: Eileen Wantz, Judy Manuel, Bill McGohcn, Aleta Stra- censky, Rose Phillabaum, June Belvo, Ruth Ellis. Oh! What is that horrible smell? Don't be alarmed, it is just Mike Shahan, Jerry libecap, Shirley Hill, Genevieve Harrington, Jim Gustin, and Jim Gas- tineau, working in the chemistry lab. Watch that tree, cries Mr. Heistand to Ramon Maxwell, Marilyn Fowler, Joan Blair, Pat Hecathorn. Walsh your English, is what Mrs. Parkhurst is telling the following English students: Carolyn Urschel, Joyce Weyandt, Charles Cowsert, James Wagner, Linda Babington, Lizzie Turner, Dave Furnas, Hattie Penrod, Julia Johnson, Lois King, Ann Hapner, Dick Purdy. 55:-. Classes are perhaps the most rominent f groups. p way o distinguishing people into ln our stargazing of present and future, it is evident what a great ettect divid- I . . ng us into classes has made In our school years. When the members of the class of '55 ' ' entered the first grade, the magorlty of them were together and remained that I way unti the end ofthe iourney this year. Of course, some moved away, some new stud nt h ' e s came ere, and some others quit for one reason or another, but many of th ' em who started together finished the same way. This is true not only of the class f . o 55 but also, of all the classes. Many lasting friendships have been formed through this close association. Mr. Shevelow's students are uttin t p g o use the theories that he has taught them in geometry. They are Rosius Doan, This is a typical scene on Sixth Street at three o'clock David Dunkelberger, Richard Erbaugh, Judy Fleischman. when the students of M. H. S. are going home. Eighth Grade This year's eighth grade class is the largest class in Miamisburg High School's history. The class has 190 members. Because one of the home rooms was not yet completed, Mr. Duffee conducted his classes in the high school gym during the first semester. The class sponsors are Mrs. May Schmitz and Mrs. Geneva Parkhurst. HOME ROOM 6 FRONT ROW: C. Wright, J. Moore, C. Wickline, J. Bentield, D. Denman, F. Brewer, W. Rose, D. Chastain, J. Barbee, A. Monthly meetings were held, and programs were carefully planned to promote the club's purpose of gaining a more thorough knowledge of Roman life, customs and language, understanding better the practical and cultural values of Latin, and arousing interest in this language. At the October meeting an old Roman custom was re-enacted when the Cumaean Sybil told the fortunes of members from leaves. At the November meet- ing members donated food and clothing for needy people. As each person pre- sented his contribution, he gave the Latin name for it. In December an Informative panel discussion comparing our Christmas with the Roman Saturnalia was the feature of the program. The entire group went caroling after the meeting. First-year Latin students were guests at the January meeting when Roman sports were discussed and demonstrated. At the February meeting 50 Latln l students were formally initiated, and these new members provided the March program. The year's activities were concluded with a banquet in April. The officers for the year were Lolly Stock, president, Marilyn Rudy, vice presl- dent, Sue Schroeder, secretary, Diane Schmidt, treasurer, Ellen Zechman, historian, and Mrs. Dolores Short, adviser. Varsity Cheerleaders On Friday evenings from the beginning of school till early spring you will usually find these girls leading the cheers at football and basketball games. Dolores Hemelgarn, senior, has completed her third year as cheerleader. Donna Baker, who is only a iunior, has already completed four years, which is quite a record. Ola Branham and Mariorie Whitman, sophomores, have com- pleted two years. These girls had the honor of being the first cheer- leaders to lead cheers in front of our new stadium. 70 4g13t FRONT ROW: J. Hoerner, G. Shilt, R. Bartley, D. Baker, L. Weidner, R. Grimm, D. Varsity Football The 1954 edition of the Miamisburg Vikings Football team finished their season with a re- spectable 7-4 record. It was a successful season in spite of the fact that most of last year's siege guns graduated. The Vikings were third in the MVL, behind Greenville and Xenia Central. They opened their season with two straight defeats at the hands of Cincinnati's Old Woodward and Franklin, but proceeded to bounce back with strik- ing wins over Fairmont, Sidney, and Troy. On the night of October 22, Greenville marred Miamis- burg's homecoming with a 49-26 victory. The MIAMISBURG VIKINGS SEASON'S RECORD Vikings returned to the victory path with two easy wins over Fairborn and Piqua. On November l2, with second place in the balance, Xenia's Buc- caneers administered a 36-6 drubbing to the Vik- ings. The next week Miamisburg closed their season with a 27-6 win over Dayton Fairview at High School Stadium. Several Senior Vikings were named to various all-league teams. They include Bob Schaefer, Dave Hoerner, Herman Myers, Ronnie Laughlin, Doug Schmidt, Dan Shell, and Bill McGraw. FINAL M. V. L. Varsity Basketball The i954-55 Viking basketball team, chilled with the loss of six lettermen, including the entire first team, rolled up a not-so-impressive record of six wins and ten losses. The M. V. L. standing ap- peared a little better with a four and three record. Miamisburg, as in the past, started slow, losing seven out of the first ten games. At this point, however, things began to look better. Pete Stone, who was later in the season to break the school scoring record of 30 points held formerly by J. Reed and P. Shafer, become eligible to participate. Joe Pollock began to score to such an extent that he claimed the undisputed title of M. V. L. scoring champ. All of the players improved with experi- ence. Climaxing the season, the Burg turned in an excellent showing in the Class A District los- ing to Chaminade by 2 points, 61 to 59. MIAMISBURG VlKlNG'S SEASON RECORD M. V. L. Freshman Football The Viking Frosh, under coaches Dale DuFfee and Donal Thayer, recorded a 3 and 3 mark for the 1954 season. The freshmen posted wins over Xenia Central, Fairborn, and Oakwood. Losses came at the hands of West Carrollton's undefeated Pirates, Fairmont and Franklin. The 1954 season was the most successful since the 1951 season of 3 and 1. 77 W 2: D, Hall, L. Myers, K. INSET: Coach Da Reserve Basketball The T954-55 Viking reserve team turned out to be the victim of 13 of their opponents, establishing a 2 and 13 record. Coach Dale Duf- fee's boys started their season with a loss to Beavercreek. Thereafter followed a very disappointing season, both to the coach and to the boys. The reserves did manage to defeat talented West Carrollton and Sidney. Losses came at the hands of Fairview, Trotwood-Madison, Mon- roe, Fairmont, Springfield Public, Xenia, and West Milton. This team, however, did learn a few things from the old proverb, Experience is the best teacher. Experience in their case turned out to be rather costly. But records do not always tell the whole story. These boys have come a long way and will, we hope, develop into the stars of tomorrow. 78 TOP PICTURE: P. Stine, G. Wade, D. Penwell, M. Shafer, H. Junior High Basketball Q Coach George Shevelow's seventh and eighth grade basketball team finished their campaign with a slate of tive wins and six losses. The victories came at the expense of West Carrollton twice, Franklin, E. J. Brown, and Oakwood. Defeats came at the hands of Xenia twice, Franklin, E. J. Brown, Fairborn, and Fairmont. Their potentiality was realized in the last two games when the team scored 5l and 53 points respectively. Freshman Basketball This year's frosh squad, under Coach Donal Thayer, posted a mediocre 5-7 record. The record, though not so impressive, was run up against rather strong opposition including Fairmont, Xenia, Chaminade, and West Carrollton. The team defeated Germantown twice, Franklin, West Carrollton, and Xenia, and they lost twice to both Fairmont and Chaminade, and return contests to West Carrollton, Franklin, and Xenia, including the post-season tournament. In the Van Buren Town- ship Tournament, the small Vikings were defeated by both Xenia and Fairmont by the respective scores of 37-35 and 47-39. FRONT ROW: N. Schenck, D. Shell, D. Stalder, K. Boys, especially the younger group, literally flocked to Harmon Field to fill the shoes ofa number of '54 graduates. ln the eighth and ninth grades the participation was great enough to warrant a junior high team with a separate schedule. The varsity team had meets scheduled with Fair- born, West Carrollton, Centerville, Xenia, Fairmont, Piqua, and Monroe. They also participated in an lnvitational Meet at West Carrollton with Lebanon, Harveysburg, Germantown, Jefferson, and Centerville. Special meets that the l'-755 track team participated in included Springfield Relays, April 16, Mansfield Relays, April 23, Troy Relays, April 30, Dayton Relays, May 3, and Miami Relays, May 6. The team also took part in the Miami Valley League meet May 9 and ll and the Dayton District meet on May 14. 80 The Viking baseball team, featuring an experienced, mainly iunior- senior team, played a rugged schedule this season, including two games each with Middletown, Fairmont, Xenia, Franklin, and Hamilton. Seven lettermen were back from the 1954 team. They were Tom Sharritts, Doug Schmidt, Terry Kissick, Herman Myers, Jack Wantz, Dick Weidner, and Randy Bartley, four of whom were seniors. The coach, Dale Duftee, experienced his first year at the helm of the squad. The boys worked hard and proved to be keen students of baseball. The team was handicapped by the loss of several pitchers from last year's squad, and the inexperienced pitching corps took some time rounding into form. Baseball FRONT ROW: J. Wantz, D. Weidner, D. Two returning letter- men, T. Drake and J. Petzold, made up the nucleus of the team and were supported in their efforts by first-year men L. Anderson, C. Crone, J. McGohan, W. Penrod, and E. Ginter. Two freshmen, Martin and Mil- ler, although ineligible because of age, spent the season improving their game for future years. League matches were scheduled with Fair- mont, Xenia, Troy, and Fairborn. Other matches included Franklin, West Carrollton, Middletown, and Hamilton Catholic. The Vikings also par- ticipated in two invitational meets, Miami Valley League and Dayton District. FRONT ROW: J. McGohan, E. Ginter, L. Anderson, Coach T. Baker. ROW 2: T. Drake, B. Martin, W. Returnees from the 1954 team are John Drayer, Joe Anderson, Mike Shields, Mike Shahcin, and Jim Gostineau. They are the boys who make it possible for the team to function properly. These managers' many duties include keeping equipment, uniforms, and players in tip- top condition.
