Last October, the 1954 MIRUS staFl chosen by the advisor, Miss Elsass, began the enioyable but ditticult task of prepar- ing an annual which would summarize the events of the school year. With Bar- bara Stupp as editor, the group worked diligently throughout the year from the first day ot subscription selling until the tinal piece ot copy was removed from the typewriter and sent to the printers. Aiding the editor in key positions were: Larry Roush, business manager, Don Williams, advertising manager, Dave Frederick, art and layout, Don McLaughlin, photography. F.4- Foreword On the pages of this book we have attempted to record indelibly the events of one of the hap piest years of our lives. May this MIRUS help you to relive now the ex periences of the it prompt mony term at Miamisb Dedication This year's Mirus is gratefully dedi- cated to Mr. Sonander in an effort to pay tribute to his steadfastness and loyalty to Miamisburg High School. ln his varied roles as teacher of Spanish and world history, class sponsor, and athletic and band booster, he has be- come well known to the students as in- structor, advisor, and friend. ..5.. past year and in the future may fond memories of the l953 54 urg High School. Board of Education On numerous occasions during the year, the lights in the Memorial Building conference room burned brightly until the small hours of the night while this group studied and deliberated over the problems and policies involved in the successful operation of the Miamisburg Public Schools. The students were fortunate to have such a group of far-sighted and progressive individuals working on their behalf for the betterment of a constantly growing school system. In addition to President Neff, Vice-President Emby and Clerk Barlett, completing the roster of the Board of Edu- cation were the three newly elected members: Mr. James Kinderdine, Mr. David Pence, and Dr. Glen Brandon. -3- 'FK V tn Mr. Franklin M. Young Principal During his sixth year as principal of M. H.S., Mr. Mittler once again was the main force behind an efihcient and well- organized school program. Added to his regular guidance and administrative duties were: sponsorship ot Student Council, Na- tional Honor Society, Quill and Scroll, and BLUE AND WHITE. He also quite compet- ently fulfilled the duties required ot the position of acting Athletic Director. Superintendent Since his appointment as superintendent in l943, Mr. Young has played an active role in the development and expansion of the Miamisburg Public Schools. Year after year, the problem ot inadequate facilities to meet the sharp rise in enrollment has become more acute. He has utilized every possible means in order to maintain high educational standards locally. Mr. Louis F. Senior Class Numbering over one hundred students, the largest senior class on record at Miamisburg, completed an activity-packed year. The members played an important role in the success of the school in the field ot athletics. ln service to the school, the class again led the way for underclassmen. Seniors held key positions in virtually every maior organization. Two members of the class gave unlimited time and eiifort in the emcient operation of the visual aids program of the school. Included on the schedule for the year was the senior visitation of industry in Dayton on the annual B.l.E. Day. Seven seniors partici- pated in the Dayton Council on World Atifairs Tour to Washington and New York. Career con- ferences were also held during the year for the class. ln April, Double Door , a three-act mystery was presented as the class play, with Shirley Scheu, Nancy Brown, and Bill Starner cast in the leading roles. Graduation week was a full one, and the seniors decorated for the Prom, practiced for baccalaureate and commencement, and picnick- ed at Armco Park at Middletown. The climax of the year arrived on the night of May 27 when diplomas were awarded to the deserving senior class. Sandra Martz, Gloria Hottle, and David Hirst received the honors of ranking as the top three members of the class scholastically. ..'l4T Gi DAVID ACORD Intramural Volleyball 2, Intra- mural Soccer 2, 3, Miami Uni- versity Science Day I, Allied Youth 2. yn , , CL f 455' I f I' I , X661-. ffl C V , JOHN BEALS Band 3, 4, Minstrel 3, 4, Home Room Finance Chairman 2, Hi- Y 2, 3, 4, Hi-Y Vice-President 4, Miami Scholarship Team l, 3, Senior Scholarship Test 4, Chemistry Essay Contest 3, Mi- ami University Science Day I, Tennis 4, BARBARA BENNETT Home Room Property Chairman I, Chorus l, 2, 3, 4, Student Council I. Carrying out an Hawaiian theme, the Junior-Senior Recep- tion, which highlighted the year's social activities, was one of the many indications of the unity ofthe class of '55. In October, the class joined with the other Montgomery County juniors and participated in the annual Career Day Conference in Dayton. The juniors traveled to Moraine City to visit the large Frig- idaire plant there, in February. Sponsoring dances was a favorite social activity ot the mem- bers ot the class. The Basket Ball, and the Platter Party were two of the events which attracted crowds of fans after basketball and football games. Advising the class capably were Mrs. DiMatteo, Mrs. Moore, and Mr. Shevelow. Tragedy struck the school in the spring and the junior class lost its secretary when Barbara Ridinger was claimed by death in an automobile accident. The class joined with the student body and contributed to a memorial tor Barbara. FIRST ROW lLeft Io righll S. Courtney. P. Marlin. F. Parrish. R. Bosore. V. Taylor. J. Marshall. J. McCullough. J. The season ended by the band's contribution to the min- strel, and its own spring concert in May. --, 56 ,U 5. ...Q-x--..,:,,:.-w,.i -T 331 ,:.,? ,-in, ,q,:.h 2 ' ' V, 3 ' 'V ' M , ' 5.1 ,Wi R v V, 14' -I 1 '.' Junior Class Play The life of the lovable Foster family and its unpredictable daughter, Judy, was brought to the stage of the Memorial Building last No- vember, when the Juniors presented A Date with Judy. The audience greeted with hilarity the antics of Judy and her boyfriend, Oggie Pringle, as they became involved in one es- capade after another. Playing the parts of this teen-age couple were Roberta Harrington and Tom Drake, supported by a well-chosen cast. Barbara Lucas's party for the cast, the crew, and the director, Miss Kauffman, added a fitting climax to a memorable evening. --ss Miss Anjean Kauffman Latin Club This M. H. S. club was reorganized in November of l953 for the purpose of gaining a more thorough knowledge of Roman life, customs and language, understanding better the practical and cultural value of Latin, and arousing interest in this language. Students currently enrolled in Latin or who have satisfac- torily completed two years of Latin were eligible for member- ship. The motto, Vincit qui laborat, lHe conquers who laborsl and the colors, purple and white, became the symbols ofthe group. Members were distinguished by their black pins on which a gold Roman lamp was imposed. At the March meeting, Latin I students were initiated into the club. The year's activities were concluded with a banquet in April. The olticers tor the year were: Gloria Hottle, Presidentp Sharon Donahue, Vice-Presidentg Barbara Stupp, Secretaryg David Stalder, Treasurer. Homecoming Homecoming in November found Verla Raney and football co-captain Jim Dickey reigning as Queen and King of these traditional activities at M.H.S. The court was composed of Sandra Martz and football co-captain Don Pennington, Senior Attendants, Marianne Leis and Dan Shell, Junior Attendants, Carolyn Null and Charlie Thompson, Sophomore Attendants, Janet Allen and Jerry Fogle, Freshman Attendants, Marjorie Good and Rick Stock, Eighth Grade Attendants. Peggy Spencer and Vicky Jo Sorrel were selected as pages for the Royal Court at Harmon Field. The group was presented with appropriate ceremonies both at the half time of the Piqua game, and at the dance in the Memorial Cafe- teria after the game. Senior Class President, Bert Wall, acted as Sandra Martz's escort at the dance, instead of Don Pennington, who was iniured during the football game. As the sponsoring group again this year, Y-Teens was largely responsible for the success of the activities and ceremonies surrounding Homecoming. The Queen and her attendants were also honored in the parade at the Lions' Club Fall Festival. This event was one more exciting ex- perience added to an already memorable oc- casion. ...60..
